The guy who said “we are tax payers! We pay HOA fees! There should be money for us.” You said it dude. You pay HOA fees. Your HOA should have money for disasters like this. If they don’t then you may want to check up on your HOA Board. Not the tax payers fault. You signed up for the HOA.

Two issues here - 1) Hotels on the beach that support one of the major economies for Pinellas, which helps you pay less tax. 2) Condos everywhere in the county who aren't eligible for FEMA assistance, because they are being categorized as commercial enterprises like the hotels. Just because they used homes on the beach as an example, doesn't mean that the rules stopped there. And while you're grousing about the rich, did you get the part where the people whose damage exceeds 50% aren't going to be allowed to rebuild without meeting code? Your richy rich buddies is Tally have made sure that insurance won't pay for that, so just who do you think will benefit in the end? The rich folk who'll move in for the kill in a land grab like was attempted in New Orleans after Katrina

If condo buildings are commercial then presumably the condo owners were not paying for FEMA insurance (unless their building had a commercial property policy), so why would they expect FEMA to pay? I lived in a floodplain in the midwest and FEMA insurance was very expensive so unless the bank had a mortgage and required it, most people didn't pay to have it. We had a big flood and it turned out the towns and cities in Nebraska condemned any property that had 50% damage, irregardless of the owner's insurance situation, maybe that is just standard practice.

The various rumors going around about FEMA are mostly false, but situations like this is why so many are skeptical. FEMA doesn't seem to be looking out for the average person seeking help. Rather they come across as unhelpful and preventing rebuilding. Which then makes some wonder if there are other forces at work, such as developers seeking highly sought locations for cheap.

To the residents who said Florida considers it a residential well guess what? FEMA is not Florida only. It's Federal. Also, the vast majority of the United States does not want to pay for it through our taxes. You have an HOA due you can pay for it. Your private insurance can pay for it.
