What happened in Rapid was unfortunate, i was hoping to see him fight until the end no matter the results. But i'm happy to see him return so quickly. Gonna be honest, it looked much better on camera letting the players wear what they wanted for Blitz e.g. Levin and Hikaru in their customary colourful shirts
@Abhi-rd4me3 күн бұрын
Magnus' way of going about things in this jeans gate was questionnable but I'd be thankful as a professional chess player if the rule that served no functional purpose was chucked out from all professional chess tournaments. I personally would almost always wear a pair of denims or regular fit cargos to matches because I simply find them more comfortable. I mean, if Nakamura and Aronian can wear flashy colourful shirts that make me feel like I'm tripping, then what's the rationale behind banning jeans? (Not to mention that it's the torso that's mostly visible to the opponent and not the lower body) And things like torn clothing or clothing displaying vulgarity, suggestive graphics, quotes and propaganda will continue to remain banned, let's not extrapolate it too far and sound unreasonable. So, no, it isn't a pandora's box. Magnus sure has a tall ego for sure and there are more humble and graceful players than him but that doesn't take away the fact that he has proven to be the best overall among all the formats in the current times. One can be objective enough to appreciate one thing from the other. And I believe that players like Magnus who're at the top of the professional chess pyramid and have good global following must raise voices that seek to improve the game without robbing it of its core spirit, albeit in a non power-tripping manner. The problem with "humble" players is that they would never seek to bring reforms to the games due to their high agreeableness because it'd fundamentally require defying the existing authority in some manner. So, this whole thing is a double edged sword. It's very rare to find someone with the right balance of these two things.
@radscorpion83 күн бұрын
All it would require is a formal complaint on the part of one or more players. Then they would review the rules and change it. It is not that difficult and many other players in other sports have done this without resorting to the antics displayed here. I can appreciate Magnus' playing ability, and in general his good manners in most matches. But what is stunning to me is that he can't simply change pants to conform with a dress code. Has he never been to a suit and tie event? Does he refuse to wear a suit there too? How hard is it to switch into another pair of pants and raise your complaint at the same time? These are levels of egotism and childishness that I formerly only associated with Hikaru, who is another egomaniac, except he is much more mean-spirited and viciously assaults people that he loses to. What is incredible is the density of egomaniacs in chess (Hans Niemann being another example of a horrible human being). Whereas in tennis for example, you have the shining stars - Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, who are incredibly graceful and humble and try to follow the rules, even though they may complain about it afterward.
