In this episode of "It Followed Me Home" I cover a couple axes I picked up while at the Madison-Bouckville June 2024 antique festival as well as a couple axes I purchased off of eBay. I also show a repaired Colton clamp on vice I purchased at the show.

Awesome finds. I recently found a smaller plumb rockaway too. You really cant have too many plumb connies... agreed. Cool videos.

Thank you Sir!!! And I was trying to hide my excitement to the seller when I picked up that rockaway. I'm very curious to weight the head as it definitely feels smaller than my other plumb! I think it will cleanup great though! I'm curious does yours have any touch marks on the opposite side of the stamp?

Thanks Darren! I can't pass up a good Connecticut! That rockaway was a very fun find for me though as they are considerably more rare! I will definitely make videos of cleaning them all up eventually.

Very cool finds. I believe the 2" is a Colton and you should be able to clean it up nicely. The 36" handle really will pair nicely with a fire axe. Great finds all around.

Thanks man! I'm excited to clean it up. I think the brazing will look cool with a hot oil finish. I almost bought a second one identical to this but with a intact dynamic jaw but a badly chipped anvil face. I walked though because the guy had it marked 8 bucks and when I picked it up he said 15 and then wouldn't budge. Rubbed me the wrong way but now I'm regretting not grabbing it. I could have used it as a donor for this one. Maybe if he's got a booth in August again I'll grab it. Very happy with the finds overall though.

I don't pick up a lot of axes.. just a few here and there. I'm not a real big axe guy. But it is fun to see what people find at the market Do you go just to hunt axes? Just curious I think it's the hunt and not knowing what you'll find that makes it enjoyable. The vise is nice.

The main thing I collect is axes but anything that's old or interesting to me is on the table haha. It's mostly hand tools, hammers, socket chisels, saws, tape measures.... I really should research cast iron pans more. I don't have any but am always coming across them.

That is the same plumb conn I had told You I found at a garage sale! (The one not hung). What an awesome axe! Nice splitter actually! How come I found the two full size plumbs I have 4 lb Dayton and that 3.2 Connie, are just UN-file sharpenable! I can ONLY sharpen them with my diamond stuff?!? Did plumb make harder bits than any other maker? My collins and TT/Kelly file sharpen like a boss

I've got a 3² plumb Dayton (the one I hung in my handle shaping series) that has a really phenomenal temper. When it comes to hand filing older axes the oxide layers "patina" can be exceedingly hard! On a number of old heads once I'm through that later it's a bit more manageable. It's hard to pass up a Connie. Especially out in the wild! But the rockaway was Definitely coming home with me!!

@@Nsvens89 now, is the Rockaway named after the rockaways in NY (downstate) near me? Kind of how the Hudson Bay is the NE, Michigan is from the mid-NW, etc…don’t have one, still need a full size national and rockaway to add to the collection! Have you seen the Woodland Pro fallers axe? I see it online when I’m searching for miners axes or 28” straight handles. It’s a partial red paint modern straight up rafting pattern! Curious if you have seen those before?

Mike, I believe that to be true. I'm not sure of it was NY or NJ because I've seen it referred to as a variation of a jersey pattern but it's origen is definitely in that area. I did a little searching on that axe and it appears to be made by council tool? I've only purchased boys axes from them but am a big fan. At some point I'd love to get my hands on one of their 6lb splitting axes. They look incredibly useful in a wood pile.

That Plumb rockaway has the same faded red I found on a old plumb cruiser i recently found. In mine the handle had been removed and just half heartedly placed a dry wood wedge. No sign of permabond. But you could tell the axe and handle been together along time. Do you think thats the original handle? Any sign of permabond? I know permabond wasnt used on the older one but curious. Thanks again for sharing your always great vids bro!

I appreciate the kind words!!!! I haven't really gotten a chance to check it super super close. The red makes me suspect it's an original handle and it's wedged also. No permabond. The hang isn't great as it looks like it was rehung at some point on the same handle. I plan in pulling it apart when I clean it up. I'm definitely curious to see if I find any traces of permabond in the eye. I don't think I've ever seen a permabond rockaway though. It could be that they stopped making them prior to using permabond. I'm definitely curious on the time line of each now.

So I have 3 plumb rockaways. One is 3 lb, one 3.5lb, and a 4 lb. All three have the old plumb logo with the sharp corners on the rectangle. The 4lb has a small round touch mark opposite side of the logo and the 3 lb has a small square/diamond shaped one opposite side of logo. There are no weight stamps on any. Come to think of it none of my plumbs with old stamps have a weight marking.

No worries! I got the notification all the same haha. And very interesting! My larger one has a triangle shaped touch mark on the reverse side and the older square corner stamping. I also don't recall seeing any weight stamps with the square corner plumb! That's an excellent observation. I wouldn't be surprised if this one is 3lb. It feels light for sure.
