I experienced an MH event in 2000 during a Laproscopy. I couldn't breathe despite being intubated. I threw up all over myself because I couldn't breathe. I cracked almost all my side teeth and was put in a coma. I remember not being able to breathe or move. I suspected I was dying and mistook my leg muscle contractions as me trying desperately to move my toes to signal I was still alive but completely unconscious. It was a horrific event that I never anticipated. No one in either side of my family has it. Some have been tested. It's important for OR staff to talk to the patient in these events as I could still hear one soothing voice (female) talking to me. Telling me I would be ok. I heard hope in her voice amongst the otherwise scary excitement around me. I woke up 2 days later in ICU to a nurse doing Reiki on me. Thank you for this informative video.

My mother nearly died from this in the 60's. She was diagnosed with this at The Royal Melbourne hospital in Melbourne Australia. I was tested by muscle biopsy and tested positive and both my daughters also have it.

It is a very serious concern. Definitely let your anesthesiologist know about that medical history if you’re ever in need of surgery. All the best to you!

You've made a ton of videos on anesthesia but also their risks, like this one! Have you made a video before on complications with induction of anesthesia because of a person's psychological state? Some people are easily traumatized, and find that when anesthesia is induced too quickly it shunts their consciousness too quickly. Are you taught to deal with these things? Are you allowed to? And if you have personal experience you are allowed to share, what was it? I'm trying to make a plan with my psychologist because my last surgery's anesthesia induction went very wrong. I'm left with some really devastating trauma. I'd like to avoid this with the next surgery I have planned, so it doesn't traumatize me again.

Yes you should be very vocal about your experience to avoid it in the future, perhaps more Pre-op sedation is required.

How do you approach patients who do not know their familial medical history (adoptees)? Would you plan for the worse but hope for the best as you are prepping the OR?

Yes that makes it challenging to gauge the risk...and that’s exactly what I do, every single time I turn on the Anesthesia gas or give succinylcholine to someone having anesthesia for the first time. 🙏🏾
