Please continue to create these raw, documentary style videos. No other sailing content creators are doing this and it is so refreshing. I appreciate the vulnerable moments. I know it can be hard to share that but please know it feels real and relatable. We are currently downsizing and plan on moving to our Hunter430 next month. You two were our main inspiration. Thank you!!

Jade don't sell yourself short. You don't run out of bravery because you never give up. I well and truly believe if push came to shove you would do what you need to do when you needed to do it (Maybe a big ball of emotional mush as you are doing it but it wouldn't stop you from getting it done) then break down after when it doesn't matter. Great content!! Thanks for having us along!

Your bimini folds up for a 40 knot reason! ;) You need to check your fuel filters after a lot of slamming because crud gets stirred up. Glad you put a bit of sail out to make progress. What a great introduction to you guys. This is the first episode I've watched of yours and it is amazing! As others have said, this episode deserves an award. You guys are so open and real it is a real pleasure watching. You earned my subscription in the first 2 minutes, and the rest of the video just confirmed i was a good move. Being in the middle of an electrical storm at sea is much scarier (at least to me and my wife) than big waves and high winds. Those you can deal with if you trust your boat and know what you are doing. Electrical, nothing you can do at all. I would strongly advise doing what you can to give the lightning an easy path through your boat so that if you do get stuck you have a better chance of escaping with minimal damage. There are plenty of KZbin channels that have episodes about all the damage a lightning strike did to their boat. I can't wait to being your channel.

What a great video. I’ve been watching since way back during the rebuild and this has got to be the best pure sailing video. When the adrenaline is running overtime, the fear factor is up a bit, but the exhilaration factor is higher, that’s makes for a great sail. It sucks when a little sea sickness jumps in but Scopolamine is your friend if you need it. The best sailing is bikinis, sun, beaches … and a good dose of this kind of sailing. I could feel the salt spray in my face, the tingle of apprehension and the joy of sailing. Awesome.

I spent several years at sea in the Navy and I went through a bunch of rough weather and some down right awful storms. I also sailed for several years in the midwest where the weather can hit you so quickly you don't see it. One thing I learned, and it's OK to be like this: Moderate your fears but don't lose them completely and learn everything you can from those you endure. Conditions differ, equipment can fail partially or fully and there are some blows you just need to stay the heck out of it. Some storms you can gauge and others build with intensity. And weather reports always change. Travel safely, don't be afraid or embarrassed to run from those things and always make sure that your equipment is 10/10 before you go extended.

I always wonder why people run the engine in a storm , More power in the sails and you have infinite reefing from the cockpit . Put a sliver out and run before it if need be ( not dead down ) , your speed will reduce the apparent wind and the sails stabilize the boat . The engine does not like that shit , the fuel gets stirred up things get sucked in and you can even suffer oil starvation .

I completely agree, sailing boats are made to use sail when there is wind and guess what when wind is in also waves are in... enigne is whem no wind or when in port. Also when there is no wind and you are in the middle of the ocean is better to wait and save gasoline than run out of gas...

@@luigicrispo6853 , completely agree….found that out the hard way when during a rough sail our engine died at a most precarious moment (of course), diesel fuel filters completely fauled from that crud. These things always get you in rough weather when it’s difficult or even worse to deal with it.

I don't get it? What brought you to the point of just roll up the sails turn on the engine and bash into it? What about a more seaman like approach of heaving- to, get the situation staightened out and carry on under reduced sail. We have even enjoyed a sit-down dinner at the salon table when heaved-to in a full gale. Also, heaving-to is not just for gales. The effort and expense we put in to making our boats heave-to well will be repaid in many other ways, including being able to take a pleasant rest from arduous conditions and being able to comfortably wait for daylight or better conditions before attempting a tricky landfall. It can also be an invaluable technique in the event that we must make a repair at sea. Of course all this is moot when the tenderfoot mistake of sailing under jib alone, which is all to commonly used.

@bojangles8837
@bojangles8837 Жыл бұрын
@@jackdbur In recent years heaving-to has fallen out of fashion. I think this is because of the misconception that modern fin keel boats won’t heave-to well. In most cases the actual problem is the limited ability that modern sloops have to appropriately adjust their sail area to lie heaved-to comfortably, rather than a hull form issue. With that said you are correct that use the backed staysail when heaved-to, which brings the center of effort much further aft than would be a better case than if we used the jib. I think that in there case a tightly reefed jib out on the bow, a long way from the keel and the center of lateral resistance, makes it more difficult to heave-to well. Even if a voyaging boat is rigged as a sloop, I think she should have the ability to know how to heave-to quickly.

But both of you seem to have great qualities and very supportive of each other. Sometimes it works to shed a tear or two. I find when I get overwhelmed and it doesn't matter where I am, like driving the tractor around my property I will drop some tears out. It used to bother me but after just of few minutes the tears have rekindle my soul and I can get back to being happy and enjoying my lovely family and most important loving my wife. Wish you the best and will continue watching. I don't tend to comment thou. I hope this makes sense. Thanx Jeff

Yes, a sweep every morning. The first anchorage you came to is safe to go in closer to the shore. Howler monkeys will serenade you mornings and evenings. Fair winds

You know there is something about the sounds of the water rushing by that is so soothing. My wife and I used to go sailing all the time in our sailboat. There was something about getting the sails tuned to catch the wind and hall ass as fast as we could get that boat to go. Healed over to where water is lapping at gunnel.

Great video. Your best yet. One thing I especially liked was that you did not overlay music all through. It was enough to hear you and the elements. And Jade, don't be shy of wearing your glasses. You look fabulous with or without your specs. Hopefully your next sail will be less stressful.

You guys are really amazing and what I love a lot about your channel is that y’all make all your videos nice and long instead of 5 minutes. It really gives us a good peak into real sailing! Keep up the awesome job 🙏

Great sailing you two. The dogs are a huge blessing. Loved the confidence the dogs had in y’all during those 40 mph wind storms.

Love the potato scene at 45:46. Reminded me of the symbolisms used in older European movies. Three potatoes rolling on the floor during a rough sailing trip, but what does it mean …. Lol. Excellent video. Congrats on your longest trip to date.

Very exciting episode! The storm brings us a greater sense of the awesomeness of nature and how small we are in comparison. You guys were great. Love your dogs! Having been a boater for more than 50 years, I have a healthy respect for the sea and appreciate how you were feeling during the storm. It is exatillerating and frightening at the same time. The experience will make you better sailors. The lightning is the scarie concern at sea because because it can ruin your electronics! Hope you are able to make all the repairs while in port.

The jigsaw puzzle staying in place on the table downstairs thru several huge storms has more inner strength than i do. Ur videos as a whole have been getting me thru some shit this week & i rly appreciate finding this channel. I love boats but am terrified of the sea & this makes me feel like part of boat life, similar to reading sailors’ logs from back in the day but kind of in real time. Thank you guys for doing this!

What a great episode. Thanks for not cutting it any shorter. Keep up the great work. Quick question, the leeward shrouds seem slack. Have you tuned and checked the rig since the passage?

Hey Jade, I never felt good about being in an electrical storm when sailing on the Great Lakes in New York or Canada . At that time I sailed and lived on my new Challenger, 35, Ketch from April 1st till November 1st every year until 1995.. I loved my sailboat and had complete trust in her ability to bring us, my wife and 2 boys, then 7 & 11 years old, back alive. But out on the lake when it was showering us with lightning, that was an entirely different ballgame. We were amazingly lucky. In 20 years, we never took a direct hit on the boat.

Really nice and interesting! -- QUESTION -- I don't understand.. We keep being told that old heavy sailboats, Alberg 37, Tayana Vancouver 42, Valiant etc., are the way to go as they weather storms better and have better safer motion. But from my eye, this sailboat seemed to handle that storm extremely well. Can you let us know if this handled better than those older heavy sailboats? How would it compare to an Oyster 485 or something like that??

Excellent episode! Couldn't stop watching. I lived in Honduras for awhile...Neighbor Guatemala wasn't a very safe place back then, stay close to your friends and take their advice seriously about theft. Also- Hope you guys have all your shots and are taking medical precautions. Malaria and Dengue fever are no fun. And finally- Jade your commercials are so professional. Love the way you hit all the talking points, brevity, shaking the bottle and slamming it down label out! You're really a pro.... SOLD, I'm gonna try that stuff!
