The new series We Were the Lucky Ones takes a powerful, heart-wrenching, and emotional dive into one family’s journey to survive and reunite during World War II and the Holocaust. The historical TV series is based on a book of the same name by Georgia Hunter. The series will premiere on Hulu on March 28. Young Entertainment got to sit down and chat with many of the people who helped put the show together, including executive producers Erica Lipez and Thomas Kail, author and creator Georgia Hunter, and actors Robin Weigert, Hadas Yaron, and Michael Aloni. We talked with them about the importance of this Holocaust story, learning new points of history, and how you should seek legitimate sources on social media.
Each of the creatives we interviewed said they learned many new things about the Holocaust while filming and working on the project. If you want to hear more about the powerful show and the inspiration behind it, be sure to check out the video below!

It is great that you were able to use so many famous and excellent Israeli actors in this English language series.

I was very impressed with Hadas Yaron’s scene with the einsatzgruppen. She was enable to express great emotion beyond the need for words.

It was funny to see Lior Ashkenazi as the patriarch of the family. I realize both he and I have gotten older. I was happy to hear him use Ashkenazi pronunciation, so much more realistic. It is always jarring when characters in Holocaust movies, supposedly in Eastern Europe, speak Hebrew as if they were modern day Israelis.

Did the Holocaust affect Addy's relationship with Judaism? In the show, the Passover Seder is important to Addy so it does not seem that they were completely secular Jews. How did Addy give up his Judaism?

There is KZbin channel called Storytellers Studio that she gave an interview for before the show ever came out. She was asked that question and she said that her grandfather Addy meet her grandmother whose religion was Presbyterian. She said that her grandfather decided to leave his Jewish ties back in the war and decided not to raise his children Jewish. She didn’t know about his history until after he had passed away till she had a school assignment to interview a family member. His siblings still practiced the religion after the war but he never did and never talked about his past.

Addy Kurc and Eliska seemed like such an attractive couple in love with each other. It is sad they did not marry. What happened in real life?

Why didn't Georgia Hunter know she had Jewish ancestry? Did her grandfather Addy marry a Christian? Did Addy convert to Christianity? How many of the family and their descendants are Jews today? Would Georgia Hunter like to become Jewish? How did learning of the family's story affect her feeling toward Judaism?

To say that Addy was too busy to talk about being Jewish doesn't make sense. It seems he was running away from it. Perhaps reacting to the Holocaust. Perhaps out of shame. How did Addy's parents accept Addy's marriage to a Christian and leaving behind his Jewish identity?
