Getting updates doesn't imply it wasn't finished when you bought it. Sure, some of the updates are bugfixes, which in an ideal world shouldn't be necessary, but for our Teslas a lot is new features, or in the case of our old Model S - a major user interface redesign less than a year after we bought it 2nd hand. As they've gathered more statistics on battery charging and degradation they've changed the curves to apply the new knowledge. The only instance I can think of where I can sort of accept the "not finished" argument is in case of the Model Y, which was built with matrix headlights for, I think, close to two years before they finally had the software ready to activate them just under a year ago. They were never advertised as having matrix headlights befre that though, so for owners it felt like suddenly getting a major headlight upgrade for free.

A lot of the software requires timely updates to get rid of vulnerabilities. VAG uses quite a few open source software components that are a handful of years old already. And the ID cars still dont have a trip history in the app (because of missing trip logging from the car) and several other things that older Golfs and Passats had. While a finished product out of the gate was the norm a decade ago - cars today rely a lot more on technology that requires a regular update schedule.

VW should really improve the software on ID models, regardless of the Rivian partnership which will bring results in 2028. Just copy everything from Tesla. Also is ID.2 going to have yet another software stack? They currently have - 1st gen ID cars -which arrived up to 3.0- - 2nd gen ID cars (5.0) - PPE Android based software stack - J1 software stack - MEB small android based software stack - SSP software stack with Rivian partnership This is just crazy. Any company would have issues with this level of fragmentation.

Coming to the end of my 4 year lease of an id.4 1st ed (uk), its software only tried to kill me 4 times this week! This was from the unacknowledged (but very repeatable) bug where if you approach a give-way junction or roundabout (not a complete stop) and are in a slow crawl when you put your foot down to jump into a gap opportunity, it bogs down leaving you becalmed in the path of oncoming vehicles (sometimes at high speeds). My next car will not be a VW group car. On an id.4 forum several owners have reported this to VW or their dealer but it isn't believed/acknowledged as a problem.

I got my ID5 in June 2023 with software 5.0. Since then I got 3-4 update related to ADAS and Powertrain (VW statement). Probably trimming/calibrations. Then last year I got 5.2 and didn’t see anything new. Disappointed

The new hardware wasn’t released in 2023 so no way your timeline is correct.

i understand the frustration about updates, more so when you see company like tesla, volvo and other chines brand like BYD push OTA more and more frequently. VW cars are better engineered (just check munro live and other highly specialized channel) if you look a the raw hardware, unfortunately VW and all the others european manifacturer still do not realize that to do appealing cars you first have to create a solid software.
@tobiasbraun232810 күн бұрын
I don’t care about OTA. The only thing I care about is getting the pre-heating for the battery. I am on 3.2 with the Cupra Born.
@AnotherAmateurCarChannel10 күн бұрын
with 3.2 you won't get it... new hardware needed for that sadly... I got my Born in 11/2025 with software 5.0 which is running fine, but for example, I am missing the Tidal app in there, and the routing should have better options... all in all, car is great!

They made huge promises when they launched the ID.3. Especially also the battery preheating. I owned one from April 2021, but gave up on VW two weeks ago and switched to a used Model 3. Almost the same age, but I've already received an Update...

My ID7 got updated to 4.1.3 at the dealer and it did not fix the massage stopping after couple minutes. Next they replace the massaging pillows in few weeks to try to fix it. Those got replaced to driver seat already 6 months ago but they will try again by replacing them on both seats.

Got my ID4, in september software 4.1, no updates yet, still every video on youtube from july had software 5.x? So luckily it is a lease car, never a vw again.

@JohnoEx9 күн бұрын
VW have not launched a single EV in Australia yet, it might be too late for them as our market is flooded with new Chinese EVs that start as low as AU$30,000 for the BYD Dolphin.

Tesla updates in 2024: 30 - in 2025, so far: 3. VW whole OTA affair is more than embarrassing: it's unacceptable, IMHO. I'm sure the "rest" of the car is valid, but the update infrastructure is very important nowadays, especially in an EV.
@mikadavies66010 күн бұрын
What is embarrassing.... That Volvo "need" so many updates OR that VW just cannot sort out their dreadful software?
@thomasfrank917410 күн бұрын
It depends. What do those Volvo updates provide? Loads of bugfixes? Promised but at release time missing features? That would be embarrassing. New features/improvements on the other hand I'd consider service and support. Things VAG does have room for improvement.

We all know VW can build fantastic cars and are the kings for automechanics, but they need to put all their money in software development. Maybe they should start doing it themselves - It will be pricey to start up - yes, but they will also be able to control every aspect of the software development!!!
@thomasfrank917410 күн бұрын
Well VW does build their software inhouse: CARIAD. But they failed miserably. SW 4.x and younger is incompatible with 1st gen MEB cars due to massive HW changes. But even with the newer branches 4.x and 5.x they seem to have issues even though they have MEB development alongside software development...
@SimonRGates10 күн бұрын
That was the problem, they switched from external suppliers to in-house, built a 1500 person dev department, and failed completely because they had no experience managing a complex software project.
@cmdrstevemcmaru741710 күн бұрын
@@SimonRGates Hopefully, Rivian can solve the VW software problems, but I suspect that we will not benefit from the Rivian deal with the current ID.s we bougth. I own a 2024 ID.4 pro S AWD and do have some software issues from time to time (especially infotainment system rebooting and automatic wiper to stop working). VW is rolling out software updates for older ID.4 as part of a recall in North America to fix failing driver displays, but I don't get an update on my car. Really sad.

VW are miles behind when it comes to EV’s and software, the ID7 is my first and last VW. The Chinese cars are coming and VW is going to be in trouble.

Skoda Enyaq for four years.... lots of promises, almost all broken. Three updates in four years, all at the dealer. Still no OTA updates of the core software... some worthless updates of optional software. Long story short - lease contract ends in two months, never, ever will I consider Skoda or VAG again. Kia EV9 already ordered. Enyaq is an otherwise nice car, but the software (3.7, "old" Enyaqs won't get new features- glad I didn't buy, as it's already obsolete...) is just crap. Good riddance.
