It is NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to play this RHCP RIFF right

Can't Stop by the legendary rock band, Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'm sure many of you have heard this song and especially love the raunchy riff played by the band's lead guitarist, John Frusciante. There's just something about how he plays the riff that's so special and I have heard multiple covers, but most don't seem to get it exactly right.
I'm certainly no Frusciante, so I can't promise a perfect play, but here is my humble take on this timeless riff.

Give it a try playing d note on open d string, not fifth fret on string a. Fru plays like that and it sounds more "open" and "fresh" in my book. Just my two cents, good job brotha

I did notice that he played an open string there, but it was very hard for me to get that sound the way he does without playing other open strings and muffling the sound of the riff. A little more practice and I'll have it down. Thank you very much!
