The first time I learned this story behind this beautiful hymn, my husband had just lost his job and we lost our home, and possessions were repossessed, and my husband of 25 years was saying he was going to leave the state and leave me and the children behind, my sorrows were rolling like sea billows, and I thought of Horatio praising the Lord after all of his losses, and I praised the Lord, and my sorrows were nailed to the Cross, and I bore them no more, and it became well with my soul, and I felt the presence and peace of the Lord in my soul, and the Lord took care of me and my family. Now, 8 years later, my troubles, like sea billows are rolling once again - I now have cancer, and I immediately have sang and prayed - it is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord O my soul. It IS well with my soul, and the Lord is keeping me safe in the Palm of His Hand, and as far as those troubles like sea billows, let 'em roll, God's got this, and I praise him for his loving kindness and his mercy. Many good things have come from mmy cancer journey, many blessings, many good new friends, and I, yes I have been able 2 pass it on and help and pray 4 others who have been diagnosed after me. God has taught me that each day that my feet hit the floor and open my eyes in the morning, is a GIFT, not something I am owed - it is a true gift from God, a GIFT to be shared, Praise the Lord, O my soul. "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I KILL and I make alive; I WOUND and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand." Deuteronomy 32:39 - Knowing that He causes ALL things(even cancer) to happen for our(Believers) good; just amazes me. Even Satan must go to God for permission, like in the book of Job. It's just amazing how awesome and powerful our God is!

This is one of my most favorite hymns. The version here is one of the best I have heard because it comes across as worship and not performance. It constantly reminds me that my lot in life is not bad at all. It also has significant meaning in my family because it was sung in 1980 at my 13 year old brother's funeral. That was the first time I remember hearing it. This may sound strange but it made that funeral an actual glorious event because he was saved on Monday at Nora Lam meeting and died on Saturday. Our family was comforted, and given that peace that passes all understanding, because we all knew that all was well with his soul.

Oh, how I wish that the hymns of today would be like the old beautiful hymns of yesteryear. Today's hymns are one stanza that is repeated over and over, but when I hear these old hymns they still grip my heart. It is not easy to say " it is well with my soul"; when the beloved one are killed due to natural disaster. No secular poetry can tell such a living faith to any community.
