I was around in 1970, and the 1970 Cutlas Supreme Coupe was one of Oldsmobile's most successful models ever. At least in California it was. They were everywhere. By 1972 it started to lose it's appeal due to the larger bumpers and the grill and tail light design changes that detracted from the look. 1970 was one of the best years for Oldsmobile due to the success of the Cutlas Supreme Coupe. Every year thereafter they went down hill because they lost focus until they became extinct in 2004.

my paraplegic grandfather drove a 70 Toronado. the flat floor made it easy to load the wheel chair behind the driver seat. coming home from a fishing trip on a Saturday afternoon the car did not sound right and after few miles pulled over. my younger brother (12 yrs) saw that the car had no tire on the rear. a good samaritan saw the dilemma and changed the tire. awesome car.

Let's face it . When the Honda Civic came out in the early 1970s it put the American autos to shame , including everything Ford, GM , and Chrysler could produce with being economical and outlasting them by a least twice as long. That's when Japanese vehicles began to overtake the American made vehicles and now Toyota and Honda are the number one and two car companies in the world.

What was not spoke about was the over whelming government power of the EPA & insurance company's restrictions in the early 70s that forced them to cut compression from 11 to 1, to around 8 to1 because hi octain gas was taken off the market and insurance costs to buy a new car were through the roof on any kind of a performance car. Add to that all car companies got away from forged cranks & rods completely that in turn limits rpm to around 6,000 rpm max with a cast iron crank & rods.

My first car when I was in high school was a 1980 Chevy Monza notch back red with red wheel covers and red interior. It was a 3.8 V6 3 speed automatic a/c car. My brother purchased it for 100 bucks in 1990 with with 118,000 miles on it. The car was mint in and out. The guy he brought it from said it is a great vehicle everything works but it needs a transmission. He brought it, took it to a transmission shop and 350 dollars he got a rebuild trans. In 1992 he sold it to me for 100 bucks Great car took it everywhere. Drove it until 1994. Sold for a thousand bucks with 138,000 miles on it. The car looked like it just rolled of the assembly line. Other than the trans the car never was towed and gave us no troubles. 3 months after I sold it to this lovely couple it was stolen and stripped right out of their driveway. In my book the Monza was a great car.

I dont care what people say about old AMC cars. The pacer & the hornet (later to become the eagle 4WD & the concorde) are great! And no wonder. They were powered by the same inline six as the jeep CJ. Durable, reliable, and not difficult to repair I've never driven or owned a gremlin, but gremlin owners love that car as much as my mom loved her pacer Concerning the vega/ monza/ astra, more than one neighbor who had one fitted it with chevy's 2.8L V6. The 2.4L SOHC is one of the worst 4 cylinders ever produced by GM. The V6 was best when coupled with a 4 speed manual transmission. Problem solved. GM seemed to remedy this issue by offering the V6 in the phoenix & the celebrity, which superceeded the vega/ monza The late monza had the worst looking rear end. Influenced by japanese cars of the time, chevy designers wanted larger rear signals that included a yellow turn signal. It was an awful styling decision. They should've left well enough alone with the early monza's camaro-styled rear end

That green AMC Gremlin brought back memories for me. I bought mine used with only 29k miles on the 304 engine. I swapped that engine for the 390 out of my J-10 Jeep P/U. It ran with the “Big Dogs” for another 116k miles, before I turned it into a full fledge drag car in the early 80s, with a tube frame and a Chevy 427 with tunnel ram and Enderle fuel injection “hat”. I’d still be racing it to had I not blown a tire at 160+ mph, totaling it…!

They weren't top sellers at the time but people didn't realize the Prudential and how unique and well-built they actually were. There was a fuel crisis in Japanese cars games traction and it wasn't even because of the fuel crisis. Boy I love that Blue Chevy Monza I had one just like it! Dropped a stroker 400 small block in it, and when you put the pedal to the floor it would wrap your neck around the back of the seat! Welded up the rear axle and made it a true posi, the tires would chirp going around the corner but when you nailed it, you better hold on! Of course rigging up the axle like that didn't last long but it sure was a lot of fun while it lasted! Hahaha

I honestly don’t know where you got the idea about the Monza. It was my very first car and I had a lot of fun driving that thing. I got it brand new in 1980 and got six years out of it. I used to take it on the highway and it seemed pretty peppy to me. When I traded it in, and I told the dealer I got 107K miles out of it, he was reasonably impressed, saying that they were only good for 75,000 miles at the most. But I took good care of it, had the oil changed every 3000 miles and did my maintenance on it

The Chevy Monza was originally designed to have a Wankel rotary engine. At the last minute, GM decided to not use this motor & replaced it with other (less powerful) conventional piston motors. The AMC Pacer was also going to have the same Wankel rotary motor in it.

My dad owned a 1974 monza he bought brand new. It was nothing but problems for entire 5 years he owned it. He could never keep it running right. It kept breaking down. One day i late 1979 the catalytic converter caught fire causing bottom to catch on fire. Luckily fire department saved whole car from catching fire. It still ran but my dad sold it for $400.00. new owner got a steal and drove it 5 more years. He was good enough mechanic to keep junk car running.
