Saying the Pinto was poor handling is laughable. If it was so bad handling why was its front suspension the most popular suspension swap of all time for hot rods?

You mean Mustang 2?
@todddenio3200Ай бұрын
@600miles what do you think the Mustang II platform was? It was a reskinned Pinto. Part numbers are the same for the control arms, spindles, steering rack, and springs.
@WPeterCampbell-w8m8 күн бұрын
I agree. The Pinto platform also saved the mustang ,because the 4 cyl Mustang II was put on the Pinto chassis.

The Vega was great when they made the Cosworth edition. Once torn down and redone, and upgraded to a V8 4-Speed, with a positraction rear end, Vegas were awesome!

@@600milesyes. If you look on the badge it clearly uses Roman numerals II , that's why I used them here.

Pinto also had a V6 with rack and pinion steering. I had two and loved them both.

Saying that the Chevy Monza was labor intensive when it came to maintenance is an understatement, the engine had to be lifted off the motor mounts to change the spark plugs, and remember it is basically a Vega

Only in Vegas 🙂

That was with the V8 equipped cars, which were also kind of nose-heavy and surprisingly slow. Either the 4 or V6 was probably a better deal.

I had a Pinto wagon which was considered much safer. More metal after axel. But weighed more. I had stick which helped.

1:20 There were a total of 27 fuel tank deaths in 2,000,000 Pintos for the whole decade of the 1970s, not the 200-per-year that the lawyers and yellow journalists were claiming, and the famous "Pinto memo" wasn't even written about the Pinto, or any car that was actually made. The car was no more dangerous than its competitors.

@ Yeah in the 80s there was a kid who drove one to my HS. I used to laugh and do a WTH? every time I saw it. I did not think it feasible for a car company to produce something like that. And to top it off, it was 💩 brown! If this guy wasn’t known as a tough guy and good fighter, he would have been bullied mercilessly.

My girlfriend back in the seventies owned a Pinto hatchback. The handling, while not terrific wasn't too bad. To my surprise, the car was great in the winter snows, perfect for upstate New York winters, comparable to my Corvairs. At the time I was a regular ice racing driver and had no issues driving it in harsh conditions. -dave.

1:33 My buddy worked on the Ford assembly line in Milpitas CA. He said it was due to a screw that was excessively long on the gas tank straps that punctured the tank upon impact. You forgot the Honda 600 coupe!

Ford made bank selling Pintos during the seventies energy crisis. They were boring cars much like the Chrysler K cars of the eighties. The market wanted cheap, reliable, no frills 😂😂 transportation.

that was not a Fiat 128 3P coupe you are showing, and certainly not the hatchback, but the predecessor 128 Coupe SL.. That's a mix up of 2 different 128s

@dgwachtelАй бұрын
I owned a '64 MGB roadster and loved it (until it rained mid journey and had to put up the tinker toy top roadside!) but it finally rusted out! I drove it hard and it never was twitchy or unpredictable (wider tires and Koni dampers in the rear). At 6'4" tall the driving position was the best of any car I've ever owned. The handling was ruined when the suspension was raised so as to match bumper height requirements. -dave (20 year club racing driver in formula cars)
