Charles McCullar left his home state of Virginia in 1974 to go on a cross country photography expedition, traveling by bus and stopping at various places along the way to go hiking. He was nineteen years old. In January of 1975, he arrived in Eugene Oregon, where he stayed with a friend for a few weeks and then decided to go out and do some winter photography at Crater Lake National Park. In October of 1976, a pair of hikers found a torn up backpack down in a remote canyon located 12 miles from where Charles had been supposedly camped out. David Paulides covered the case of Charles McCullar.

I've always believed that the remains, in this case, could have been carried a long distance in flood waters when the snow melted. If his remains were frozen then carried by flood water, they could have appeared to have "melted" when warmer weather thawed the remains.

Most reasonable explanation, providing there was a blizzard or heavy snowfall on him when he was in the act of wandering off track. The real mystery is: was it suicide or recklessness?

In this case, he was over at least two mountain ridges. And snowmelt doesn’t flow uphill. He might’ve died at the peak and been washed down, but that only raises more questions about he got so far upslope in seven feet of snow.
