I thought Skarsgårds idea was to portray the fact that Pennywise wasn't just a clown, but a creature posing as one.

i liked it more than Curry's clown, because curry was more like: i should act like a clown, Bill was like: " i'm a ancient creature, i don't know exactly how clowns act but i can try".

I think that was the beauty in Skarsgard though. Anybody who's flung down the rabbit hole of SK's work knows that Pennywise is LITERALLY from out of this world, so the idea that even his portrayal of clown is offputting FOR CLOWNS reaaaaaaaally says something about what he added to the performance. He wasn't a clown, he was a monster, but he was a monster disguised as a clown, and that really showed throughout his performance, and is what made the other transformations so believable.

I literally just saw the movie! And I gotta say Grace, as much as I love Tim Curry' performance as the clown, I like Bill's Pennywise better. Because his is A LOT closer to the character SK wrote. He doesn't talk much, when he does his humor is absolutely terrifying, and he gets frustated a lot. Btw, the best lines is this movie were taken from the book word by word. I'm so freaking happy, this is my favorite SK adaptation ever!

I agree about Mike getting screwed over as a character. His main trait in the novel is that he's the history buff. By taking that away and giving it to Ben, they basically reduced Mike to just "the black kid in the group." That's literally all he was.
@Thewhitequeen0
@Thewhitequeen0 7 жыл бұрын
MeatballsMarlowe I don't know if I necessarily agree with that. I typed a long comment about it already, but I feel like they (the people who made the movie) wanted to give all the kids a balanced amount of screentime, and for all of them to contribute something to the group. Ben, without the research he contributed in the movie, simply wouldn't have had much to do. In exchange, they expanded on Mike's backstory and gave him a character arc that was established from the beginning by his grandfather.
@MeatballsMarlowe
@MeatballsMarlowe 7 жыл бұрын
I feel Ben already had sufficient backstory given his crush on Beverly and being the new kid in town, plus they could have included his passion for architecture (which they completely cut out). I don't feel the arc they invented for Mike really did much for the character and am not even sure if it worked. And if it did work, it still ultimately resulted in him both having the least screentime and feeling like the least developed of the Losers Club.

MeatballsMarlowe yh but mike is one of the main protagonist when there adults, he gets them all back together. I can't wait to see the casting for the adult characters. Georgie didn't feel real to you? whatttt? My heart hurt and i got watery eyed during most of his scenes cause he just represents innocence...and I have younger siblings, so maybe that's why. I don't know. That's the great thing about film/art though, it's so subjective.

I think seeing Georgie being killed wasn't more so about setting up his character, but more so setting up Pennywise. Majorly how brutal and uncaring It is with it's victims. Georgie more so represented the children who were murdered and eaten alive by It more so than innocence in my eyes.

I agree! I loved Georgie! I just wish my younger siblings were as innocent and loving as he and Billy are to each other. TheMoonKingdom What they did to Mike's character was criminal. Especially since he didn't have his even more important role as an adult to offset what his younger character lacked in the miniseries. And there was even more to him in the books, but to be fair I'm only comparing him to the miniseries.

In the book, Ben is always very smart and as the new kid, spends a lot of time in the library. Ben was the brains of the Loser's club in their youth. He grows up to become a reclusive architect. Mike, on the other hand, has to struggle to break the mold of his family history. He is the only one to stay in Derry, and becomes increasingly interested in the town's history. He owns/ runs the library as an adult, and is the one to bring the Losers back together. This adaptation (pending the second chapter) will be more faithful in that regard.

nope when you think that he is the one knowledgeable in Derry history because of his family and teach the other ones ..and he is the person through whom they discover who pennywise is. Ben's love for literature has nothing to do with history and pennywise at all in the SK 's book(it has to do with him being lonely).Ben's strength however is his brain ,his ability to create weapon..he is the one who comes up with and makes the weapon and silver bullet idea that can kill The clown. seemingly Stan is poorly touch on too..

I just saw it tonight..... LOVED IT. Made the mini series look like a parody. Eddie and Ritchie were hilarious! Everything about the mini series that didn't make sense (if you hadn't read the book, which I haven't), this movie explains and fixes. Plus it was actually frightening at some parts. Perfect balance of scary, funny, and heartfelt. Edit: I definitely agree with Grace's description of it as "disturbing" rather than "scary". It didn't really make me jump, but there were SEVERAL times that my jaw just fell to the floor. Like "are they really doing that right now???" kind of moments. This is the way I wish horror movies always were. Endless jump scenes get annoying, but this film burned some seriously messed up images into my mind and I love it. I don't usually purchase scary movies but I'll definitely be buying this one.

@Tan87ful
@Tan87ful 6 жыл бұрын
Abbey Kat oh ok. Georgie's arm getting ripped off was kind of hard to watch and shocking. My mouth was wide open when I saw that. Eddie's broken arm made me cringe too. I started feeling pain in my arm too. Haha. It's true that you see someone in real life or on a movie/tv show get hurt and you start to imagine and feel the pain yourself. I shocked my head at the painting lady eating poor Stanley's face. That was eerie to watch too. A couple of things that made me worry and angry was when Beverly's dad tried to rape her and when Henry cut Ben's stomach. It makes me wonder was Pennywise influencing Henry the entire time to bully and taunt the losers. Cutting someone to bully them is extreme. Those 2 things really bothered me the most for some reason o guess because they are real life issues/harm as opposed to danger from a supernatural entity

Just got home from an early screening, and I LOVED IT! I even won the poster that the theater had on display during a raffle! The Georgie death scene really broke my heart, and I loved the new Pennywise to death. I do agree that the film was mostly disturbing than scary (there was one jumpscare that really did get me). I plan on seeing the movie again. My coworkers and I can't wait for the sequel!

This film is EVERYTHING to me. Save for the unfortunate direction in which they took Henry and the very little time spent on Mike, It was perfect in my eyes. I screamed in fear more times than I ever have watching this film, than any other. I'm pumped for Chapter 2. All it took was the conversation between Georgie and Pennywise for me to completely buy Bill Skarsgard's version of the villain. It was so creepy and unsettling, and Pennywise was freakishly disarming in that scene. Henry's "death"(?) and Mike being used as the token "outsider" black kid are my biggest issues with It. If they don't do something amazing with Mike in Chapter 2, I'm gonna be pissed. I felt like the character was an afterthought. Aside from the cattle gun, he brought nothing to the table and that's bullshit. At least Ben had the love triangle and "new kid" angle going for him; he was even a romantic poet (obviously he was developed more than poor Mike). Did they really have to take away what should've been Mike's contribution??? He was one of two black characters in the entire movie, give him something to do other than provide a weapon for the group. And Henry, while disturbing, I agree with you Grace: having him die was a total waste of what could've been a very useful character in Chapter 2. Ugh, it sucks that they dropped the ball on those two things, but it didn't ruin the movie for me. As long as they make up for it in Chapter 2, I think I can overlook the problems in this one.

Gotbit Feverhit I was really hyped for it but was a little bit underwhelming. I thought the cgi was a bit off and it wasn't that scary as I just couldn't take pennywise seriously. Still a good movie though

CGI has been the consistent complaint about this film (that I've noticed) and I'm just not bothered by it, honestly. We already have to suspend our belief to accept this otherworldly clown, so I don't get how the CGI "takes people out" of the experience. I felt it was used thoughtfully but to each their own. When you have a monster that takes on the forms of people's fears, I think CGI is necessary. Could the effects have looked more seamless? Of course, but I would chalk the reason it isn't up to budget. Without a doubt, it'll be a box office hit. Maybe that'll increase the budget for Chapter 2, allowing them to work the CGI in more effortlessly next time. Admittedly, I won't be terribly upset if they don't and decide to maintain the current look.

In regards to your point about Mike and Ben, while I would say that it is slightly unfortunate that they took the 'research' angle from Mike, in the context of the movie, Ben would've contributed nothing to the story whatsoever without that research. Those jokes involving the New Kids on the Block only came up a couple of times, and it worked with his 'shy new kid ' personality, but other than that, his liking Beverly? Still not enough to warrant his character's existence in the movie. Plus, both he and Mike technically contributed knowledge about the town, but Mike got his from his grandfather, which still works because Ben is going to leave but Mike will still stay, so it all works out. The commentary about heroes of color isn't applicable here because Mike's character was dealing with the exact opposite; his grandfather wanted him to be strong, but he didn't want to be. His contribution to the story dealt with him as a kid growing up and facing the aggression against him due to his race head on, rather than being a sheep for the slaughter.

Mike stayed on in Derry because he was the town librarian and he became the librarian because he liked to read and do research. So now since the research-history kid is Ben, maybe Ben would be the town librarian in Chapter 2.

it doesn't work out at all...Mike is the history buff period...Ben is the smart kid..he comes up with weapon, likes Beverly is heroic and he's the new kid in town..that's enough ... and he too will have a massive part in the second chapter if you read the book...Plus it's just an adaptation nothing prevent Ben from being the one bringing them back together in the future.After all no one was expecting them to switch the the historian angle from mike to Ben. Stan suffer the same treatment although his characters trait and what he is are not being omitted.

The scene with Georgie made me cry.. I didn't expect to cry at this movie but i cried twice.. At the beginning and the end. The scene with Georgie dying was 10 seconds and i cried so fast i think im traumatised by that scene. Something about the way it was portrayed and how he was literally screaming and struggling for his life in pain made me tear up, people thought i was being dramatic but i dunno, i guess i just didn't expect it to be that brutal and scarring (for me at least) but the film was truly amazing it was everything i wanted from an IT adaptation/remake

Mike's supposed to be the smart one, I'm so mad they took that away from him! If they still had Mike as the one with the research, the movie would've been perfect.

Hi Grace! I actually thought it was very scary, but in a more haunting manner. Like the use of subtle dialogue within a lot of Beverly's scenes with her Dad made me shrivel, as I was just so nervous about that relationship. I do also think the use of effects here was also phenomenal like when Patrick is stuck in the sewer, that was excellent. And when they see little Betty Ripsom in the doorframe and she gets dragged off, that one gave me chills. Was very satisfied and would agree there are some very talented children in this, and wanting to be an actor myself like I was kinda inspired to see what they created. So much of Mike's character in the book had to do with the racism of the early 1900's leading up to the 1960's. You can't really make the same points about racism in the 1980's. Sure it still exists, but it's just not the same. Mike was done a great disservice just by changing the time. The Losers club was a sort of insulation for Mike from the racism of the Bowers' family.

Great call on Richie's surprise line in the climax, that was indeed one of the most memorable lines in the film. One issue I had regarding Henry Bowers that you didn't mention is that the movie didn't say at all why Henry was angry at Ben, let alone so angry at him that he'd actively look for/ hunt him and attempt to carve his name in the poor boy's stomach. In the book it was that Ben wouldn't let Henry copy off his paper during finals, in the 1990 TV miniseries it was that Henry got in trouble at school for making fun of Ben and he blamed Ben for it, but the movie doesn't give any kind of motive for his actions.

I 1000% agree that it was incredibly disappointing that the writers took away Mike's one defining purpose in the group and gave it to Ben, when they could've just as easily stuck with Ben's affinity towards building/engineering and had Mike shine as the historian that he was and that he grows up to be - in the books. It was definitely a disappointing cop-out.

Nicole Tramel I thought maybe they could be switching his grown-up job to Ben's architect role. They don't have the dam scene in this so Ben is never set up as having engineering/architect potential? Doesn't help the child-hood version of Mike have more of a role

I liked Bill Skarsgard's version of Pennywise so much better than the mini-series, not so much because of the acting as its adherence to the novel. Pennywise is not a prankster/joker in the novel although he does "play" with the Losers. He's a violent, sadistic, alien child killer and Skarsgard's rather netherworldly natural persona and more nuanced performance is perfect. Otherwise I agree with Grace pretty much across the board. I really liked this adaptation but despite that and loving the book the scene transitions seemed disjointed and I actually got bored with going through each child's individual encounter with IT like a "to-do" list. I see the point of not lingering on the violence but the scares just needed longer to "gestate" between them.
@INDStud
@INDStud 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you about Skarsgard's version being a much more accurate version of Pennywise. I did feel like the scenes felt a bit awkward in how they transitioned. I know that they cut out a lot, but I would've loved to see a fleshing out of characters like Patrick Hockstetter(spelling?) and Eddie Corcoran, as their POVs and eventual deaths were some of the scariest ones outside of the Main Group encounters with It. It was also weird how they just....kind of... threw Henry Bowers away.

Since in the film adaptation Henry's fate is unknown, other than falling down the well. I think it would be wicked cool if Pennywise uses the living but physically broken Henry as a way to heal and recover himself back to full strength by feeding on Henry's fear in 27 years worth of torture.

I thought the pacing was a little all over the place. The scenes where each kid had their solo interactions with Pennywise seemed to come and go directly into the next without anything really connecting them. It felt rushed in a way. Something else I noticed, and maybe it's just me, is that I felt more tension and fear under the threat of Beverly's dad coming home while all the loser's were in the apartment with her than I did in any scene with Pennywise. A detail I did enjoy was that after Henry's dad shoots at his feet and you see him walking to the mailbox, you can see he wet his pants, thought that was pretty funny lol Oh and one last thing, the scene where Pennywise's box opens and he is dancing while looking pissed looked really silly/dumb, i don't know if it was supposed to be unnerving or scary but it was actually kinda funny instead

Denis AGREE COMPLETELY!! Their individual interactions with It were so fucking short it pissed me off. Each one was like what? 2 minutes each? Longest one being Beverlys which was maybe 5-6 min. Such a waste! It is supposed to torment these kids and hurt them. When they were alone with Pennywise it never felt like they were in any danger. Al Marsh though? Yeah, there was a ton of suspense and tension there. That's what they should've done with Pennywise and their fears.

Not sure if many noticed but whenever any of the creatures backed away or went back into the shadows they were moving backwards as if they were hand puppets. The scene with Pennywise in the basement showed this the best when Bill ran away, as soon as Bill was gone Pennywise just flopped onto the stairs and was pulled back into the shadows. This gave the concept of him being just a puppet to entice, worked so well.
