The planting appears to be a fairly common ex-racehorse problem, I've had my boy off the track for 3 years, and I spent the first year sitting with him on hacks where he has just decided to plant and would not move at all, and subsequently after however long of being frozen still, would then spin and go up. It can be so disheartening, but all I can say is it did get better with him, and now (touch wood) we barely ever (if ever) have this problem anymore! It's almost like they just have a temporary brain overload, and you just have to sit with them quietly and work through it!

He's definitely starting to understand his new job better and is looking great Lucy, credit to you ! 👍💙 On the negatives this 'stopping' when ever he wants on the course and having to get led to go again needs sorting. It may get to point where he refuses to leave the start box! Maybe he needs an Equine behaviourist to get to the bottom of why he does that so it can be solved rather than a trainer. When he does it have you tried immediately reining back, make him walk backwards or disengage his hind quarters then ask him to go foreward? Sometimes either of these simple methods work and the horse stops doing it as they gain nothing! 💙

What a huge improvement in Ember! The warm ups for the dressage and show jumping was so relaxed, and he was letting the jump come to him. Perhaps when he gains confidence, by repetition, and understands more what is recquired, the cross country will also improve. So well ridden Lucy. 👏🏻

A little advice that helped me with my horse who carried her head like Ember does: I loosened the throat latch so it could only just not pass her cheekbones and that way she’s got more breathing room under there, doesn’t feel constructed when her head is down. You may already have it loose enough, but in one shot it looked quite tight so I just thought I would mention it.❤ Also: I swear every time I hear a car alarm in a video it’s a Jeep, and it makes me think it’s my Jeep

He has completely changed in his body shape! So much more the event horse now. Good on you for the improvements. I like the jump judge lead when he gets overwhelmed. The atmosphere at an event is definitely different than the track. You are so good to stay calm and persevere!! And so fun to go eventing with a great group of friends. Thanks for sharing!!

His head flew up as soon as you asked. So 6.5 is fair and indicates you are riding at the correct level for his ability. I highly recommend scribing if you ever have the option. You learn so much

Ember reminds me so much of my horse, whom I had to retire last year (💔). They share many qualities; hotness, a little nap from time to time and being totally wired under saddle, but passing right out in the lorry. Anyway, I think you are doing a super job and I also think you are completely on the right track. This might be a bit of a development season, but you're riding beautifully, you have a fab trainer and even though he gets very excited, Ember seems to really enjoy eventing. I think it's all going to fall into place and you two are going to be a fierce and successful team and you are going to have so much fun! If I had any advice, it would be to just enjoy the process. He's super and you are a great fit.

I had a hot headed chesnut tb x Arab. No-one wanted him because he was so naughty. I took him on when he was 15, had a couple of difficult years but he ended up the best horse I ever had. He died at 30, missed so much. Well ridden Lucy, you may have a treasure there one day.

Great vlog Lucy and well done to you and Ember! Definitely a big improvement since last time. He's just one of those boys who is going to take time to get to where you want him to be hun. He warmed up lovely and was definitely listening to you, he just likes to listen to himself from time to time, typical male I'd say! 🤣 Looking forward to your next vlog Lucy to follow on with Ember's journey! Take care hun 🥰

I have a 13 yo OTTB. He also does the stop thing. I am not an eventer and am just doing basic dressage but he will take a few steps, stop …then with much prodding he will go around once or twice then stop again. Lots of stopping ! Anyway makes me feel better to see that top riders deal with this sort of thing too !

You do very well to cope with his tension, however, his behavior and tension could very well mean he has ulcers, could be of benefit to you to look further into it. Just as a sidenote, we do a fair bit of TB retraining ourselves, and treating for ulcers is the first thing we do with them when they have left the racing environment and 9 out of 10 horses have a complete turn around in tension and behavior once treated.

@Brisingrize
@Brisingrize Жыл бұрын
Well, if we look at science, its probably, “I can’t see anything!” because horses are infact pratically blind going into a jump, they are far sighted, a horse sees a fuzzy black and white shape, and if the human can’t encourage them over or give them the right moment to jump. Horse’s have self preservation, especially being prey animals. They cannot risk jumping over something, catching their leg and flipping, that’s how they get eaten.

The canter trans - first up your reins are too long - when they are long the tendency is to pull back to control the head where the horse should be sitting and coming from behind and over the back - this takes time and strength - so the trans was a little on the forehand and he ran into it instead of jumping into it - however good job and yes you have both improved heaps he is such a lovely horse so relax into it and enjoy

Lucy, You are obviously confident about jumping,however, during your test you can see that you sort of subconsciously close your hips and bring your chest forward and down. It's totally natural and normal but watch this video back again and compare where your chest is when you jump and in your dressage test. I think, if you take a deep breath open those hips up and roll those shoulders back you will find that you do not need to go to the hands for breaks as much. Also, is the fussing and biting while being tacked up new behavior? I think Ember is trying to tell you something. He looks amazing Lucy, you should do a before and where we are now video with him
