I have an idea... Place a large container deeper than the pumpkin with plastic wrap over the top and place the pumpkin on it and fill the underneath with water so the pumpkin is supported by the water and it will grow into a more correct round shape without the flat spot where it's laying on the ground and it will not contact the water itself.
