Apabahukam, also known as Frozen Shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness, pain, and restricted movement in the shoulder joint. In Ayurveda, Apabahukam is considered a Vata-related disorder that involves the aggravation of Vata dosha, leading to the drying up of synovial fluid, resulting in pain and restricted movement. The condition can arise from various causes, such as injury, overuse, improper posture, or underlying conditions like diabetes.
Ayurvedic Perspective on Apabahukam
In Ayurveda, Apabahukam is associated with the following factors:
Vata Dosha Imbalance: The primary cause of Apabahukam is the vitiation of Vata dosha, which results in stiffness, pain, and restricted movement in the shoulder joint.
Asthi Dhatu (Bone Tissue): Degeneration or wear and tear of bone tissues may also contribute to shoulder pain and stiffness.
Poor Lifestyle Choices: Sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, improper posture, and unhealthy diet can lead to the accumulation of Ama (toxins) and Vata imbalance, contributing to Apabahukam.
Ayurvedic Management of Apabahukam
1. Panchakarma Therapies
Abhyanga (Oil Massage): Regular full-body massage with medicated oils such as Mahanarayan Taila, Dhanwantharam Taila, or Karpasasthyadi Taila helps alleviate Vata imbalance, relieve pain, and improve blood circulation. Warm oil application is especially effective in relaxing muscles and reducing stiffness.
Swedana (Fomentation): After Abhyanga, steam therapy using Dashamoola decoction or herbal steam baths helps to open the channels, reduce stiffness, and improve mobility by enhancing blood flow and sweating out toxins.
Nasya (Nasal Administration of Medicated Oils): Administering medicated nasal drops such as Anu Taila helps in balancing Vata and Kapha doshas, promoting the lubrication of joints, and alleviating pain in the shoulder region.
Patra Pinda Swedana (Leaf Bundle Massage): A therapeutic massage using heated bundles containing medicated leaves like Eranda (castor), Arka, and Nirgundi helps in reducing inflammation and pain.
2. Internal Medications
Dashamoola Kashayam: Useful for reducing Vata aggravation and relieving stiffness and pain.
Erand Pak: A herbal preparation that includes castor oil, which is effective in alleviating Vata-related disorders.
Ashwagandha: Known for its adaptogenic properties, Ashwagandha helps in reducing inflammation and strengthening muscles.
Bala (Sida cordifolia): Strengthens muscles and is used in the treatment of Vata-related disorders.
3. Dietary Recommendations
Warm, Cooked Foods: Consuming freshly prepared, warm, and easily digestible foods helps to pacify Vata dosha.
Include Healthy Fats: Ghee, sesame oil, and olive oil help to lubricate the joints and improve flexibility.
Herbal Teas: Teas made from ginger, cumin, and coriander can help improve digestion and reduce Ama (toxins).
Increase Vata-Pacifying Foods: Include sweet, sour, and salty tastes in the diet. Foods like sweet fruits, dairy products, rice, and wheat are beneficial.
Avoid Vata-Aggravating Foods: Dry, cold, and raw foods, as well as excessive caffeine, should be avoided. Reduce intake of spicy, bitter, and astringent foods that can increase Vata dosha.
