That chat with the SIA guy was one of the most informative clips I've seen. I work in the entertainment industry and run multiple events and I'm now going to expect much higher standards on displaying of the badges. I see so many not doing it and it has lead in several cases security acting unprofessionally. I'd rather pull them up over their badges than deal with some of the incidents I've seen. Fair play to guy for being so honest it's clared a lot of questions I've had up.

The guy didn't fully mention the display, he should have said it's a criminal offence to act as security without a valid SIA license, if caught this way then the fine and potential prison will be followed, there is no criminal offence leading to this with not displaying it, also a member of the SIA or police can demand it, a joe bloggs cannot.

Hi DJ, this expedition to the NEC has been an absolute goldmine for you!, this one in particular shows just how sensible well trained and well informed staff can and do behave in a perfectly agreeable manner and answer all your questions properly. The central issue that occurs to me is that the fundamental problem resides with the company management and the standards of security guard training, to some extent it is wrong that only the staff on duty get the bad publicity, the managers should be held to account. While I am on the case it is my intention to call that Woolpit firm tomorrow, I will look up their phone number and ring them in the morning, if anything of real interest comes through I shall send you a message and if so motivated will also join you on your next audit. Cheers Richard.

@@zigzagtoes Hi zigzagtoes, thank you very much for such a well thought out comment, when I read what you have written I see such a clear picture of the reality you describe, the cascade of unintended consequences that ensue when the higher echelons of management neglect their own responsibilities to such a degree, the underlying concept seems to be that it does not matter what subcontractors do or say as long as ones own life is not disrupted and the minimum of money is being spent. The other side of the coin of course is the poor undertrained and underpaid 'security' staff, the only people that will apply for this type of work will be those who cannot find anything better to do and also subscribe to the concept of 'security' in the first place, to some extent this is a factor that gets overlooked by the rest of us, it is certainly not taken into account during the recruitment and training phase, the fact that they are so willing to throw their weight into it is considered an advantage rather than an issue to be controlled, the fact that they can all more or less rely on the compliance of the general public means that they only effective regulatory mechanism is this style of public auditing and long may it last!. As it happens one of the fundamental mechanisms in the management of the human nervous system is the way in which the 'sympathetic' and the 'parasympathetic' arms of the nervous system work more or less 'against' each other, one speeds up the heart rate the other slows it down, between them they regulate the whole system in a very flexible and effective way, this sort of 'antagonistic' management could be very useful in the wider context of public life. Cheers, Richard.

the only people to whom you are required to show your badge or provide details of your full name when asked are: the Police SIA officers those to whom the SIA has given authority under Section 19 of the Private Security Industry Act (typically, these will be licensing officers from local councils). Although members of the public have the right to request that you show them your licence, you are not obliged to show it to anyone other than those listed above. Certainly NOT required to show it to a fool with a camera who is trying to provoke a reaction. At this point the fool will likely whine “failing to identify” Did anyone ever find out why Martin Blabberer lost his SIA badge????

SIA licensing and rules were brought in to clean up a very dirty industry, often staffed by criminals and run by organised crime. In that regard and introducing standards of training, regulation and conduct it has generally been quite successful. Unfortunately not only do some of these security persons mistakenly not display the badge, as we see on channels like yours, they purposely attempt to cover it up. This makes a mockery of the system and they should be immediately struck off. Lawrence here is excellent.

What does get me though that a hell of a lot of security fail to display them at all and think they do not have to. I have never ever agreed that a camera should zoom in to get the details of an SIA badge nor a coppers warrant card, however when asked to show it upon demand then yes they should. A decent auditor would not publish the details of either and would not even picture or video it. What has to stop is failing to display it, as in PCSOs designation card should be produced on demand.

Mr DJ, Growing up as a kid, my area was policed so bad, we never in our wildest dreams imagined Auditors could exist. The thought of not giving my full name during a stop could result in having something planted on me or they simply would just say I took a swing at them or getting a kicking in the back of the van for not complying. Camera phones changed the way my area (Toxteth) had been policed for 60 years. You have inspired me to start auditing but the fear of police interactions is deeply embedded in my mind. Note that he admits that their priorities are: “assets, property and premises” before people. This is honest reporting. If you look up the legal meanings of assets, property and premises, you will find that humans cannot own assets, property or premises. Only corporate entities can own assets, property and premises. When bailiffs steal our possessions, they are classified as “goods”. The way to protect our possessions and expect the law to recognise our possessions, would seem to be by becoming corporations, or better yet, trusts. Just a thought. Either way, by admitting that the FIRST priorities of security staff are EVERYTHING OTHER THAN HUMAN BEINGS, we learn a great deal about how the real world works. We are classified as slaves, chattel, according to the system. That is not in any doubt. Peace

Found this earlier I used to hold a SIA badge and it was always on show but this was on the .gov site ..... 1. Request Do I need to have my SIA licence displayed with the picture, name and SIA number on show or can I turn it around round and have the back of it showing and only show the ‘sensitive’ information to those authorised to see the licence? If a member of the public requests my full name am I obligated under law or code of conduct to provide the details? 2. Response The information you have requested is exempt under section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, as the data is readily accessible within the public domain. However, for ease of reference I will provide a detailed response for the following information: Do I need to have my SIA licence displayed with the picture, name and SIA number on show or can I turn it around round and have the back of it showing and only show the ‘sensitive’ information to those authorised to see the licence? As I’m sure you are aware, it is a condition of your licensed status that you wear the licence where the front can be seen at all times when engaging in designated licensable activity unless you have reported it lost or stolen, or it is in our possession. The exceptions to this are if you can demonstrate that the nature of that conduct on that occasion requires that you should not be immediately identifiable as someone engaging in such conduct. On such occasions you must carry your licence on you and be able to produce it on request. This allows store detectives or close protection operatives to perform licensable activities without the need to be identifiable. This cannot apply to vehicle immobilisers. If a member of the public requests my full name am I obligated under law or code of conduct to provide the details? In answer to your question of whether you are obligated under law or code of conduct to provide the details of your full name, the only people to whom you are required to show your badge or provide details of your full name when asked are: the Police SIA officers those to whom the SIA has given authority under Section 19 of the Private Security Industry Act (typically, these will be licensing officers from local councils). Although members of the public have the right to request that you show them your licence, you are not obliged to show it to anyone other than those listed above. [Reference: FOI 0241]

So I have one of these great fabulous badges and yes on display/well on/over the uniform unless a store detective or close protection(non uniform) however joe public is unlikely to get to see it closely/info and security guard will most likely say call the police to make a complaint or contact the venue managememt and/or security firm. Internal security for the likes of shops can have internal security and not require an SIA which is a massive bone of contention and from my own point of view if a premises requires a licence of any kind then an SIA person should be used and pushed through licencing requirements. Dont get me wrong the training is very, very basic but it something, however upgraded training and graded levels of security needs to go in line with pay and would most likely retain persons in the industry. The major problem Is the industry has a low retainment rate due to the nature of the job, poor training and progression possibilities and low pay rate.

Great video mate👍👍, your videos literally came in handy this morning when I was taking videos with my Mini 2 at my revisit to Alexandra Palace. My daughter was with me, and a security guard came up to me and said you cannot film here. Firstly, he didn’t have his SIA badge on display, so I asked him to do so, also, he said that it was private grounds, so I said this place is publicly accessible, and there wasn’t any signs saying that I couldn’t video or take photos. He kept on saying it’s private and I would need permission to film. I just said ok, and…? Expecting him to say please can you go from the private ground, but he didn’t, so he just walked off, and I proceeded with my drone shots. Happy days. Thanks for all your videos, they really do help❤️👍👍

just noticed on one of the papers you displayed on SIA actions which may be of less than professional standard., not necessarily working at his site, . this apparently applies even if "off duty!!"

@DJ AUDITS, I think this guy was more than accommodating to your barrage of questions, And came through as a top employee. Too many audits make the working guy's you challenge look like they are the one Who implied such act. Just saying, as you did in this video, don't shoot the messenger 👌👌👌

My ex employer used to have a security firm guard a facility, one of their employees didn't know how to use the toilet, he used to stand on the toilet seat, and squat to take a dump. He had believe it or not, an SIA Card.!!

Ultimately, a Security Officer or Door Supervisor can restrain/detain you if they have good reason. They have no more powers than the average Joe on the street (unless they are CSAS qualified) but as they are working as a professional they have to meet certain standards whilst doing so. Taking someones liberty is a very serious thing to do so everything he said is delivered in the first few days of training for a security license. You'll (almost) never see a Door Supervisor without a badge on display because they are far more likely to be inspected whilst working and more likely to have to detain or retrain someone. All security staff are aware that you can get their first initial and last name + licence number from the badge, that's why they hide it when an interaction goes Pete Tong. The SIA take genuine contraventions very seriously and all guards who are signed up to the email list get a monthly email which gives amongst other info details of recent successful convictions. Most of which are for people working with or providing staff without a valid license. The SIA is a good well meaning Home Office body, the problem always comes with the training and ability of the Officer.

How do you report those that refuse to display , you have nothing to go on.

If they fail to display it then whoever has employed them will want to help. If they don’t then they are assisting an offender.

@@DJAUDITS I guess as you will have video evidence of the identity ( and the failure to identify) they will be forced to cooperate with SIA . All the more reasonable NOT to comply with requests/demands to shut the camera off . I look forward to future Audits where you wield this new 'weapon' and see their reaction , especially when you tell them that the footage of them failing to identify will form part of the report:)

s19 of the Private Security Industry Act 2001 specifies that only a relevant person (licensing officer, SIA inspector or constable) can require a security staff to produce the SIA licence to him.

It's only a criminal offence to a person acting as security without a valid SIA license, not displaying it. Working without a license is a fine of £5000 which can lead to a prosecution/prison time. The guy in the vid should have mentioned this.
