“It’s A Death Tax” | Rachel Reeves Planning On Raising Inheritance Tax

Rachel Reeves is planning to raise inheritance tax as part of a push to collect up to £35 billion in the upcoming Budget. Currently, the tax is set at 40% on estates valued over £325,000 when someone dies.
Reeves is considering changes such as raising the tax rate, lowering the threshold, or adjusting exemptions. For instance, the rule that allows gifts given more than seven years before death to be tax-free might be revised. Other changes could affect tax breaks for businesses and farmland.
These potential reforms are expected to spark controversy. Although only 4% of estates pay inheritance tax, many see it as unfair. Jeremy Hunt, the Shadow Chancellor, has criticised it as "anti-Conservative."
Reeves' Budget on October 30 is expected to include significant tax hikes.
Dr David Bull and political commentator Charlie Rowley discuss.

Why the hell is it deemed ok by many, to pay inheritance tax, never mind increasing it? The UK people are taxed beyond belief as it is. Of course, there will always those green eyed monster types, but I find it hard to understand why anyone thinks it ok to pay yet more tax. Wouldn't be so hard to swallow if the funds the government leach of us was were managed and used wisely, but this never happens. The joy the politicians have on their faces whenever they mention yet more tax grabs is disgusting.

I am not a fan of Trump, but I believe he's the best option for this country. And yes, it will be interesting if Trump wins and how the "special relationship" will most probably suffer with a Republican government in the States and the current bunch of loonies running the UK. Trump appears to be a very unforgiving guy when crossed. But could you imagine what the reaction in the UK would be in American Political Activists came here to try and swing the result of our elections? The world is going mad! Lammy, Starmer, Raynor, Reeves, have NO common sense between them and I'm not yet sure they have a brain cell at all. How is it that Starmer would rise to be a KC as a barrister, Lammy was also a Barrister. I always believed Barristers needed to have a cutting level of intellect.

Why should people not pay full tax on unearned income such as a windfall inheritance? They have not worked for it and in the scheme if things do not deserve it merely by breathing. If inheritance windfalls were properly taxed the income tax burden on the rest of us could be eased somewhat. That IS tax on someone's personal efforts, unlike grabbing money without working for it.

And no, I did not earn "what somebody else" has as I have always turned my back on unearned income throughout my life as a moral imperative. As I say, grab, grab, grab is all that some sad people can think about. Earned income is something else entirely. As you want to be personal (kindly now tell us all about your personal circumstances in turn or you will look like a ridiculous and risible buffoon) I have spent around sixty years earning money, paying tax on it and using the remainder to build my life and that of my late wife. @@timg1246 You do seem to have difficulty with the English language. What I write simply means what it says. Your post was placed in the response zone for mine. As we are talking however, I have never wanted what someone else has. Wherever do you get that idea? It cannot be from my postings and you do not know me so perhaps your clairvoyant needs to be sacked. That said, it is not socialism (what is that anyway?) to say that inheritance bequests, which are utterly unearned income for the recipients, should not be taxed. The debate is over, or should be over, a morally fair level to set that tax. Of course, to use your own standards of logic, all taxation is confiscation. I may well agree with you, but given that for hundreds of years this country has suffered taxation of one sort or another we should look dispassionately and not histrionically (with personal bile thrown in as you seem to project for some reason) at fair levels of tax wherever that may be appropriate. And in this specific instance, taxation of unearned inheritances, that is most certainly apposite. I invite you yet again to disclose your personal circumstances as you seem to demand other peoples' , or at least to make quite ignorant assumptions about strangers' positions.
