The mountain pine beetle here in Canada is destroying much of the trees in Jasper. They're practically indestructible. Fire can't kill them, water can't kill them, and they became really dangerous. Only freezing FREEZING temperaturs for a prolonged period of time can kill them. But because if how cold the winter was this year, a lot of the beetles died off. Nature at its finest ;)

Invasive species are non-native, and they threaten the balance of an ecosystem once introduced. These beetles are part of this ecosystem and healthy trees can defend against them. They aren't going to throw things out of whack on their own. (We do treat them as pests though, clearing out susceptible trees to control their populations.)

I think other pines are affected too. Ips sp. affect Pinyon Pines from which pine nuts are harvested. I have corresponded with harvesters of these here in the USA who report that droughts and outbreaks of Ips sp. reduce the cone crop. Also Lodgepole Pine are affected too I think. Montana Woodworks made me some beautiful furniture that shows the gallery works of these "bark beetles" and the so called "blue stain" that occurs to the wood from the fungus. Deep Look provided us with some really great photography of these guys in action.

One theory to the continuing growth of the beetle populations is that due to the constantly warming global temperatures, the cold frosts that arrive in the pines' regions no longer gets cold enough to kill off some portion of the beetles. Before, the cold would act as a defense for the trees where it would keep the beetle populations in check. Now that winters aren't as cold as they used to be, the beetles can basically keep at eating the pines all year round.
