I've lost three cousins living in West Africa to AIDS in the past 10 years. Even today, their mother refuses to accept the fact that her children were HIV positive. So sad because if they were tested when they were first showing signs of illness they could have received medical support (plentiful and cheap) but instead she took them to pastors who told her what she wanted to hear.

The stigma around it in Africa was what killed many more than the disease ,but it was a Terrible time families left with just the grandparents and the first norms,so many children abandoned, the poverty that continued to drag these families, things are improving but still those days haunt many.

Remember it’s not just a serial. People, young people are still dying of AIDS in Britain,Europe and the USA now! Volunteer because every government has cut spending on AIDS welfare and research. Studies show young men with HIV/AIDS feel more ashamed, isolated, lonely and depressed than young men in the 80’s. In Britain AIDS kills two young men a week that’s 104 a year, can you imagine how many still die in huge countries like the USA

Unfortunately still going on in far too many cultural circles and countries. In many cases, due to outdated interpretations of the Bible from colonial times. Hence an enlightened church I know in London continues to support asylum seekers arriving in the UK having fled countries where the penalty for being LGBT+ is imprisonment or, so often, execution. Also attempts to "pray the gay away" - even here in the UK - is so prevalent, that there are campaigns in a number of countries to outlaw conversion therapy (its legal name).

Sadly some of the AIDS stigma still revolves around religious families. I grew up Catholic with a mother who "respected gay lifestyle, but doesn't support it". Let's just say she thought it was a phase. Although I don't think 7-8 years of bisexuality is a "phase" mother. When she found out I was sexually active with other women, she yelled at me saying not to run back to her when I "catch AIDS". It broke my heart, but I guess that's all I can expect from her. I'm not on drugs, and I protect myself. I also get tested as frequently as I am active, so I believe I'm doing the right thing. I'm also not promiscuous.
