I'm still so grateful I had the opportunity to design the animated props for several areas in the ride. The boat with all the kids is still one of my favorite mechanisms I've made. The new overlay is neat. The antman one gave me a chuckle.

Before I state my opinion, I just want everyone to know that I'm aware it's temporary. With that aside, I just don't think that this overlay works. The characters feel out of place, and they don't blend in with the scenery like the Disney characters do. This overlay does its job as marvel character hunt, but was it really necessary for them to be in "it's a small world!"? If Tokyo was testing the waters with Marvel, then they should've had the characters walking around Tomorrowland instead. Now, I'd like to state some things that I like about the overlay. I appreciate the fact that all of the new characters and props were designed in Mary Blair's art style. Also, seeing the other side of the Taj Mahal full of animatronics was delightful. With that aside, I just want to remind everybody that the "it's a small world!" attractions were built in order to spread the message that we're all the same, no matter where we are from. This overlay just spits in the face of that message. Thank you for reading this.

I'm Japanese and I'm what you would call a "Disney nerd," but I never thought that people across the world would be so negative about this event... In Japan, MARVEL has been forgotten even about its existence, but it's still in my memory. The only one is Spider-Man at USJ (even that is gone...) In Japan, which hates conflicts, just seeing the word MARVEL appear is a miracle. For Japan, OLC held a ``limited time'' event featuring the child Groot as a ``cute character'' like Baymax or Stitch. OLC, including the Avengers that appeared in the current Castle Show, is probably in the "preparation stage" to promote MARVEL attractively from the Japanese perspective so that the Avengers can play an active role in TDL, TDS, etc. in the future. I've talked about this for a long time, but as a Disney nerd, I think it's a great achievement that they've been able to promote MARVEL so much during the current economic downturn at TDL. Thank you for reading this text through the translator to the end. “MARVEL Forever”

I appreciate this perspective, the problem americans are having is the complete opposite. In the US parks, theres been "oversaturation" of Marvel with a lot of mixed reactions. Also many people are purists and see Its a Small World as sacred and shouldnt be touched in general.
@Droids134 сағат бұрын
Thank you for your point of view. We forget, sometimes, that other parks do not have the immersions that we see in the USA parks. While I am warming to the different plusing overlays, I am slightly a purist at heart. I have an emotional connection with the original experience, as my family saw it at the 1964 World's Fair. However, that does not mean I look at it negatively. I think that is just nostalgia for something I did not get to experience. It is Disney after all.

As much as I think Marvel doesn't fit with Its a Small World, I'd say this is tastefully done. The MCU characters barely take away from the original ride, with them only being sprinkled throughout. Theyre subtly included (the music tracks for each are a bit loud tho imo) and dont glaringly look out of place overall. I am aware that this is to introduce the Japanese Audience to the MCU, and honestly I'd say they blend in quite well overall. It is just bizarre to see them here as an American, though. Also I know Ms Marvel is from Pakistan and Dr Strange was by India, but honestly missed opportunity to include Moon Knight directly on the Pyramids imo.

Not only is throwing comic book superheros in a ride about world peace and unity make zero sense, but it's also way too much IP overload/brand synergy being thrown into the ride and now it's nothing more than a scavenger hunt to find a certain character rather than focusing on and enjoying the theme of the ride. I'm going to state something I expect to be unpopular: I think this overlay is fantastic. I really, really hated the interloper non-IASW Disney characters who moved in and brought their cacophony of music cues with them. Pinocchio, Cinderella, and the worst offender of all: Aladdin. (TURN OFF YOUR MOBILE PHONE ALADDIN! We don't need to hear your stupid "A Whole New World" ringtone every few seconds.) These characters feel shoehorned in in a place they don't fit and are trying to put on their best poker face to convince you otherwise. I would have preferred if Lilo and Stitch were only in the Holiday version of the attraction, but they are the least out-of-place characters in the ride and thankfully bring no music cues with them. I hate the spotlight on Pinocchio. I don't like three mermaids singing with a solo voice (They fixed this in Holiday, so maybe they're going to repair it.) This makes the attraction feel like a stupid version of "Where's Waldo" where Waldo is too easy to find. I'll point out that I'd hate this if this was IASW was to be from now on. This isn't right as the show. It's a major distortion of the creative vision of the attraction. So, why is it fantastic? First off, it's temporary. It might pop up every so-so often, but it's not going to wear out its welcome like the other interloper characters have. Second, there is a story being told here. It's a timely story. The Marvel characters took a round-the-world vacation and are acting like prototypical tourists, only slightly misbehaving and acting inappropriately at tourist spots. This has to resonate well with the Japanese audience who in the Post-COVID world welcomed a lot of tourists who often have been seeing misbehaving at cultural spots across Japan. (Pull-ups on torii gates? Climbing store facades? Getting a massive mob drunk and wasted on Halloween in Shibuya?) The story told in these vignettes is genius. I have to praise the showrunner who came up with this storyline. It leans on "Yeah, we feel this at Tokyo Disney Resort too". Third, the execution is great. The characters are really cute. They're engaged in the story. They don't feel cheap. The presentations of them are genuinely funny. You see Groot posing as one of the Tivoli Gardens Marching Band soldiers. He's got his camera, he just got impulsive and joined along. You can see the theme continue in all of the Avengers appearances later on in the attraction. These characters express that they don't belong in these places with props and actions. They're lampshading their own appearance in the attraction, true to Marvel. They have their bags packed already and will be out on a plane in a few months. Fourth: The soundtrack. It doesn't stomp all over the Sherman Brothers' composition. It is a further arrangement of their iconic song. No cacophony of melodies. (Remember that the reason the song was composed in the first place was to create a single song with a single melody because trying to have all the characters sing their own national anthems sounded horrible.) It honors the original attraction and the lessons learned in 1964 (and forgotten during the interloper Disney character injection). I wouldn't be against these guys making brief (emphasis on that word) visits to the other versions of the attraction around the world - but never for too long, and preferably on an unpredictable schedule. (And ideally, in parks that are in lands which have also experienced the over tourism boom that underpins the story.) If this tried to move in permanently I'd be right there with the pitchfork crowd. We don't need another semi-permanent Disney+ advertisement. Their stated intention is a short run. If they stick to it, more power to them. I wish I could experience this myself in person but I visited just before and during the closure back in September. I am looking forward to my next trip to Tokyo Disney Resort. I'm excited to see my favorite Disney princess is finally getting her own ride! But I'll miss at least the initial run of this overlay. I'd like it if when they moved out they packed up the interloper Disney characters with them when they left. And further, I'd really like to see storytelling as the cornerstone of attractions. Doesn't have to be heavy, but it has to work. I just don't want this to turn into another Hyperspace Mountain fiasco. On to a totally unrelated rant related to the fall of Disney attraction storytelling: Tiana's Bayou Adventure is a hot mess due to executive meddling that results in a weak story. The original story beats Tony Baxter put in and explained in detail on his video pointed out that a tension portion of it on the lift hill scene had to exist due to the dread of the perceived danger of the large drop that's clearly visible at the front of the attraction, and this was wiped away from TBA due to a desire to avoid portrayals of voodoo like in the original film, due to this being perceived as offensive. Think of the irony that they pulled "Splash Mountain" due to its association with "Song of the South" for fear of the highly sanitized version of the story presented would tie into unrelated portions of the original movie where they even declared a holy war on the SONGS including one that had been basically the company anthem for decades - to replace it with a story badly tied into a more recent property that they tried to trim away portions of the story that in a very short period of time were declared insensitive, but were critical to the success of the story of the movie.
