The reason why these tests continue to hold up to this day is because they went through all the man-made hard work to recreate the destruction, wind, and appearance of an actual tornado using actual props. We rely on so much computer imagery that even the best works look very fake. Man-made efforts take a lot more time and money, but their payoff ultimately wins over CGI. This is why the original animatronic dinosaurs from Jurassic Park continue to be praised after all these years. It looks far more convincing for the effect to actually be present on set vs. having it added in post.

I totally agree with you there's nothing like the old special facts is still fascinating me how realistic it looks now today if these new movies now stop using Cgi and go back to the basic then our movies will be more realistic

Exactly! And it's not just special and/or practical effects either, it's also sets and scenery! A painted cyclorama of scenery to serve as the backdrop for the set of your scene has so much more warmth, depth, and charm as opposed to CGI scenery that was matted onto a green/blue screen backdrop.

Amazing! This twister could easily compete with modern CGI. Well, until the view through the window, anyway.

Canned Laughter maybe they could use some of these shots for the film adaptation of “Wicked.”

I'm really wondering how the film producers made the storm clouds, it looks so much like a real storm. MGM really outdone themselves with this movie!

(Angela Lansbury's narrations for each test and the opening) 0:04 Buddy Gillespie and his special effects crew outdid themselves when it came to creating the tornado that is so important to the story of Oz. Here, you'll see some of the raw footage they shot for the Kansas sequence of the picture. 0:19 These are the rays of sun that break through the clouds as Dorothy finishes singing Over the Rainbow. 0:34 This long-shot shows the tornado as it moves across the Kansas prairie. 1:41 Here are two takes of the funnel cloud as it moves in for its closeup. 4:04/4:05 They also printed two takes of the Kansas farmhouse rising and falling through the air. 4:55 This is the view through Dorothy's bedroom window during the storm. Not all of this footage was used in the final cut of the film. 6:59 This extraordinary take starts with the tornado in repose on the miniature set of the Gale farm, then all the mechanics are put into play and the storm envelopes the house. This shot was deleted from the rough cut of the film. It was planned as the first scene of Dorothy's delirium. (There you have it, everyone. That's how Mrs. Potts herself explained the tornado effects and the sun rays in Over the Rainbow)

My favorite scene when the tornado moves across kansas prairie and the deleted scene when the twister sucked up the house its epic for 1939

It is absolutely extraordinary how incredibly realistic the tornado scene was in The Wizard of Oz. It's hard to believe that these special effects were done in 1939! That was before computer generated imagery was even considered an idea! And it was also at a time when our knowledge on the behavior and dynamics of tornadoes was very limited. Even today, this tornado scene still receives widespread acclaim for the realism the special effects crew put into creating this scene in the movie; in fact, many say that it matches or exceeds many CGI equivalents today.

Oh, it's absolutely better than anything filmed since. It puts CGI to shame.

the inside of the tornado gag was pretty clever and will still be clever throughout most movies that involve comedy and tornado's. and yes it was pretty funny to watch everyone in the tornado flying around in the view of Dorothy's window, except for this 6:24. god... mrs gulch coming towards the window just to slowly become the wicked witch of the east always scared the shit out of me. 7:01 oh thats worse... that is way worse then the original scene. I hate that so much. It looks alot scarier now that its real up close to the house. ahhh... AAAHHHHHHH OH I HATE IT. AAAAHHHHHHHH

the footage of the long shot tornado was also used in Cabin in the Sky(1943) and High Barbaree(1947)as those were also made by MGM. Edit: this tornado footage at 1:57 was also used on a trailer for the human tornado(1976).

I don't know if this part of the OZ twister scene, but it certainly showing a multi vortex tornado. Something we wouldn't even know about until the Super Out Break film footage from Parker IN, in 1974
