This film just made my heart sing. It captured so perfectly what a meaningful life involves. Our protagonist, George Bailey, lives the values of family, community and goodness. It was the most charming film I have ever had the pleasure of watching, truly. The film is an invitation to each one of us to reassess our lives and remember our own light. Emulating George’s appreciation for life, what is wonderful about your own life that you’re grateful for?

Grateful? I fought death to a draw in 2020 and THAT was a real duel. Ever since, I’ve not really cared about minor things. Truth be told, I do NOT like this movie (for reasons I’ll keep to myself) but I watched this because YOU made it and you deserve a fair measure of creative loyalty. So here we are on Christmas. I'm not sure what's wonderful in my life tbh, but this movie is very sentimental to me, my great aunt gave me this on dvd as a Christmas present the year before she passed, my grandmother has also passed always think of her around Christmas, Merry Christmas Kate. beautiful earrings. I've seen this movie hundreds of times, dozens of times on a repeat this particular holiday season. Brings the happy tears every time. It's good to be reminded that for every bad guy, there is a George Bailey out there doing without doing for others. Had this been an actual date I would have brought an extra hanky for the lady 🤧❤ I'm grateful that I inherited my father's ability to narrowly escape death. And his swagger.

@MovieDateWithKate - Many, MANY things and people to be grateful for that are wonderful: 5 senses - wonderful to see the autumn colors, hear the wind whisper and gust, feel the breeze against my skin, be able to walk out in the elements, and soon to taste the holiday festive food. Passion for Beauty, Life, Love, with God, with others. Gratitude for increasing awareness of what and who is most important to and for me, as well as deepening care for such people. And in a polarized time, I frankly thank God for helping me navigate tensions and conflicts with discernment as to what battles to choose, while maintaining Love for my fellow man/woman, and having a backbone. Films such as this remind me of the vital importance of standing against evil, serving others in our common shared interests and human dignity, and to dare to "think outside the box", i.e. maybe not all of my dreams are my calling and mission in life. Maybe...the Divine has other plans for me that are ultimately better and more fulfilling. In a place like America, where "chase your dreams" is an accepted mantra, there are many dashed hopes similar to a George Bailey. Well? Maybe we need to re-think that. Hell, I'm 1 year too young to be Gen X, and I remember watching Simon Birch in my Grade 9 class, and about 80% of the kids counted down until Simon died because they just wanted to go home. Now we know why everyone's so afraid of "woke." They might have to feel something. This new generation isn't capable of feeling anything.

I'll never not point out how incredible Stewart's performance during the scene where he prays in the bar is. There's a realism that he brought with pretty much every performance I've seen of his, but in that scene in particular, he took his experiences during WWII and delivered one of the finest, most emotionally penetrating acting clinics I've ever seen.

It is indeed, and the close up was not planned. Capra enlarged the shot in post production to spotlight James Stewart's terrific acting (that's way the close up is a little grainy).

This is without a doubt the best Xmas movie made. I know generations younger than mine may disagree but the story is timeless. I'm 66 years old and have seem this every year without fail. First with my mom and dad and later with my children. To this day, I still cry at the end because after all, "George Bailey is and always has been the richest man in town".. in so many ways..

I have to admit this is one of my absolute favorite movies! In fact, this movie in a large way help shape my life. I Loved the philosophy of what the Bailey's family business stood for, so much that my brothers and I all became active tradesmen each in our own field of expertise. My older brother was a carpenter and our general contractor, I became an electrician, and my younger brother runs a large roofing crew that also does siding, windows, and doors. (exterior work) We could have been considered The Bailey's Building and Loan of the last 30 years here where we live. Unfortunately, Cancer took my older brother so my younger brother and I still try to keep up our family name to the best of our ability, but each in our own field.

I really like that you all did that and helped people maintain and build their homes. What a lovely trade to excel in. The film was a treasure, and I too loved the philosophy of it. As a US Air Force vet I love Jimmy Stewart in this classic also because he was a WWII US Army Air Corps veteran & this was his first film after returning home. He was seriously traumatized with his experience as a bomber pilot & the staggering number of aircrew losses he witnessed. The tears shed in the bar scene were real drawing from his combat experience. He retired as a 1 star brigadier general in the US Air Force in 1968, 6 yrs before I enlisted & was not only a Hollywood super star but a military hero and legend.

Im an Air Force veteran and two of my brothers and my sister. One uncle was a chief Master Sargent when he retired and was a "consultant" (cough cough) at Langley and another uncle who was a pilot in the US Air Corp who died when his plane went down. My dad a Marine at 17 when he landed on Saipan and then Tinian and later during the Korean war. I just retired from the VA Medical Center January 2024.

You just watched my favorite movie of all time. Not an exaggeration. I first watched it around age 19, nearly 30 years ago, and it's been my favorite ever since. No other story like it ever told through a movie that touches on every element of humanity: friendship, family, love, sacrifice, greed, evil, regret, perspective and reminder of what's important in life and how we all, through doing the right thing despite challenge and distress, make a difference more than we know, and that doesn't even begin to touch on its brillance in its delivery. Jimmy Stewart had just returned from WWII seven months earlier. He served as a bomber pilot, flying B-24 Liberators with the 8th Air Force in Europe. He participated in 20 combat missions, often flying deep into enemy territory. Stewart returned from the war deeply affected by his experiences as a bomber pilot, where he witnessed and endured the loss of crew members and the intense pressures of combat. He was still suffering from PTSD during the making of the film. The scene at Martini's bar where he's crying and praying was real emotion. I was fortunate to have met him back in 1977. Great actor and a wonderful person.

What an amazing surprise to come home on Christmas evening and see this ageless, timeless classic movie in my notifications from my favorite movie reactor, Kate. My favorite Christmas movie and one of the all time great movies. So many emotions one experiences through this movie from laughter to empathy to outright sadness (tears) and ultimately joy. The overriding message is that every human being matters. The way that the townspeople of Bedford Falls ultimately came to the assistance of George Bailey in his hour of need shows how much he truly mattered. Actor James Stewart, who played George Bailey, portrayed a man struggling with his self worth, fighting emotions. In real life, when 'It's a Wonderful Life' was filmed Stewart had recently returned from WWII. As a bomber pilot in Europe, he was struggled with all he went through in the war. Today, we would call this PTSD. He continued acting and serving in both the Army Air Corps and then in the Air Force retiring in 1967 at the rank of Brigadier General having flown missions in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. His acting accolades are nearly as impressive as his military career awards. For this role, Mr. Stewart received an Academy Award nomination. The Oscar winner turned out to be Fredric March, who won for 'The Best Years of our Lives', which dealt with soldiers coming back from WWII. Something that Stewart was quite familiar with based on his own experiences. Reminds me of 'Band of Brothers', which you are currently watching. Ironically, the film was not a box office success upon release. It was not until years later with the advent of television that it became a classic. Much like 'The Wizard of Oz' in that regard. Director Frank Capra said of the movie's ultimate success "The film has a life of its own now, and I can look at it like I had nothing to do with it. I'm like a parent whose kid grows up to be President. I'm proud, but it's the kid who did the work. I didn't even think of it as a Christmas story when I first ran across it. I just liked the idea."

George and Mary's marriage is so wonderful to see. They cared for each other deeply. George made it possible for families to own houses, while Mary turned his own house into a true home. Such a great reaction to one of the best movies, not just Christmas movies, of all time in my mind. Even as a bitter and heartless old man (or so I'm told) I tear up every time I watch this movie. And for someone who has struggled so much with depression and self-destructive thoughts throughout my life, the lesson of this movie has always been one of the reasons I've never given in to those urges. Jimmy Stewart, who played George Bailey, had just come home from serving as the pilot of a B-24 bomber in WWII when this movie started production. After flying so many bombing missions over Germany in the course of his service and seeing all the death and destruction of a world war, he was suffering from what we'd now call PTSD. Lionel Barrymore (the hated Mr. Potter) was the main one who got Jimmy Stewart to take this role when he really didn't want to, and the end result was that Stewart ended up playing the character that he called his favorite of the ones he played. The movie was therapeutic for him as well. Stewart said that acting out the scenes where George was enraged was cathartic for him. While filming the scene in which George prays in the bar Jimmy Stewart was so overcome because of how low he felt in his own life that he began to sob. Frank Capra later re-framed and blew up the shot because he wanted to catch that expression on Stewart's face. It really hammers home the feeling of Stewart BEING George Bailey. Jimmy Stewart was such a brilliant actor anyway, but this role might have been great therapy for him as well as a perfect role for him to play. And if nothing else we can be thankful to the awful Mr. Potter for getting Jimmy Stewart to do this movie. Three strongly recommended classic black and white movies: The Thin Man (1934): A comedic murder mystery starring William Powell and Myrna Loy who had such brilliant chemistry together that they played either husband and wife or boyfriend/girlfriend in over a dozen different movies. Many people even thought that they were actually married instead of just good friends who worked well together. This was the first of a series of six movies of which this one and the next two, After The Thin Man (with Jimmy Stewart playing a supporting role) and Another Thin Man, were the best (they were also the scripts that were done by the author who created these characters, Dashiell Hammett. He also wrote the noir crime story The Maltese Falcon, which was an excellent movie with Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade) although the last three aren't bad. My Man Godfrey (1936): Basically a screwball romantic comedy starring William Powell and Carole Lombard. William Powell had enough star power at this time that he had the right to reject projects. After reading the script Powell said he would only do the movie if Lombard was cast as the female lead as he insisted that no one could play the role as well as she could. This was unusual as the pair had divorced (an amicable divorce, obviously) a few years before. Lombard would unfortunately die in a plane crash in 1942 at the age of 33. Topper Returns (1941): Another comedic murder mystery (I do not have a type. Hush) about a mild and milquetoast banker named Cosmo Topper, played by Roland Young, who has the misfortune of occasionally having ghosts come and demand his help. The setting and other characters are all wonderful and the script is great. Taking place mostly in a rambling manor house that has some haunted house elements to it, the house itself is as much of a character for the secrets hidden within it. As I don't like the standard horror films, this is one of my Halloween must watch movies. You were so delightful to watch! I've now subbed and I will be looking forward to future reactions!

It really is a perfectly written story. I have watched this movie probably close to a hundred times. I have never been quick to tears but I tear up to flat out fall apart Everytime as the ending unfolds!

It's always beautiful to see someone watch this classic for the first time. This is my second favorite film of all time, after William Wyler’s “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Wyler’s film came out the same year and dominated the Academy Awards. Ironically Wyler and Capra were partners in the independent production company that made both films. Capra and Stewart both regarded this as the best film in their careers. Its production was a miracle in itself. The author was Philip Van Doren Stern, a prominent historian and author, who couldn’t sell the short story the movie is based on. So he sent it out to friends as a homemade, illustrated Christmas card. The story captivated Capra, who bought the rights. Stewart had come back from the war as a decorated hero, having led a bomber squadron on some 20 runs over Germany, but he had PTSD and thought he would never act again. Thankfully, his good friend, Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter), talked him into accepting the role. Stewart was drawing on real emotions in his dramatic scenes, especially in the prayer at the bar. Capra’s unmatched ability to move a story smoothly from comedy to drama and back to joy is on fully display in this film. He was aided in this by a tremendous group of character actors who appeared in many of his movies. Thomas Mitchell (Uncle Billy) won an Oscar for his performance in “Stagecoach.” Beulah Bondi (Ma Bailey) was a Broadway star in the 1920s and became a great character actor as she aged. I love her remarkable transformation from a loving mother to a crusty old woman in this film. H. B. Warner (Mr. Gower) was a popular star of the 1920s and also moved into character roles as he aged. He got an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Capra’s “Lost Horizon” (1937).

The subtleties in this movie are really great. For example, he begs Clarence to get him back to his wife and kids, but it isn't until he officially acknowledges God that the prayer is answered and it starts snowing again - indicating things are back to normal. I like how the movie shows everyone praying at the beginning knowing George is in trouble. And although George is unaware of it, God already has a plan in place to help him in his darkest hour. (It makes me think of Psalm 34:6 in the Bible which says, "This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.") So appropriate for this movie and so appropriate in life. Thanks for the review!

I was born the year after this film was made and I don't remember for sure at what age I first saw it, but the scene that always stuck with me was the scene on the telephone when Sam reminds Mary to tell George it's the chance of a lifetime (to invest in plastics). Of course the situation has a douible meaning as George and Mary are positioned so as to nearly be in each others arms on the other end of the telephone. The emotions, which teeter on edge of life's disappointments, anger, love, and desire, are on display in a way I don't believe I've ever seen captured so well. I felt it as a kid and I feel it to this day when I watch this movie. Modern movies trying to convey feelings of sexual desire and love seem amateurish and adolescent in comparison. That's my all time favorite scene. And my final take away (other than Clarence's thought about the value of friends) is that every married person should have a marriage like George and Mary's; one where life contantly reminds them over and over again that they've led an exemplary life and made the finest possible choice in a life partner. Your channel is new and I think you've reviewed fewer than 10 movies, however, you've made one helluva start in the choices you've made. I hope your good taste continues and that your choices include at least periodically, some of the classic movies of the early to mid-20th century.

Jimmy Stewart was known for doing light comedies in the early part of his career. During WWII he was a bomber pilot and when the war ended he realized that he had to change and do more "weighty" parts. After It's A Wonderful Life he took on different roles and started doing westerns. Director Anthony Mann hired him for projects and one of the films they did together was Winchester 73. There was a fight scene in a bar and Jimmy pushed an outlaw's head onto the bar and he did it with so much anger that audiences were shocked! He was a great actor and stayed in the Air Force (in an inactive roll) until 1968, retiring as a Brigadier General. An amazing man, Thanks for another great reaction and have a wonderful holiday!

They even have ration books. I found it very interesting and fun to watch. They wanted to see first hand what and how their relatives ate during the war. Brought to tears. I was brought to tears watching this movie with you. I have seen this film many, many times. It has always been a Christmas tradition to see it, it never gets old. I hadn't seen it yet this year, and had the movie cued up and ready to watch tonight. But then I saw you had a reaction video posted and decided to see it with you. It was wonderful to do so. As if seeing it for the first time. There is a wholesomeness to it, a purity, a display of the best in humanity that we don't often see, especially today. "It's a Wonderful Life" is a smart twist on "A Christmas Carol". George Bailey was a wonderful man who always helped others, but was miserable deep inside. Before it was too late, he learned how wonderful Life is thanks to him, and that everyone saw him as a wonderful man.

Thanks for doing Kate. FYI, three of the Bailey children are still alive. Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu) is 84. Carol Coombs (Janie) is 89. Jimmy Hawkins (Tommy) is 83. The last credited actor was Virginia Patton died in Aug 2022. She played Harry Bailey's wife. She was also Gen George Patton's niece. Sam Wainright was played by Frank Albertson. 14 years later Frank also played the creepy guy with the $$$ in the movie Psycho. Potter was played by Lionel Barrymore who is Drew' Barrymore's great uncle.

you seem to know a lot about the actors. Maybe you can confirm if this is true or not: it's a story I heard a long time ago: Shortly after this movie was made, the little girl who played Zuzu's real life parents were both tragically killed in a car accident and she was raised by foster parents. She was never told that she was in this movie and was obviously too young to have a good memory of it. It wasn't until much later in her adulthood that she finally discovered that had been part of this classic. Like I said, i don't know how true this is, but I remember learning it from a fairly reliable source many years ago. If it is true, could you imagine? Being part of one of the most famous movies ever when you were four, and not knowing it for many many years?

@@jasonward1470 Yes, there is a Wiki page about her if you want to look up. She was 6 when she made IaWL. Zuzu (Karloyn) also played the daughter Debbie in The Bishops Wife a year later and Fred McMurray's daughter a year earlier in Pardon My Past. Her mother had early onset Alzheimer's and father died in auto accident. She was an orphan at age 15 if I remember right. I'd have to re read the Wiki but I think she knew she was in the movie but it wasn't popular until the 1980's and it brought some attention to her then. IaWL was not a popular movie when it came out. On a saddder note Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart did not get along w each other. A few years later Donna was up for a part w Jimmy Stewart in another movie (that escapes me right now) but JS refused to work w her again and she lost the part.

It is so heartwarming to watch the youger generations learn to appreciate these classic movies. Also, I was so happy that you reacted to the original black and white film. Irregardless of what some people think colorizing these old movies ruins the magic. Here are a few other old black and white movies that have stood the test of time that I think you might like. It's been my all-time favorite movie for nearly 60 years now, and it did my heart well to watch your reaction. Frank Capra films are all heart-touching, so much so, they were refered to as "Capra-corn" for being so "corny." I'll take a Capra film over any other any day of the week. I started watching it as a kid with my family (I'm in my mid 40s now, so we're talking mid 80s was the first time I saw it). It used to come on ALL THE TIME because there was an issue over its copyright renewal. It quit being shown like that some 25 years ago though...now only channels owned by NBC here in the states can show it. I still really liked it back as a kid, but it wasn't until I got to be an adult myself and had disappointments, etc that it really hit me how wonderful it truly is.

This is one of those movies that you appreciate the older you get. I saw this for the first time in ‘74 at 9 years old. It didn’t mean as much then, but continued to grow on mr over time! I can see my kids start to appreciate it and love it now.
