Someone probably already mentioned this but the actor Jimmy Stewart had just come back from flying 26 missions during world war 2. He was dealing with PTSD during the filming. When he was praying at the bar and started crying 24:13, that wasn't in the script.

As I’ve gotten older and seen the film more, the more I really feel sorry for Uncle Billy. He’s a fragile man mentally who is only holding it together because of first his brother and then his nephew. Ending up in an asylum in a George-less world sadly makes sense. His saying that it hurts to think when George is shaking him is so revealing.
@kathyastrom131521 сағат бұрын
The phone call scene: George is depressed over losing his dreams of leaving Bedford Falls to travel around the world. Everyone, including his own mother, is telling him that Mary is the girl for him. He knows deep down that in addition to being his true love, she represents everything that he loves about the town and his life there, but he doesn’t want to let go of those dreams. His shaking her is one last gasp of him seeing those dreams fly away, and then he embraces her and everything she stands for. He’s not settling, but he’s finally letting go of that lifelong vision of himself as an explorer. For the rest of the film, he struggles with accepting a new vision of himself, the community builder and family man. It’s only after his crisis of the soul, Clarence, and his redemption by that community, that he finally sees himself as he has become-the centerpiece of his town and a beloved husband and father. (BTW, Sam wasn’t a conman when he offered to get George in on the ground floor of plastics. He was giving him a legit offer, something he definitely owed George, who was the one to tell him about the industry as well as suggest Sam take advantage of the empty factory and available labor force in Bedford Falls, another way he added to his community. Having the chance to repay George with that $25k offer at the end would have been a relief to him, knowing how much he owed his lifelong friend.)

4:21 - He HAS to taste it: this isn't 2024, with technology. This is 1919, in a small town and this is a small pharmacy. Once upon a time, please realize, that when people made up their medicines they DID taste, smell and use their other senses. Of course he has to taste it - there is no other way for him to tell what's in it, and it's probably why he accidentally put the poison in there. If you pay attention to the dialogue and the action beforehand, it will become very clear why George looks a the poison bottle and runs to his father for advice. I hope it becomes more clear to you upon re-watch. Remember the time and place that this is. You need to take things like that into account.

It was the Great Depression, when the banks were closed, and Potter was paying half for the money in the banks. They are honestly so lucky their town was ensured with Potter and that the Baileys took out the $2000 before that day.
@MoviesinDepth21 сағат бұрын
With that context that would have made wayyyy more sense!
@auapplemac244114 сағат бұрын
No, sorry, but the Bailey's did not take out a $2000 insurance policy from Potter. Not even certain there was insurance for bank failures before the Great Depression. That law was passed because of the depression to protect peoples savings. If they had no protection, people would stop using banks and keep their money in their mattresses. There would be no money to finance construction, new business, mortgages, etc. The $2000 was George's and Mary's Honeymoon money. They were going to travel to NYC and then Bermuda. The money was probably for college which he no longer needed since he was married and had taken over the Savings and Loan because Harry was no longer available to do it. Potter wasn't the bank, he was a money lender and investor. After the bank failed, he bought it for half the value. He now owned every source of financing for the people and businesses of the town except for the saving and loan.
@sherylannd681312 сағат бұрын
@@auapplemac2441 I didn't say the Baileys took it from Potter, I meant they were lucky they took the money out of the bank, or just saved it before the Depression hit. I meant the town itself was lucky they had a rich person to help the bank so their small town didn't become a giant Hooverville. Potter was still a bad man and took advantage of the disaster, but they had the Baileys to stop him from taking over completely so they were pretty lucky overall considering the state of the rest of the country. And yeah now the bonks have a limit on a monetary amount they guarantee their customers, that's why people who have a LOT of money will/should split it between banks so they won't pass that threshold.

Banking: You have no cash on hand. Your entire account, if you had one, at the local bank has gone temporarily poof. Potter is offering you 50 cents for every dollar you had at the bank. If you have an account at the Bailey’s building and loan, you can wait the 60 days as per your contract with them, or you can take Potter’s offer. Again, you have no cash on hand and won’t for 60 days unless you take Potter’s offer. Your family’s breadwinner is possibly out of a job or on a reduced salary due to the Depression. All you need is $17.50 or $20 to get you by until the financial institutions get an influx of cash. So you take the bad deal from Potter because it’s the only offer out there. Until Congress and FDR instituted banking reforms in mid-1933, this happened all over the country. Bedford Falls is lucky enough to have Mary and George Bailey.

I love this movie, but one film critic called it Capracorn. I had to look that up: The term "Capracorn" was used by Bosley Crowther, a film critic for The New York Times, to describe "It's a Wonderful Life." He used it to criticize the film's sentimentality, suggesting that it was overly idealistic and sweet, much like other Frank Capra films. Despite the initial criticism, the film has since become a beloved classic. Here's a good definition of critics: “A critic is a legless man who teaches running”--Channing Pollock

Fun fact: the snowy Christmas Eve scenes were actually shot during a July heat wave. In fact, the day before the director had sent everyone home before noon, after two actors fainted from the heat. Not that anyone's asking, but the actor playing Mr Potter is Lionel Barrymore. He's Drew Barrymore's great-uncle. And he actually did have to use a wheelchair at that stage in his life - not sure if he lost the use of his legs in an accident or through an illness. The Barrymore's are basically acting royalty, they've been on stage, screen and radio since the 1900s at least. Lionel's sister Ethel Barrymore had a 60 year career and she was dubbed 'The First Lady of the American Theatre", I think she starred in a movie with Lionel and their brother John Barrymore (Drew Barrymore's grandfather - her dad was called John Drew Barrymore pretty sure he was an actor as well), I know Lionel and John starred together in a movie called 'Grand Hotel', you would not believe that it's the same man comparing Lionel Barrymore's character in Grand Hotel and Mr Potter in this movie.

Fun, yes, but also understand what you're watching. I'm glad by the time it was over, you did realize the importance of this story. If this isn't a Christmas story, don't know what is. Don't want to sound soppy, but if you're reviewing a movie, then it's best to understand the story. So many of today''s movies have no real story except who's killing who and when are they going to blow up something.
