Great conversation as a Safrican here in the uS I cannot say it better, things are so expensive here than back home.

I never tip according to guidelines. I don't even go out to eat in the U S. My former wife use to say " you don't care nothing about money on vacation". I take care of servers internationally. We dined at signatures one night Joburg. About 16 of us. Then we had them give everybody a separate bill. It probably was a little aggravating for the staff but they were gracious. Guy I rode with gave his young server a tip, she turned to the young server beside her and held up the tip, jumped up and down a couple times like she just opened a Christmas gift and it was what she was hoping for. You really like to take care of people who appreciate it.

Dining out for us is in the U.S. is a fairly rare occasion anymore. It Atlanta, dining for a party of 4 is easily a $250 (USD) affair nowadays at a sit-down restaurant, especially if it includes a steak or seafood item. Then, slap on a 15-20% tip. 🥵 But yes, there is something different about knowing and seeing the money you work hard for have a significant impact on another, and I guess that’s the difference. While “every little bit helps” here, the impact on the individual is not as notable because we are accustomed to it, and the “hustle” will produce yields in a cumulative fashion. 16 separate bills tho…😮💨🥵

@MelAndMe 😄😀, there was like three couples so maybe 11 bills. One husband and wife they kept bringing courvoisiers none stop. No they get their own bill. 😀

These people trying to give you cards, tell them you already have, then they go away. 😂😂

My advice is, if there is a negative comment just search for information about that individual person.

Most of negative comments dont come from SAfricans...i right they should check

We don’t really let it bother us, either way. Opinions will run the gamut. The cream will always rise to the top. 😊

" Lay buy " Pay installment for three months or six months whilst the goods are still held in the store.

THANK YOU!🤗 I could not recall. Also more clarity, as I thought it was “lay (BY)” (as in “lay by…the side”) 😄 I equate that to lay (away). That’s the fun in it though - drawing the cultural parallels and becoming proficient in making the shifts in communication.

The more you stay here the more you will learn who to give tips to and who not to. I always give to the elderly as they are retired and cannot work.

Elders definitely get the consideration.

We have a begger on the street near us with a crutch, I always gave money to him until I saw him packing up one day and he walked off without using the crutch, then got into a mecedes car far more expensive than mine and he drove off only to be back again everyday. But there are many others that go without food everyday so you never know who needs it.

😮💨🤦🏾♂️ Occasionally, you hear stories of people who do stuff like that. You are correct though. One must use their best judgement. Being better armed with info. to help with that discernment is good though.

That's no true. Why you lie?

People on the streets, especially women with the baby are actually part of a syndicate, they are hired to beg and at the end of the day, the dealer collects the money. I would not encourage giving them the money. You mean we'll but the money actually goes to the pimp. It's organised crime.

EEK!! 😱😳🥴 What a shocker! 🤦🏾♂️ It just goes to show, that one can indeed be “street savvy”, but unfamiliar environments will always have a new lesson that awaits. 😏 Greatly appreciate that insight. 🙌🏾 It certainly gives us something to think about in the future.
