The crazy thing about both the New York law and 3D print general that Germans may not be aware of is that 3d printing guns or really manufacturing your own firearm through any means here in the US is perfectly legal without any special licensing whatsoever.

@xantras6661 Except that banning information leads to drawn out legal battles in the USA that get adjudicated under the 1st Amendment. I do know French law may be different however. They tried that years ago by categorizing certain blueprints under ITAR but under said regulations the courts still had to let the creator share them with those legally able to receive ITAR information.

At 29:30, you stated my sentiments exactly about RepRap Festivals. After I received the floorplan for ERRF, showing where I would be displaying my 5-axis 3D printing concept, and how few true innovators were given space to attend, I canceled my table. I told the folks running ERRF that I was disappointed in how many 'Sponsor' spots they sold, compared with the first event they created. I understand the need to have sponsored booths to pay for the event, however they were pulling too far away from the RepRap concept. I was glad to see that they changed the name, but it should have been changed to East Coast 3D Printing Marketplace. I may demo my new printing concept at RMRRF but at MRRF for sure. Hope to see one or both of you there. Thanks for this channel, love the news, information and opionions.

Good points on the whole Bambu/Propriatary vs Open/Voron. I think you're right that we're going to end up with a few propriatary 'closed' printers and those will be for the 'normal' user - ie someone who does not tinker, or build their own printer at all. Things like Voron are clearly the future for the open source side of things, and I suspect bed slingers, marlin et all will die off fairly rapidly over the next few years, likely aided by Prusa when they eventually move to corexy for their main line of printers and the i3 range becomes obsolite. I do think that Prusa is going to massively struggle to adapt. The cracks have been showing a lot this year, with lots of reports of poor support, long shipping times and overall an experience that is very much the opposite of what Prusa has historically been known for. They're clearly having a lot of problems internally, and the XL looks to have been a pretty big part of that.
@andreas.grundler
@andreas.grundler Жыл бұрын
I don't think bedslingers will disappear so quickly. They have advantages for the manufacturers. They are easier to build, cheaper to manufacture, can be packed flat to save space and save shipping cost, and are easier to maintain and repair. Even Babu Lab, who have given themselves the motto "No more bedslinger", have opted for a beslinder design for the A1 Mini. My biggest problem with Babu Lab is not that they are closed source but the patents they have filed so far. Patents are dangerous because you can frame them in such a general way that you can prevent innovation. Stratasys did this with a few simple patents for 20 years and only after they expired could the 3D printing market flourish. Their patent for active build space heating expired a few months ago and now the first affordable printers with active build space heating have entered the market.

The comparison is a bit misleading since there are not more and more homemade vehicles on the streets of New York but more and more homemade weapons are found. The problem is that these guns are mainly used for crimes. But I think that regulating 3D printers is a bad idea. It would be better to criminalize the manufacturing of the guns themselves, so that law enforcement has a better hand against the people who abuse 3D printing in this way. 3D printing should be something positive.

Raise3D has a new commercial IDEX printer with linear motors too (the RMF500). IDEX is really interesting using this technology, as it should be straight forward to add additional print heads. So long as you have parking space off the side (which does mean longer rails, with more magnets, so more cost), you can add additional tools that can be shuffled around.

Regarding zeppelins: EASA's website refers to it as "maximum take-off weight (MTOM)", but the acronym obviosly refers to mass. And sure enough, regulation 2019/947 article 2 (definitions) line 22 says "‘maximum take-off mass’ (‘MTOM’) means the maximum Unmanned Aircraft mass, including payload and fuel, as defined by the manufacturer or the builder, at which the Unmanned Aircraft can be operated". So no weight=/=mass loophole unfortunately.

I too got caught out by the Samsung SSD issue. Fortunately I was eventually able to recover the drive and it's data. I hadn't kept the Samsung Magician software running on my PC because it's yet another proprietary utility that runs taking up memory, and I didn't expect a firmware update to be needed on such a device. It's tiresome having lots of proprietary utility programs on a PC. It would be nice if these companies agreed to use a standardized REST API to control devices that would allow all-in-one UI solutions so that consumers can reduce the number of independent utility programs they need to run.

I'm glad the maker space pretty much universally saw the 3D Printer background check bill as a useless idea that would just harm the space. Also I think it shows that politicians are clueless on how important the 3D printing revolution could end up being, or just too out of touch to care. Even just being able to make your own plastic repair parts and tools is a big deal in the present day, and then there was that whole face-shield thing during the pandemic. Someday we might be looking at the sci-fi, "Replicators", seen on TV in the 70's being in the average person's home. It would suck to see that future held back because of some scared lawmakers.

I'm very interested in the Magneto X motors as I'm sure very many people are. As much as the printer looks fine I would much rather just buy the linear motors and drivers. I would probably think that offerering them in what is like defacto standard sizes of 250, 300, 350 or 200, 300 ,400 would be smart to start and then maybe offering longer. I doubt there is much benefit in shorter ones. Either way, just make them available and the community will either adapt to them or build new machines around them. If they work as promised they could take over enthusiest motion systems for printers, lasers, cutting tables etc. The truth is there are lots of niche technologies like this that are controlled by companies who are gouging massively because its all selling to other companies that can just pass on the cost.

And that also exposes another issue with such faulty firmwares: there is no samsung magician for synology drives, so no real way of updating the firmware without removing it from the NAS & finding & pc where i can connect it to (and a usb adapter isn't good enough, has to be connected for real to the computer...) Luckily didn't store any important data that wasn't backed up on the ssd :).

Regarding the SSD failure, I always treated a SSD as being more problematic than a old harddisk. I now always image my SSD once a month and backup every day as well. The Peopoly looks really exciting, way more than a Bambu for me. And regarding Linux, that has changed a bunch, I never quite liked it, but now it's a genuine replacement for me. Developing software on it I also like way better than Windows. It's just too complicated to even choose a release for the regular consumer, given what I see as criticism on Mastodon already I totally agree it's never going to be that successful. But it's so important it exists, that's more of the point I think. I now use Home Assistant instead of proprietary systems, simply because you see the issues popping up around those now. I'm super glad it gives me the option to ignore those other systems.

A zeppelin would weight nothing if filled with light gas but it would still have a very high mass. Mass is a measurement of inertia, weight is a force. There is something we can do about companies doing unethical things. Just point it out, on a large enough platform. It will either make them change their behaviour or help people who value ethical behaviour make a more informed purchase. You guys have such platforms and when you point out that some company do not behave according to the community expectations, it has a real significant impact. Just think about companies who published their source code to comply with GPL licenses after you pointed it out. Regarding the discussion about open source vs closed systems, there is value in both. I believe you two guys are the two best people on the planet to highlight the value of each. I believe a better comparison would be buying a brand name computer vs building one yourself. Does linux makes better os than closed source softwares? Well one could argue that there is significantly more devices running on linux based systems than windows. They might be smartphones instead of computers but it would be hard to argue that smartphones are not an important part of our lives… There is value in promoting open source development. It is hard to see it if you only look at the short term tho.

Stefan is doing that thing where Europeans don't realise how huge North American countries are. From Seattle to Bel Air, Maryland is just under 4,500 km. From Maryland to Berlin is about 6,700 km. Going direct from Seattle to Berlin is about 8,000 km. So, okay - you were already in the country and it would have been closer to get to ERRF from Seattle than from Germany but you really, really were not *close*. So there wouldn't have been any substantial time or money savings if you had gone, other than not having to deal with US Customs twice.

I keep hearing people comparing the A1 mini target to the Prusa mini and I am astonished someone could think of it in that way. There is a huge issue in people in 3d printing, they forgot the value of usability. A1 mini is no contender for the Prusa in industrial / farm applications, prusa will always win, easy to upkeep, probably lasting longer, rugged, and meant to work 100% of the time with open source approach to every bit of it. A1 mini target at consumers that have never had a 3d printer, to our sisters, mothers, brothers that could not care less about changing a parameter, that want ready to print profiles that works. The fact that some enthusiast may like the A1 mini, does not make it the core target. The goal of BambuLab is clearly make it brainless to print something of good quality. Prusa as EVERY open source project has no idea about usability, interface and simplicity. Would you install Linux to your parent PC? Saying that Prusa mini and A1 mini have the same target is basically saying that Iphone and Android with custom rom has the same target because they are both phones...

This law is completely stupid, and if it doesn't die in committee, it's going to be thrown out in court. It covers "any retailer of a three-dimensional printer sold in the state which is capable of printing a firearm or any components of a firearm." With a three-dimensional printer defined as: "a computer or computer-driven machine or device capable of producing a three-dimensional object from a digital model." Which includes desktop 3d printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, even a cricut cutter. (I can see a cop arguing that a sticker is a firearms component.) A 150L tank at 10 bar (145 psi) exploding is a little bit less powerful than a ww2 era hand grenade. While that's not really relevant to your case, it's just to point out that compressed air is **more dangerous than you think**. Keep in mind also that in your case it's constantly being pressurised and depressurised so while you may test it at double the pressure (please use water if you do that) and have it survive fine, repeated stress could cause a failure. If you insist on doing it, at least ensure that by design, if a failure happens, it doesn't happen near your eyes or ears - possibly by making an intentional stress riser to act as a failure point near the caps.

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech. KZbin is a commercial platform on which some people build their businesses. If KZbin decides that they don't want, say, rainbow butterfly kitten videos on their platform, then they have the right to remove any video and any channel that violates their policies. Whether he's a nice guy or not doesn't matter. His mistake was uploading the videos in question to a secondary channel instead of just deleting them or moving them to another platform. And to be honest, the channel name "3D Printing General" alone stopped me from watching his video. Too militaristic, and I had already heard his name in connection with 3D printed guns. Now he calls himself "3D Printing Admiral". So he hasn't changed his militaristic attitude at all.

I just have to put in my two bits and say that I have far, far fewer problems, orders of magnitude less trouble with Linux. If you do nothing more than look at all the KZbin videos about how to "fix" Windows problems, you can see that I am not alone. I am especially amused by the videos that say Windows gets so slow that the best thing to do is just reinstall.

Fun fact: Linux didn't overtake Windows as the most popular operating system, it overtook Symbian (ca 2010). Sybmi-what-ian? That's right. Windows has *never* been the most-installed OS. However Windows is well known, hence the common supposition.

Following the discussion on the Sanjay Mortimer foundation, I looked up what they wrote about him: they disclose his ADHD diagnosis. Then Stefan you talk about procrastination challenges at 45:52, and at the end you both show your fidget toys. So yeah indeed, neurodivergence in general and ADHD in particular are so prevalent in creative and early adopter communities, it's fascinating. Awesome episode as usual ☺️

Curious about which part shocked you? I think they're just stating the obvious - big company with a huge budget comes along, produces a new product that leapfrogs the existing options and has savvy marketing. It's certainly not a new thing, and as mentioned had it not happened we'd not be getting things like input shaping on some of the most popular printers ever made.

@@Rick-vm8bl Believe it or not. There is something other than Bambulab. Personally, these printers do not appeal to me at all. I would choose technically and morally other manufacturers who also act more openly as a Chinese company. Or one with real technical innovations and not just good marketing. I meant Naomi and the dependence also of the two in relation to China. Whereby I find good that they talk about it.

You can't compare Windows vs. Linux and Bamboo vs. FOSS community. Microsoft wasn't built on ripping off FOSS and lying about it. Why would I assume that Bamboo isn't ripping off Clipper, when they lied about Slicer? And I'm no fan of Microsoft. This is not about "enjoying the process" - this is about not being a thief! If Bamboo did publish their Slicer and other GPL based SW up front, there would be nothing to complain about. Having nice UI and product integration is not in contradiction with following Open Source licenses. This is a false dichotomy! Guess what, macOS, iOS ... all of Apple's Darwin system are based on FOSS and guess what - Apple is respecting the licences and releasing to the public the appropriate parts of the code. I grant you that we have no concrete proof, that Bamboo did steal not only the slicer, but firmware too. So I am making an assumption here. But this comparison is ... uneducated at best.
@Rick-vm8bl

FWIW the bambu printers have been rooted (happened quite a while back, its method is just intentionally kept fairly secretive to prevent Bambu patching it. It's not using Klipper. Thats not to say its not using parts from it, but it is their own slicer which looks to have a lot of custom stuff mixed in with stuff that has been heavily inspired by most of the opensource slicers. One day it'll be released. Not by Bambu, but by one of the few hundred people that currently have full root access. A group is currently reverse engineering the firmware for the X1 and plan on releasing it next year I believe, along with a non-reversable root patch for the printers. They just need to finish getting it to a point where Bambu cant patch it out.
@Stuchlej
@Stuchlej Жыл бұрын
@@Rick-vm8bl no, it is not “their own slicer” (and come on, this is not even a disputed fact). Look at the source code. They intentionally purged git history, but you can see folders containing AGPL/GPL code. If you use GPL code, you are OBLIGATED to publish the work built upon it UP FRONT. Not after getting caught red handed, because you have forgot to properly “find and replace” all occurrences of “Prusa Slicer” and Slic3r from your distribution binary. I’m not that deep in binary analysis, so I will give you benefit of the doubt regarding the firmware in the SoC of the printer. However, even if you use a component of a GPL code, you have to publish (at least the related part of) the code base. Which Bambo proved they won’t do, unless they are ( literally ) exposed.
