Well, everyone asked for Stones. Here it is! Brian Jones makes this song as his muted 12-string riff and secret vocal harmony fill in all the blanks. The man was a genius. Brian drenched his 12-string in reverb for both the intro and outro (Keith’s guitar has extra reverb as well), and I’m assuming he also overdubbed the sliding riff for the intro on a 6-string guitar. What’s particularly fascinating is that Brian’s intro/chorus chords all feature a bass note that isn’t the root - in the intro riff, you can clearly hear he plays a G note slide over the C. Similarly, the resounding chords in the chorus are Brian hammering D/A, C/G, and back to his muted country G riff. It’s almost like he invented the reverse power chord! I believe Brian also did an additional overdub on the record playing regular barre chords up the neck for extra power (you can see him playing this live).
Keith’s part is also fantastic, with loose country harmonies panned hard stereo and hilariously loud. Both his and Mick’s part is always a slight “beat” before it should be - it took me forever to figure this out, but listen to the isolated Stones record ( • Video ) and you’ll hear Keith sings “because I USED” before the downbeat, as well as the “but, it’s all OV-ER” - it creates fantastic tension. I was struggling to figure out these harmonies because I had all the notes right, but the rhythm that the Stones threw in really makes the entire song special.
Brian does sing on this track - he has a barely audible harmony that is only two notes (B to C) but emphasizes everything Mick/Keith is doing. I might make a short video just about this. Oh, and thanks for putting up with me still croaking out Jagger vocals at 32 years old! I know I’m sharp at times, but maybe that adds to the vibe.
This whole song is a perfect example of The Rolling Stones’ “weaving guitars” style - Keith’s country picking compliments Brian’s more aggressive 12-string perfectly. Also, I’ll say this again - for whatever reason, the intro/outro is drenched in EXCESSIVE 60s reverb, which I tried my best to recreate.
Can’t leave out Charlie (RIP) and Bill. Charlie does a great shuffle rhythm that adds the country feel, and his open hi-hats during the intro (which I doubled up because I felt like it) are echoey and cool. He does some great fills and keeps the hats closed for the most part, letting up slightly before choruses and during the solo/outro. Bill also deserves massive credit, as his repetitive bass line drives the entire song - and he even keeps the rhythm during the solo. I haven’t quite see anyone on KZbin play it correctly - everyone repeats the B note in the riff, but if you watch the TAMI show version and slow it down (like I did) you can see he clearly moves to the A string - totally open, as a filler note. BTW, Macca does this too. :)
I added my own guitar solo. In my personal opinion, these bands in the 60s all did take after take that were never quite the same, and Keith was likely just rolling out blues riffs he knew each time. I don’t want to copy what the guy did note for note - solos are more fun to express your own style! I think Keith would agree with me.
For anyone that still reads this far….I held off on doing this for years, but this felt like the old days - one take, one day, upload the video to KZbin. I also lost 50 pounds and I can fit into my old clothes again, so maybe I felt nostalgic for the old days. Oh, and I also got braces to fix a long standing jaw problem.

Just awesome Nick! One of my favorite Stones songs. You nail both Brian and Keith’s part. A great two guitar part song. Thanks for dedicating it to Brian Jones. He’s gone but not forgotten. That 12 string Dan you have sounds great.

Nice job! Always cool to see Beatles cover channels branching out a bit, despite non-Beatles covers generally getting less views

Brian Jones WAS the Stones. He'll never get enough recognition. And there's something fishy about his death but we'll probably never know the real truth about it.

This absolutely "cooks". The 12 string Dano sounds incredible. As does the Tele. The violin bass simply sublime. One thing though, for the true Keef authenticity you should have removed the bottom E string from the Tele. Cheers from the Land Down Under.

Thanks! Not to correct you, but I don't think Keith started doing that until later. Also, that 5-string tuning is open G (essentially), so it wouldn't work for Keith's picking part here.

Paul McCartney was right, the Stones are just a cover band. I just heard the original by The Valentinos and you can hear how Mick is trying so so hard to sound like a black man in the Stones cover version. Not only are they a cover band of songs they are a cover band of style and culture.

What are you talking? Every 60's band, including the beatles, started doing covers (Twist and Shout, Roll Over Beethoven, Mr. Moonlight, A Taste of Honey, etc) John copied the way Buddy Holly sing his songs. The difference here is the beatles developed their own sound early in the sixties, the Stones didn't. That's why the the beatles were so different, they were the first boy band hitting the charts, they were a pop band meanwhile the Stones were a blues band.

@@MDARIO2006 -"John copied the way Buddy Holly sing his songs" John actually, in my opinion, copied the way Arthur Alexander sang his songs.
