It's amazing to see a puddle of stainless steel with a camera that blocks out all light.

This is a dream! I believe that soon this processed view of the puddle without the arc light is what we'll see inside the helmet. It's so great! I constantly struggle to NOT look at the arc. The arc attracts the eye but it's not what you need to see. If this was only ever used for instructional work it would be worth it. That is the best view of the TIG action I've ever seen, maybe the best possible!

I am in Gainesville, FL by the way. I sometimes teach "shop" topics to Engineering students. Welding is not the only topic but it's very popular. Videos with good "arc shots" really help. They helped me! I learned about welding by reading, but this has limits. When the helmet comes down, what am I supposed to see and hear? KZbin really came in at this point in my life.

This video is almost TOO GOOD, since you can't see this view yourself. I think it's tremendously educational. I have seen similar images in super high-speed video of welding (say from the CCWJ series). In some of these the image is not illuminated BY the arc! There is a laser synchronized to the camera I think, extremely brilliant pulsed light. I think something like that is happening here? The arc plume is just a little shadow. It doesn't go away, it's just not very bright compared to the illumination from the camera. This is the first video I've ever seen that clearly showed the tip of the tungsten as being white hot at the very end, and some other things we never see. It might be that this is the best possible arc shot! Ah, does this camera cost as much as a car? A house? The only ones I've ever seen personally were something for the University to buy. This seems like the way forward for welding education and research.

I just looked at the CAVITAR welding camera with integrated laser illuminator. PRICE? Ask for a quote! This is never a good sign. There are other welding cameras, but so far I haven't seen one that has its own light, which might be the secret. BUT high-speed welding cameras are now under $10,000 now, some under 5K, which is surprising. Super high speed pictures of arc welding and MIG welding are AMAZING. The Canadian Center for Welding and Joining has great video of pulsed MIG welding with the single-drop transfer. So smooth and neat! THEN you see the same kind of video of STICK welding and it's an ungodly mess, hot metal and glass going everywhere... super educational.
