I've read a research paper on aircraft noise, the A380 is more than 3db quieter than the B787 during cruising, and approx 2db quieter than the next quiet aircraft the A330. The A380 is the only aircraft which I can fall asleep after boarding, unaware of taxiing and take off, and in deep sleep until it is hours into the flight. I will always prefer airlines that operate the A380 where possible.

You're doing an entire series on A380 flights? That's awesome!! I've flown on A380s 4 times so far. I flew on this exact same plane from MUC to JFK last September, also in the upper deck (98K). It was by far my best economy experience to date. Although the hard product was a bit dated, especially the IFE, the service was incredible, offering hot towels on multiple occasions during the flight and being absolutely attentive all the time. I didn’t really expect much from Lufthansa but they really delivered!

In July 1999 I flew Virgin Atlantic - LAX to LHR in standard economy on a 747-400 [Tubular Belle]. The seat was quite narrow and cramped, but the IFE, hot towel, *huge* amenity bag, and huge meal [served with a short bottle of wine!] was amazing. The amenity bag was a small backpack filled with more goodies than I've ever seen before. The IFE even had video games on it [I played Mario Kart for hours], plus tons of documentaries, movies, and TV shows. This was in 1999, so whenever I watch economy class videos, I always compare them to that amazing flight. Two months later I did another 747-400 flight from LAX to LHR, but via British Airways, and there was no IFE, a very cheap meal service [did I mention the VA food was served with actual silverware and was just an amazing meal?], and felt very "economy". I don't know what VA is up to these days, but back in '99 their economy soft product felt like business or first class; they just needed seats with a bit more leg room and width!

I had the chance of flying on the little upper deck economy cabin in the BA 380 in 2017, and never again economy class has been the same for me. The comfort was unparalleled with that bin next to me. But as a noise and vibration engineer, what blew my mind the most was the silence in the cabin, worlds apart from the older gen 737/320s and only close to the new gen A220s when sitting in front of the engines. Happy to see that LH are bringing the hot towel service in long-haul! They used to have it pre-pandemic but it’s basically the first thing in the service they removed.

They will only fly a few more years for LH, so i doubt they get another cabin refresh. LH wanted to replace them with the 777X much earlier, but Boeing ist taking it's time. LH also ordered 10 A350-1000 last year, which could replace the A380 on routes where they can't fully fill the seats without meaningful discounts.
@CoSmicGoesRacing7 ай бұрын
@@Psi-Stormthe cabin refresh is only happening with the business class seats on all 8 A380s. according to Lufthansa, they are refurbishing the Business Class section with the Thompson Vantage Aero XL seats… which are already used on the 4 A350-900s they bought from Philippine Airlines. The A380 Business Class refurbishment is underway and it will roll out by next year. (Lufthansa already sent two A380s to Manila for heavy maintenance checks. D-AIMA and D-AIMB) Lufthansa intends to fly its A380s until 2030 at least, which isn’t far off from the estimated times when Qantas and Etihad would retire theirs. The Airbus A380 was my first introduction to personal entertainment systems when I first flew it via Qantas in September 2011 (I remember it was springtime Down Under when we arrived) from LAX to Sydney, Australia. Before then, my last international flight was with my family on a Northwest Airlines Boeing 747-400 in June 1994 from Tokyo-Narita to Honolulu, and then from Honolulu to Seattle-Tacoma, back when that plane was brand new. And the entertainment systems we had then were these overhead television screens for the masses -I think they inserted VHS tapes into those. Also an innovation in those days.

I am SUPER excited to see your LH MUC-DEL review! I flew it in the other direction last July with my family while returning to the United States. I must say compared with United's 14 hour Newark-Delhi service, Lufthansa was so so much better in comfort, seats, and food! I don't usually sleep on planes but this time I did and the vegetarian food was actually filling and good! On the other hand, United served us a single banana for breakfast. There is a reason why a lot of Indian Americans connect in Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich while traveling from US to India and vice versa in addition to other European cities and the Middle East. Almost 100 of nearly 300 passengers on the flight were connecting onto US bound flights, with significant amount of Canadian and British passengers as well (same story for my LH DEL-FRA and Swiss ZRH-DEL). I hope Austrian starts service from Vienna to Delhi so that it can also become a great connection point from US to India.

One of the problems with A380 is that it requires a minimum of 3000m runaway length(the same issue applies to the 747-8) This would mean in practice that some airports would need to extend their runaways in order to be able to operate the A380. The inability to operate on a number of airports as they are, plus the fact that it is hard to find routes that would constantly fill an A380 throughout the year.
@FalconX888 ай бұрын
There are more than enough airports that can accommodate the A380 and many are even pretty slot restricted. The problem is getting them full but there are several big cities you can connect where this does work. The fact that are still that many flying shows you that despite the push to point to point there are still enough fat routes that require big planes.
@cristianboldisor11757 ай бұрын
@@FalconX88 To be honest there are routes where you will always have enough passengers to fill in an A380.On almost any flight I took between Europe and North America (US and even Canada), the plane was jammed packed even in the off season period. But the thing is that a company will have to buy an aircraft specifically for these routes which they do not seem to be willing to. Also for Airbus I imagine they have to have a minimum volume of orders in order to keep an aircraft model in production. If they only get one order in a blue moon they will drop the model all together(and I guess this is one of the reasons why A380 has been discontinued).The fact that the "hub and spoke" model that Airbus thought back in the days it will become dominant, was not actually a such a great success also played a role(the direct "point to point" model had far more success than the 2 or more legs flights via a hub).

Very comfortable aircraft also, umm....its nice that Lufthansa has made some changes to their meal service and customer service is also on point. I will have to complain about the economy class product starting with the IFE that makes me think of the now outdated IFE system Emirates had on their A340 around 11 years ago and even they have moved on and modernised their product, of course Emirates has retired their A330/A340 a while back now. The seats could use a revamp/refresh also, of course people will say that I'm not being fair comparing Lufthansa to an accomplished world class Airline like Emirates, ok what about Condor then, Even on Condor's now retired B767 the IFE was much nicer, I might not have flown on Condor recently, but during my time working with the company handling agent, I have got the chance to check out Condor's cabin, even if it is brief moment. As for Singapore, their remaining A380s are busy flying to the US which is an important market for LH. I don’t see them returning to Singapore with A380s. Plus, they’re flying the next biggest type they have, the 747-8i. Love from Singapore ❤️

Lufthansa A340 has universal power outlets and modern entertainment systems without that stupid box. I flew from IAD to MUC yesterday on one of their A340's in economy, experience was excellent

Yes, but they will not change it anymore in the A380, as this is only a temporary solution.
