I remember Sega Rally, a nice game. I was a games coder in the 90s and my boss had a GT-4. Nice car. We were all into our JDM cars and fast VWs back then. Another boss had a 3000 GT, a friend and I had MR2s. The coder with the VW scirocco VR6 got a lot of respect, it felt so fast back then with all that torque. I went on to briefly work on a couple of racing games for another company, NewmanHass racing mostly and briefly did some work on F1-2000.

@@MrTimcakes Back end graphics debugging, getting it to work on different platforms. We had problems with Direct X and it not working on all graphics cards. The graphics engine was done by another company, not easy to debug someone else's code! I also did the install software. Also an experimental 3d particle system for rain, but that never got used in the end, as often happens in game dev. The NewmanHass engine went on to be used in f-2000 but I left just as they started that to work on a Lego game. Exciting time to work in games back then, so much happening with 3d being new. Before that, I did some work on consoles and spent a year making an in-house Windows-based tool to let the game designers design worlds in 3D. I also got chosen to be the first coder at our company to code the PS1. This was before the PS was out and was one of the few prototypes in existence. I had to learn C as before that we were coding games in assembly. In my early days I did a 3D game for the Acorn Archimedes in ARM code in the early 90s called Chopper Force. Now working on coding tools (not game-related).

Special Reserve 👍 Not heard that name for a few years. Sawbridgeworth, Herts. I think I even visited their shop there once. Bought lots of Commodore 64 and Amiga stuff from them probably including Sega Rally. Later I had a friend who’s company had both the arcade versions so lots of free plays, they are rare now as the chips fail.

Awesome mate, I got to drive a friends new GT-Four Group A rally years ago, it was the first turbo and first AWD car I had ever driven and drove it hard( at the owners direction) it was the most eye opening event in my automotive history. Six months ago I purchased one( in about the same condition as yours, maybe worse. its in a mate's workshop being completely torn down and rebuilt by an ex-TRD mechanic, still haven't worked out what the missus will say when I eventually tell her. If your ever in Australia, you can come drive mine ;)

I had a look at one of these in red. Truly lovely looking car, 130k, full Toyota service history and had the big wing. The Toyota service history was a massive draw. The folder was about 3" thick with receipts for new Turbo, differentials front and back engine rebuildetc put it this way it had had a hard life but had been serviced and rebuilt by Toyota. Had a look around checking all the things you should check and found a dirty great oil leak from the transmission. Checked the history again and this was the only thing which hadn't been rebuilt? Took the car for a drive, felt very tight and nice to drive but the gearbox was very graunchy. The transmission needed a rebuild. Returning to the sales room the dealer wasn't going to budge with the price as it was rock bottom. That was that ,I walked away pretty glum as it was a car I'd spent my childhood playing on the sega. Another car popped up. The Clio Williams! One test drive and I was hooked! Much lighter and nimble with a very torquey engine I was sold and never looked back as I still have it today!! Oh, I met the next owner of the celtics to find he had spent the best part of £800 on the transmission and the Bill's were still climbing. I still hanker over these but I love little Clio!!

I guess maybe for those who can afford multiple st205s. For me, having my 95 gt-four relives the time when I had my my ST165 and the fun I had driving it, modifying it and making it unique for me. I've always admired the Celica, mainly for its rallying ability. The Twin Cam Turbo was fantastic, and the GT-4 was even better. One highlight of my very minor amateur rallying 'career' was in the mid 1980s on the Safari. I was driving close-support for a privateer team (a couple of expat mates) loaded with 14 spare wheels, tyres, and a load of suspension parts, and finding the going pretty rough on a dry dirt track. We were doing no more than 15mph, dodging potholes and rocks, when one of the works Group-B Celicas came past at what must have been close to 100. Flippin' 'eck. It took 5 minutes for the dust to clear. The Toyotas just FLEW over the rough stuff. They were insanely tough. The secret to covering really bad roads really quickly was, to quote local rally maestro Rob Collinge, "Always to keep the weight on the wheel that's in the air..." 😁

Wonderful cars. I've owned my ST165('88 GT-Four) for over six years at this point. There were times where I had to daily my rally rocket and she did wonderfully. Performed as well in winter as you would expect, even better than my current daily driven RAV4. She needs a bit of TLC at the moment but otherwise it's been a great experience. With a new fuel pump and some work on the brakes I'd feel confident enough to drive her anywhere.

So they came standard with the high rise rear wing and interestingly a water spray system that was disconnected on delivery but which I had my mechanic mate hook up for me. Should never have sold it.

Glad you found a set of fog lights for it. One of the many cars I've owned and sold and now wish I still had. If you want a cheap way of lifting the interior, mk7 leather seats are an easy upgrade, I got black/ dark grey leather ones for mine for less than 200 quid although my car didn't have the recaro's so you may want to keep them. I posted a "how to" guide on the gt four owners club at the time if you're interested. It looks great in white, id love the 430 you just bought but im realistic enough to know thats out of my reach, but the Toyota is different, having had one and sold it on for very little money im annoyed at myself for not holding on to it. Hind sight and all that. You enjoy yours james

Why are 90's JDM car reviews so much more interesting than any other cars? They really are.

One of the first if not the first Japanese turbo car I got chance to drive. Standout memory was the pace through the gears and also the weight. The suspension in the car I was driving had probably seen better days given how it would crash through drains and pop holes on UK roads. The extra resistance from the 4wd as a daily through town put me off at the time too. No doubt this model is very special, there can't be many in roadworthy shape today that are not garage queens.
