The longest running and most loved play along series is back, and after such a long time away, my brain really could have done without some of the perplexing rounds that were thrown at me..
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to KZbin to watch
my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!

It does help with engagement. You don’t want people who like Geoguessr skipping the adventure videos and vice versa. The algorithm rewards channels with videos which are watched start to finish.

I think splitting up the channel between geoguessr and adventure videos is a mistake. Your most popular video ever uploaded is a geoguessr video (and there's a bunch in the top ten). I think even your newer followers understand geoguessr is part of your roots and having content in between adventure videos is a good thing, even if it's not for everyone. Trying to convince ~half your subs to move to a new channel just for geoguessr content might not be easy. Just my two cents.

Agreed, every time a KZbinr branches into different content they always feel compelled to create a second channel for it because they get worried about the algorithm or what not, which inevitably kills their momentum on both channels and they end up regretting it and/or abandoning one of them, seen it happen so many times. Maybe if you're a huge content farm it could make sense, but where Tom's at it doesn't make sense at all when all types of videos do really well, Geoguessr, adventuring and the quiz stuff like Sporcle (where one is currently 5th top most viewed).
@mattgopack7395
@mattgopack7395 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah - if anything, geoguessr feels like it'd be better main channel content from a purely analytics perspective (easier to consistently put out there, and easy to get into). An adventures/expeditions only channel would likely suffer from having inconsistent videos - a few weeks in a row of content, then nothing for a while, then back. That said, I could also see this channel being more limited on geoguessr content or on the geoguessr-like content (something like 1-2 videos a week, consistently) and then having any additional ones he records/does or that are more 'boring' videos could go on a second channel.
@kyzyl4915
@kyzyl4915 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. And if he decided to split it up anyways, it would make more sense to keep the geoguesser content here and move the adventures stuff to a different channel. Not the other way around. I like both but the geoguesser content is my favorite, followed by straight line missions and then the other adventure type stuff. Not a huge fan of geo detective except for when it’s a modern photo sent in by a fan. But personally, I think he should keep it all here and just try to do more geoguesser content in addition to everything else
@jessali_
@jessali_ 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I'd prefer it if the content all stayed on the same channel. It's all geography-related anyway. The algorithm knows I enjoy geography and it works very much in Tom's favor for me. I always see his videos in my recommended on the right side as soon as he uploads. Don't even need to check my subscriptions.

@@MarionAntoine Permafrost means that ground is filled with small crystals of ice. So in summer when some of those crystals melt soil shrinks and expands again in winter when they are frozen again. so solid foundation will just crack. because of that they use stilts that can move instead of fully stable foundation. and stilts need some free space between building and ground to be able to move. beacause of that first floor is always elevated.
@NewBuildmini
@NewBuildmini 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarionAntoine Exactly. My geography teacher said that if the buildings were built as if they were in the South, they would eventually sink into the ground. Elevating the building slightly prevents the air under the buildings from melting the ice which would have otherwise sunk it.

The Olive street thing isn't as much of a coincidence as it might seem. America has never been particularly creative with place names, and plant-based neighbourhoods are common all over the world. Some states have literally hundreds of Olive streets, many of them in major cities. Due to the grid-based system used in American city planning, the odds of any city having a junction called 12th and Olive is very high.

exactly what i came down to the comments to say. you don't even have to get that obscure to see it. we have 2 major places named Washington, there's a well-known Portland on each coast, over half of our states have a Springfield, even more states have a Riverside... and pretty much every town with more than like 20 streets has one named after a tree. usually Oak, but i wouldn't be surprised if nearly every state had more than one Olive street within it. and there are DEFINITELY at least a few more places with an Olive street intersecting a 12th and 13th street. a personal anecdote just to further prove my point... i was guessing that it was probably somewhere more east, like South Carolina or Pennsylvania (until i realized that the buildings and streets were nowhere near old enough to be the east coast, but that's beside the point). well apparently the actual location is about 3 a hour drive from where i live. i didn't even think it could be my own state, that's how many of every common name there are in this country. it's pretty mental, but even U.S. residents forget just how bloody massive our country is, especially compared to the *MUCH* smaller European countries. just to put in in perspective for our non-U.S. friends, a day trip for us can include a 4-5 hour drive ONE WAY, depending on when you are able to wake up. and many of us go on days- or weeks-long roadtrips where we *NEVER* *LEAVE* *THE* *COUNTRY* . it's bonkers.

I love Tom’s content so much, he’s like my comfort KZbinr, I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched the identifying African countries without borders video. I honestly am extremely excited every week for new videos. But hearing he likes Jordan Peterson sours it for me. Before anyone says “you can’t not like someone because they have a different option, if you disagree with his beliefs you’re not tolerant” no, Jordan Peterson is quite literally very sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and fatphobic, he publicly fatshames women as we all saw this week. It’s not just a “difference of opinion.” I don’t know why Tom would like him. It truly scares me thinking that Tom supports someone who so strongly objects to human rights for minorities.

Disappointed to hear you're a fan of Jordan Peterson (if you weren't kidding). Before anyone starts to bang on about cancel culture, I don't think JP should be cancelled or suppressed or whatever - in fact I think he's over the hill anyway - but this is a grown man who feels the need (among other things) to go on twitter over a magazine cover's "authoritarian" agenda to promote less toxic beauty standards and then quits twitter because he's facing backlash. Wouldn't mind some of his "life advice" from back in the day taken out of context, but what's really jarring is this posing as an innnovative thinker when really all he seems to be is an enormously insecure person who cobbles together a close-minded world view from various academic disciplines he doesn't bother fully looking into. I watch this channel because of the amazing and varied content and because Tom seems like such a genuinely nice bloke who shares his enthusiasm for the world we all find ourselves in together. Tom has his life together massively, despite having to fight some very difficult and dark problems in his past. Besides the Twitter tirades, JP gives some great life advice for sorting out your life, fixing relationships with your family, quitting drugs, having a career and finding meaning in spite of how difficult life can be, and the majority of his fans are fans for that reason. I think that's probably why Tom likes him. So glad the play-alongs are back, Tom! I recently played 1-23 and have been itching to have another crack at besting you. Regarding your channels, if you are open to my opinion as a viewer, I would keep the mixed content here on one channel (unless splitting it benefits you tangibly). I found your content when the How Not to Travel Europe series was posted on reddit, and started playing geoguessr because of the other videos I hungrily consumed from the channel! I love both styles of content equally, and if they had been separate I might have never found my passion for playing geoguessr. But regardless, whatever decision you make I'll be subscribing and following! Cheers Tom, all the best. EDIT (spoilers): Great rounds today. Round 1: I went for Irkutsk based on the cars as well, on the southeast side of town, ended up just beating Tom by 9 points with a 1334. Round 2: Very similar thought process as Tom (Go BVB!), ended up in Innsbruck based on the river angle and the other clues, but just wasn't confident enough to really take my time and get a perfect score, ended up 1500m away and dropped 5 points for a 4995. Round 3: This round was actually round 4 for the #14 Urban World play-along video (you might remember Tom's brilliant American accent). I had just played along with this one last month so I have to admit I knew where to go! Perfect score as a result. Round 4: Not a clue what REX stands for. The houses gave me a clue it was the South, probably coastal, thought maybe NOLA, but I ended up in Fayetteville, NC based on tram lines being also found in that city. I had a very similar reaction as Tom. I just didn't zoom in enough on NOLA to really see the lines, and I should've trusted my compass a bit more. A brutal 2138 for this one, but oh well that's what I get for doubting my gut and then being a little too laissez faire with the guesswork. Round 5: Lots of obvious clues once I looked around, but the Brisbane truck was a fun little red herring for me as well! Managed to get within 3m and snag a perfect score. TOTAL: 18467 Looking forward to the next one, Tom! EDIT EDIT: per wikipedia, "Rex (founded 1872) is a New Orleans Carnival Krewe which stages one of the city's most celebrated parades on Mardi Gras Day. Rex is Latin for "King", and Rex reigns as "The King of Carnival".

Yeah, out of nowhere! I hope it's just ignorance, not a genuine liking...

From a surface level, Peterson seems reasonable enough. Not everyone dives deeper to see how paranoid and misguided that man really is.

Those second and third rounds really threw me off. I expected the Alps round to be in Italy based on how close the mountains were but I was clearly wrong and as an American I thought that was Denver as well and found those exact streets you found. Absolutely hilarious that a completely different city has the exact same streets lol

out of interest: what made you think that mountains being that close would specifically mean Italy? I mean Austria is like 95% alps so you get views like this almost everywhere in the country. Same goes for Switzerland. The south of Germany also has a few bigger places right next to mountains. Maybe it's just me because I am from that region but reading Italy being the first association with that landscape for someone kinda surprises me, haha

@@_coffeebean_ I'm honestly not sure it was just what my gut was telling me lmao. I've visited Italy before and that looked like exactly where I stayed and I guess I assumed this was a small town right next to the mountains

@@timlett99 ok I can understand that. As an European, I can see myself making similar assumptions with US landscapes

That third round was pretty cool, since I live near Eugene and I visit there regularly. I recognized it immediately

18:16 as someone who lived for a long time in the PNW, I was certain as soon as I saw it that it must be Washington or Oregon... When you zoomed into Denver I thought oh well he'll look around then leave, but then you found the streets so I was forced to rethink my guess! But no! I was avenged haha
