The most unexpected catch off a small roadside beach in Indonesia. These village kids saw me walking on the beach and started following me. It really does take good technique to land monsters like that on light tackle. I was able to land a 20+ (30 by some estimates) lb striped bass in a small creek on 6 pound main line with a 4 pound leader while fishing for bluegills in freshwater...... it never jumped, but it sure took me for a ride. As soon as i saw it i couldn't believe what i saw happen.

@@kojikuza4661 i keep it relatively loose. If the drag is too tight, the line is much more likely to break on any of the runs. One thing that i think kept it from jumping and increasing the pressure on the fish to slow it down was keeping the rod low, but at an angle. It's a tip i picked up from an old book i had as a kid. It was definitely the right call in a small, slow moving creek where i cant chase after it due to all the trees along the steep bank. On top of it all, the light wire hook never bent out of shape and came out relatively easy once there was slack to remove the hook. It was a size 6 Aberdeen hook frome a bulk pack. If i had the drag all the way down, not only would the line have likely (almost definitely) broke, but the hook would have straightened out as well since that has often happened on me if i snagged on something and the line didn't break. In fact, i had the drag so loose that i most definitely caused a bunch of line twist or did some damage to the drag gears (reeling in while the drag is peeling a little) but i was scared stiff that if i tightened the drag by even a little, I would lose the fish.

@@kojikuza4661 the key when you have the rod low is to not point the tip at the fish. If the rod tip is pointing towards the fish, it has to be up to maintain tension. When you have the rod tip low, hold it to like a 90 degree angle away from you and play it out as normal, as always when fighting a fish, maintaining tension is key and the rod is the only thing that can bring it in when the line cant on its own.
