23:51 The French military post World War II used a lot of German equipment especially for their colonial troops. They even had an entire armored regiment made up of German panther tanks for about 3 years until they could rebuild their arms industry.

French used a lot of ex-wehrmacht weapons post war (including panther tanks) and although by the time of Vietnam the French mainly used US and French equipment, some german stuff was also floating around. later whent he soviets suppourted vietnam against the US, Russia sent large stocks of old captured german firearms and artillery to the vietnamese, including MG34s and MP40s

The thing about Vietnam is that it has quite a history. The first principle is that when your area is mostly a jungle, you fight on the defensive. Another thing is that they are a regional power, and they have taken on four superpowers and emerge victorious (France, Japan, US, China).

Halfly disagree, Vietnam success in fighting was not done alone, but the immense weapon and food supply flow from China and from Soviet Union, thus vietnamese can keep on fighting with seemingly infinite supply. They were such good allies. It is shame that after China-Soviet break, Vietnam is sacrificed as a chess between China and Soviet Union. Where China has to invade its former friend just to humiliate Soviet Union. There were so much chinese food and weapons in Vietnam that time.

Oh man, 7554. Janky to play but it made headlines in national news. Recently it is starting to show up in videos made by enthusiasts of obscure FPS games, and I'm glad for that. The Vietnamese developers (Hiker Games, formerly Emobi Games at the time they made 7554) planned for a sequel, 300475, in which you fight against American forces. The project was crowd-sourced but sadly they could not gather enough, so the project was scrapped.

While this game is just a discounted version of CoD WaW in everyway, it still a a breath of fresh air. I mean the 1st Indochina war are mostly forgotten by the much bigger Vietnam war hence you can easily find a game about Vietnam war, but I can't name another game take place in the 1st Indochina war. The fact that a company in Vietnam managed to make a somewhat decent single play game that take place in our historical period instead of "another Wuxia Pay2Win", and while the game isn't good, it was made with passion, something that lack in the "so-called" AAA game (look at you, Vanguard, V, ...). Now day you can get this game for free in every May 7th, the historical moment when the "unbreakable fortress" broke, hence the name of the game, 7554 (May 7th, 1954 we Vietnamese write day before month) (Also, if you know Vietnamese, the voice actor did an outstanding good job, something that Vietnamese dub for anime or film still struggle to do)

Every battle in which they are practically surveyed by the history experts in our country, the developer is very passionate about this project. A few facts I'd like to share. This game was released in 2011 and was made with $725.000 budget. It used to be cost at roughly $20 for a standard edition DVD copy and digital (not so sure about other edition which contain artworks and exclusive physical items). Despite all that efforts, the game was a revenue failure, only reached $42650. A lot of people blamed for piracy, there was even a picture of a conversation showed a Vietnamese asking a Chinese cracker for a pirated version of this game. Even though the game is indeed bad all and all compared to other games, it was considered to be the first Vietnamese AAA game ever made.

Before the Vietnamese People's Army, there was the National Guards of Vietnam, whose exploits in the fight for the cities were usually forgotten even in Vietnam itself due to the more bombastic campaigns of the second half of the war. While this game did portray a portion of the Battle of Hanoi (1946). There was a real sense of hopelessness in those years when city after city falls to the enemy and I feel that failing to portray the losing war with all the ordinary people taking up arms for the first time to defend their new country made the road to victory in the grand counter-offensives lacking its emotional impact. This is just a bit of personal musing from a Vietnamese perspective

During the vietnam war, the US bombing campaign represented at least three times as much (by weight) as both European and Pacific theater World War II bombing combined, and about fifteen times total tonnage in the Korean War. Given the prewar Vietnamese population of approximately 32 million, U.S. bombing translates into hundreds of kilograms of explosives per capita during the conflict. U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft expended another 1,500,000 tons in Southeast Asia. This tonnage far exceeded that expended in World War II and in the Korean War. The U.S. Air Force consumed 2,150,000 tons of munitions in World War II - 1,613,000 tons in the European Theater and 537,000 tons in the Pacific Theater - and 454,000 tons in the Korean War. For another comparison, the atomic bombs dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had the power of roughly 15,000 and 20,000 tons of TNT, respectively (Grolier 1995). Since general purpose bombs - by far the most common type of bomb used in Vietnam and in our dataset - are approximately 50% explosive material by weight, each atomic bomb translates into roughly 30,000 to 40,000 tons of such munitions. Measured this way, U.S. bombing in Indochina represents 100 times the combined impact of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. During the vietnam war, despite 2.2 million troops mobilisation and overwhleming firepower, the US dropped its goal to conquer vietnam in 1975, the American public had grown tired of the loss of American lives and of the war itself, meaning that there’s was no way that U.S. military involvement in the region could continue. During the Vietnam War, thousands of U.S. aircraft were lost to antiaircraft artillery (AAA), surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), and fighter interceptors (MiG)s. In total, the United States military lost in Vietnam almost 10,000 aircraft, helicopters and UAVs, including supersonic bombers. The Republic of Vietnam lost 1,018 aircraft and helicopters from January 1964 to September 1973. The U.S. Air Force flew 5.25 million sorties over South Vietnam, North Vietnam, northern and southern Laos, and Cambodia. The United States Air Force dropped in Indochina, from 1964 to August 15, 1973, a total of. 6,162,000 tons of bombs and other ordnance. In Laos alone, the US dropped more than 270 million bombs during its war in Vietnam that spilled to other surrounding nations in attempt to cut supply and life into Vietnam. An estimated 30% of the bombs remain unexploded and are scattered across the country.

Vietcong & NVA were most successful when they fought "invisible" for enemy. When Americans couldn't see them in the jungle. In open battles - especially in street fighting - Vietnamese were mostly doomed to failure because of enormous US advantage in firepower.

Fun Fact the reason there is an MP40 is because a lot of Non-Nazi German Veterans from WW2 joined the French Foreign Legion and fought in Indochina. Probably depicted the fact that the MP40 was so much in surplus that German Vets preferred it.

The Viet Minh did actually employ former japanese POWs. As advisors and trainers mostly. These japanese were considered part of the vietnamese forces and NOT POWs of france by ho chi minh which is why one round of peace negotiations broke down when the french demanded he hand them over into their custody. The US, Soviets and chinese all offered some sort of assistance in the war against the french as well

in the timestamp in 23:38, As a Historian, let me explain why the French got the MP40 - is because, in 1954, the French have gotten many captured large pieces of German equipment being left behind in France, and the French-made exploits of advanced German pieces of equipment for their soldiers, which also includes MG42 and STG44, yes, you heard me right, MG42 and STG44 used by France after WW2.

Not only that, we also used C96, japanese weapons, french made p38 and so on. The french industry was very bad after the war so we used what we can find, some soldiers have even been issued ww1 Lebel and hotchkiss guns, and all that also explain why this war was lost at the beginning. Too many different ammo. I used to have in my collection french made C96 bullets, StG 44 and 7.7 arisaka, it gives you a good idea of how messy logistic was

@@spicy5630 let me add up too, both the Vietnamese and French adopted Soviet weapons in the early phases of the Vietnam war since the North (through China) were supplied by Soviet lines and disciplined by Soviet logistics officers, and other slain Vietnamese soldiers armed with soviet arms and confiscated Soviet tactics and doctrines also landed to the French in the 1950s.

A game where you play as Vietnamese character throughout war era Vietnamese history (1946-1979) would be amazing. The end missions would include the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia to defeat Pol Pot. I feel like that would drive home the idea and importance of acknowledging vietnam as a very victimized country as well as one that fights back against injustice. COD could make so many cool games but keep doing overused settings like WW2. Im interested in what others think about that idea for a game.
