so near the end u say that the domino theory was proved wrong because communism didnt spread to the rest of south east asia which i find confusing because i seem to recall both Laos and Cambodia becoming communist, and that Laos like Vietnam is still ideologically communist today

My grandpa is now 90. He's a Vietnamese. He fought the French since he was 13, then the Japanese when he was 15. He later on joined Viet Cong to fight the Americans. He was captured twice, brutally tortured (which resulted in 10 missing teeth and a bullet in his shoulders; the shrapnel still remains inside his body). He was released when the war ended, happily marched into the city of Saigon. The joy didn't last long. He marched towards the Northern border to fight of Chinese forces in 1979 and later joined the Expeditionary forces in Cambodia to fight Pol Pot. Of course he's now retired. His name is Nguyen Van Dong - alive and well. Three of his sons died during the war, two of them were only 9 and 10 when they died (of a bomb raid which hit their shelter). He grieved as much as anyone would when they lost their love ones. My mother is his 9th child, and also the last child. He kept a lot of medals inside his cabinet in the rural province of Ben Tre. He also kept a picture of me since I have gone studied abroad in Hungary. He said that he survived too many wars, and he hoped that he would also live until the day I returned which is 3 years from now. I love him more than anyone. Update: he's still doing well, just received his 2nd jab. Still one year left to my graduation. Can't wait to see him! Update: he’s doing well, should say he’s now 92. Grandma can’t hear well, so they can’t really talk to each other (without shouting). It’s sad to see how you can see each other, but can’t hear what the other says. I hope there’s a way to fix this. Update: he’s currently undergoing extensive treatment from a stroke he had. It’s not promising ngl. He told me he’s gonna wait until the day I come back… Last update: hi everyone, i hope anyone’s reading this is doing alright. It’s unfortunate to announce that my grandfather passed away yesterday in his sleep on the 30th of January 2023. He’s 93 years old. He couldn’t keep his promise of staying alive until the day i get back. It’s only 5 months left…I’m in a really bad place. I lighted a candle in a church in Vienna, hoping that he can rest in peace, always overlooking me as I grow up. I sincerely thank everyone for their kind comments. I guess this is the end of our story. Additional update: this is a sad update. My grandma also passed away today, on 26th of March, 2024. She’s 90 and had dementia. I’m very sad but also somewhat relieved now that she can reunite with my grandpa, although I love her so so much. I would like to thank everyone again for their lovely wishes. Your attention makes their story so much more meaningful. I hope we can all carry their stories and memories to our heart so that they can forever live within us. With much love, Simon.

Lots of respect to your grandfather! I will repeat what I have already commented under the video: I am from the Czech republic and Vietnamese make up the third largest minority (after Slovaks and Ukrainians) since a lot of them came here to study when Czechoslovakia was still a socialist country and they decided to stay mostly due to the economic reasons. From my point of view they are very pleasant hard-working people adapting to the new enviroment better than the Arabs and Africans in Germany or France. Ho Chi Minh spent years in Western countries like the US, England and France and even in some African countries. He is not a guy that you would assume as being brainwashed but actually effectively fusing different ideologies. In the US he spent a long time observing the black rights movement and got in touch with many black leaders. Abraham Lincoln's ideologies heavily influenced Ho Chi Minh to the point that parts of Lincoln's speech about human rights were referenced in Vietnam Independence Declaration

Of all of the leaders to establish a movement and create a government in modern history, his record and beliefs are the most benevolent in my mind. Uncle was a fair and pragmatic leader who genuinely wanted a great future for EVERYONE in Vietnam. One Vietnam, One People. He spent a lot of time trying to unify the region, not just Vietnam and went to numerous peace talks, trying to court cooperation with the world during his days of exile and travel. The only stains on his record that I am aware of was the injustice enacted on farmers as the economy transitioned to a managed market economy as opposed to a state owned economy such as NK. The growing pains were hard and while not perfect, he is one of the few leaders who never murdered or mutilated his own population in the name of "freedom" or "development."

My mom's ancestor is Hoang Ke Viem, a general under Nguyen Dynasty. He lead people fought against France. Later on, the next generations always joined to fight against invasions. My mom old house used to be a weapon supply for Viet Cong. Her dad and other relatives are all soldiers. It make me feel very proud about myself.

General Westmoreland was confident that the US Armed Forces would win using the strategy of attrition warfare. For every American soldier killed, the US forces would kill 10 VC/NVA. John Paul Vann, top US military advisor in Vietnam, calculated that to win in this fashion, the US of A would have to lose 500,000 dead and it would take 10 years to win. If North Vietnam had gone Total War and the Americans had decided to keep the war going using the same strategy, they would have to kill 5 million VC/NVA in 10 years time.

@@_____..______340 On the contrary..Vietnamese people despise the growing crimes committed by the US Armed Forces, but after all this time, I think that every Vietnam veteran would see a soldier, an American veteran, as a former enemy, but also a companion in the same hell that they both went through..If they Russian/Soviet soldiers who "ran" half of Europe from Stalingrad and conquered Berlin, could shake hands and sympathize with ordinary German soldiers, members of the Wehrmacht (not the Waffen SS, they were beasts) in the early 1990s, and that was a world war, war to the point of extermination (if the Russians had lost, they would have disappeared as a nation!), I think that the veterans of a regional, difficult and tragic, but still regional war - could find understanding for each other. Wars are started by old men in armchairs, politicians, and ended by guys and men in the trenches, on both sides of which there is usually a similar hell during the entire course of the war, only the end is different (for the winner and the defeated)..

The fact of the matter is that US intervention caused untold hardship in both countries you mentioned, just as it did in Chile, Nicaragua, and still does in Colombia, Venezuela, and all parts of the Middle East, and that intervention is strictly for monetary gain, just as it was during the Banana Wars, the Philippines and so on. As a Vietnamese citizen, I'm fully aware of how awful these wars were in regards of their impacts, even in today. Because my dad used to be a soldier fighting Mekong Delta in 1970s, he still made me think about the huge damage that the war gave to him. We all acknowledge that war cannot be the solution, it's just hurting innocent people's lives. These have gone pass but the lessons for today are never outdated to learn. That should be encouraged more for younger ones around the globe.

As a foreigner recently living in Vietnam, I am realising that there is so much about Vietnam propagated in the West that is (perhaps unsurprisingly) one-sided and bias, but has managed to linger in popular culture for so long. Uncovering it myself in-situ has been eye-opening and videos like this help greatly. Kudos to this video for highlighting the century of conflict (indeed millenia considering the Chinese) that Vietnam has endured. Context is everything and so much context is missing from the West's understanding of Vietnam. As an example, the most surprising for me was Vietnam's subsequent fight *against* the Khmer in Cambodia, which was another communist regime. Communism is used so liberally to paint over what are complex situations, so I'm glad this video finished by saying that the underlying motivation of the Vietnamese was that of unification and liberty, adding much-needed context to what is typically seen as a one-dimensional story.

They only clashed because Khmer Rouge believed after Khmer Issarak, and Laos Issarak (freedom fighter rebels) help Vietnam defeated U.S, Ho Chi Minh agenda changed toward the non Vietnamese rebel groups and believed he wanted to unifed Indochina under Vietnam policy ( to fight off their number one enemy China). Khmer Rouge believed Vietnam was setting up puppets / agents in the Khmer Rouge camp to overthrow their party. This lead to slaughtering innocent Cambodian civilans and murdered 4,500 Vietnamese mention in history. Khmer Rouge was close with Viet Minh. They also trained Khmer Rouge until 1970. Pol Pot also relocated majority Khmer population to the countryside after U.S illgeally bombed neutral Cambodia in Ho Chi Minh Trail. ..

US policy was always to give the Philippines their independence and it became law to due so in 1935. The Philippines were a few years from getting their independence when the Japanese invaded. We possessed Cuba too after the Spanish American War and they became independent in 1902.

I still remember my grandma's stories about the war she experienced in the past. It was really horrible. My grandma had many narrow escapes from death. She has an elder brother and she is heartbroken whenever she tells me about him. He died while fighting at Quang Tri Citadel which is called "the meat grinder". He was extremely happy the day he could go and fight for his country. He said that fighting all his heart for his country is worth it even if he could die. I still can't imagine how I would be if I were born at that time

I was once married to a Vietnamese woman and have been to Vietnam 3 times. My observations from being in Vietnam. 1. Every home had a picture of Ho Chi Minh in their house included with their family shrine. When I asked my father in law about it (who didn’t speak a lick of English) answered me in plain English “Ho Chi Minh number one citizen”. 2. Everyone there was equal….equally poor. But happy and drunk, and worked very little. With eating and being drunk with family seemingly being the top priority. My ex wife’s take on the war. Keep in king she was born, educated, and grew up most of her life in South Vietnam. 1. The Vietnamese people had rocks. They used them rocks to take their Guns. They used those guns to take their grenades, and bazookas. Basically the idea that they had nothing and were being bullied by a stronger, richer nation. But they used their cunning and strength to turn the tide. the vietnamese did have guns at the start of the war, but they also did recycle a ton of american munitions to use against them. the raw resourcefulness in their traps was huge. they would take unexploded bombs as well as shrapnel and make makeshift mines. not to mention the classic spike traps. the vietnamese also had more veteran troops than the US. they had finished fighting a war in the same jungle environment recently after all.

As a Vietnamese, my dad always has a funny saying: "The invaders of Vietnam never won, because there was nothing to win in Vietnam!" This is because Vietnam was a very poor and rural country, if there was an invasion, Vietnamese would burn down their straw huts (which are flammable) and run to the South. The invaders never got anything from the invasion. Vietnam were always the underdogs, but they had determination!

Thank you for this. Even as a child growing up in the US, I never understood why the Vietnamese were always portrayed as evil commies when they really had no choice. They wanted freedom. They helped the US in WW2. And then were led back into colonialism when the French came back. They were freedom fighters trying to fight off foreign invaders who wanted to exploit their people and land. The French and US government forced them into the arms of communism.

My grandmother was a VC soldier, participating in the resistance war as a guerilla and intelligent against the US and the Korean Tiger troop in Binh Dinh province. During the day she lived like a normal person, but at night she fought against the American. During the war, My grandmother was pregnant and gave birth to my father in the Jungle. I remembered her telling me that she had to leave my father in the jungle to avoid being detected by American soldiers all night. The next day, when the situation was stable, she brought my father back, fortunately he was fine. My grandfather at that time, was a medical soldier of the North vietnamese army, was mobilized to the South right before the birth of my father, so he was born without knowing who his father was, and my grandmother did not reveal this to my father, because she was afraid that my father might accidentally tell others and suspect that she was a Viet Cong. Therefore, my father grew up suffering from being mocked by his friends, as an illegitimate son, until peace was restored, my grandfather returned from the battlefield, and since then he told me that he has always been proud that his father is a hero.

The United States was defending South Vietnam. Which was invaded by North Vietnam unprovoked, South Vietnam did nothing to deserve this war. The United States stepped in to defend South Vietnam, North Vietnam took away the freedoms and the will of the people in South Vietnam, not to mention the countless atrocities the North committed against them. This war was not glorious in any way, its a travesty a dictator bent on growing his influence by destroying the lives of millions of people. A once prosperous South Vietnam destroyed by the North now forced to suffer poor conditions that exist in Vietnam today.

My brother, like most young black men at the time, was drafted in the army, to fight in Vietnam. A large number of white boys were able to hide in college or flee to Canada to avoid the draft. (Their refusal to serve was later pardon.) When it was my time to serve, I also refused. At that time, the war began to wind down, soldiers were being discharged from the military services and I guess there was no desire to pursue draft resisters. As a young black American, feeling that I was being mistreated by my own country, I would had still fought if the nation was being invaded. I did not support going half way around the world to fight people, that had done nothing to me. In fact, I respected their determination to be free.

My dad (black American) fought in the Vietnam war while his mother was back home in Selma, Alabama fighting for our freedom. My dad use to tell me that a few times while fighting in the jungle he and a Vietnamese soldier would cross paths unexpectedly then stare at each other. The Vietnamese always seemed confused to why a black man from America was helping the white man fight. Even they knew we barely had rights, was mistreated & many killed by our own countrymen because of our color. Unfortunately, after the confused pause a quick decision had to be made.

My mother was was a student in one Moscow university at that time. She remember seeing multiple Vietnamise people living in there dorm aswell. She didn't know who they were. May be exchange students. They looked a little bit old for students. One time she was bored so she went to a cinema club in their student dorm. There was only her and 1 Vietnamese guy. The move was "Cranes are Flying " - a tragic soviet movie about ww2, where girl is waiting for beloved one to come back from frontline but he died. At the end of the movie my mom saw sietnamese guy started to cry. Movie was sad but, she saw that it resonated a lot with him. She asked if he is ok, and why he is crying. He said that he was vietcong soldier and has been fighting for most of his life. For his action he was promoted and send by the communist party to Moscow to get higher education. That he is almost 50 years old while average age of living in Vietnam at that time was 60. He didn't have much time to live and was f%cking tired of war and this education he needed to get, and the only thing he wanted was peace and be left alone. That was a heavy for my mom. WW2 ended before she was born and Vietnam was something very distant and informed only by state media in a way of "glorious and patriotic working people of Vietnam are fighting against imperialist aggression". And here he was - tired and broken man, having his life devastated by the war

Very informative content. I think US that time just used the anti-communism sentiment. I am a Filipino, but I admire the Vietnamese people for their resiliency and willingness to fight and survive. I am for peace and democratic relationship. They were just fell victim from invaders. Watching this video, I fully understand that Vietnamese just want liberation and self-government. I am glad that Vietnam now has its sovereignty over their own nation and has been a very promising ASEAN member. When I was growing up in USSR in the 80s and 90s people used to collect stamps. Many of these stamps were from VietNam and probably 90% of them had images of Vietnamese art depicting Vietnamese fighting the war, and various scary pictures of war.

@@rusty3073 Depends on the time you meant, but in general according to my family - yes, it was not an actual padadise of course, but it wasn't that bad as western historians claims it was. Unfortunately with current attempts to rewrite history this claim is true only if there're a lot of witnesses left, who actually lived in the USSR and knew it from personal experience instead of history textbooks. But things will change in a future, when there's no one left. Even in Russia today there's a big difference of opinion between people who was born in raised in the USSR and who was born later, can't imagine what people in the west is thinking on the subject when the only source they can rely on is their history textbooks. I can at least ask my family and there's no reason for them to lie to me, can't really say the same about historians.

A stardard ration of Vietnamese troops was 8 pound of rice, salt, and anything u could find in the jungle. My grandfather plattoon happened to stumble on a US ration package with a can of Spam and that was just their best day ever

Actually in Vietnam many families are the mix of North and South factions and they all know and feel normal. They may quarrel with outsiders about history, about factions, but at home they are still happy and get along with the rest of the family even though they know that the other half has supported a different faction. My grandfather's brother used to support the South side, while my grandfather's family has always supported the North side, until now the two sides still stay connected and very familiar. I don't understand why, but I think part of it is that my grandfather's brother was not on the official payroll and did not directly participate in combat and was not in a high position in the Saigon system at that time.

My grandfather and his best friend participated in the Polpot war in Cambodia. When the war ended, he went home with an amputated leg and his friend also lost an arm. The sad thing is that many of his friends have gone and will never return. Not only that, after the war, harsh sanctions were imposed on Vietnam, leading to the next generation living in poverty and hardship. Until now, being at peace and living in true freedom, I feel extremely grateful for the blood and blood sacrifices of my ancestors.

This also left out that Col. Dewey was killed in Vietnam before America joined the war entirely and is thought to be one of the reasons that U.S. government had no trust for Ho Chi Minh. Additionally, they sort of glazed over just how much Ho Chi Minh really didn't care for communism later on and how he was effectively ousted and just kept as a figurehead/icon for a chunk of the war.

A little more context on that helicopter crew as that man desrrves to be recognized for his actions. This story was told to me during my service when we were discussing lawful orders. Hugh Thompson was a reconnaissance helicopter crew tasked with flying over a village to determine if their harbored pro-vietcong sentiment. During this time all he saw was the bodies of Vietnamese civilians murdered by US forces. He then took his helicopter and landed in the line of fire of american troops and aimed their guns at the perpetrators to prevent more killings. After approaching the leadership and preventing more bloodshed he then was able to convince the civilians to leave their bunkers to be evacuated and flew a young injured child to a hospital (those reconnaissance helicopters dont have much room). Afterwards he announced on radio: “It looks to me like there’s an awful lot of unnecessary killing going on down there. Something ain’t right about this. There are bodies everywhere. There’s a ditch full of bodies that we saw. There’s something wrong here.” and filed a report that helped create a cease fire. Later, he would testify against multiple U.S. army personnel and continued to fight to get justice. For his efforts he recieced death threats, people would leave dead animals on his porch, he ended up divorced with severe PTSD.

I was lucky enough to perform about 5 years ago for a ceremony with Vietnamese industrial leaders and the US Ambassador at an event in Hanoi. It was to celebrate ‘40 years of the normalization of trade’ between to the two nations and my band was a mix of Memphis musicians and Vietnamese musicians. My family had veterans from the war and I felt it was a full circle moment to share music and arts in peace. Thanks for the amazing content.

I think it was a a bit less than 40 years. That would have been on 1980. I was in HCM/Saigon in 1994 when President Clinton ended the trade embargo. Pepsi rolled out free soda to lots of people. I have a Vietnamese friend. Her father had studied at university in America before the war in Vietnam. His role in working for the north Vietnamese army was to listen in to American radio communications and translate them - helping the North Vietnamese know where American troops were being deployed and their plans and requests for help.

That's exactly what the US DIDNT want to tell the French at the time. Factoring in the domino theory and threat to the British and French colonies, the US told France to KEEP fighting. It's very easy to say it was nonsense now with retrospect to everything that happened, but you gotta take in mind that this was during the HEIGHT of cold war tensions and China was arguably the leading communist nation of the world, and since they were assisting the Vietminh the French essentially pressured the US to involve themselves or they'd pull out. America wanted to continue colonialism in Indochina to help Europe and Japan resuscitate economically after the massive recessions of WW2. Mayala was specifically crucial to this and was suffering from a communist rebellion at the time. This and the rumours of Chinese involvement in Vietnam was a major threat to the US and could have led to a spread of Communism across South East Asia. So yeah, it was far more complicated and a lot was at stake if the US didn't get involved, economically and politically. Not to say it was morally right, coz it wasn't. If you want a real example of irony, the US actually SUPPORTED the Vietminh during the Japanese occupation, and they even saved HCM from death at one point, but unfortunately other factors were deemed too important for them to follow through with their support.

I visited The north in 2018. Hoping to see a beautiful country and its people at peace!! I was treated like a celebrity Spent two months ! There with the aid of wonderful lady educator showing me the sights and sharing their rich heritage!! I even was asked to teach a few weeks at an international school. I just love the country and it’s beautiful people! What we were told of the country then and now was mostly lies!! There are more small businesses there than in our cities! Being a retired teacher I was soo impressed with the young people!! Cant weight to go back!!
