PS2 was legendary back in the day. Liberator squadrons flying gun runs, prowlers and vanguards trading fire while mosquitos and scythes got into dogfights overheard. MAX drops smashing through enemy lines. It’s still fun today but without the player count the battles are a little anemic, instead of the whole front being a buzzing battleground the big battle s are localized to two or three capture points.

Current Player here, and you said that the game will probably not reach it's glory days, but I beg to differ. There are a lot of veterans who have temporarily moved to other games waiting for the next big update. Before Escalation, population was at an all time low, and with that update, it brought about the biggest influx of new and returning players. I feel like something may be going on and the next big update will bring back more people. If not, then it's still impressive how the only mmofps has been kept alive for going on 11 years now.

My most memorable experiences of my PlanetSide 2 experience were in the pre-launch beta. You definitely get the most out of this game when the population is huge. I would indeed be playing or buying it day one since I've had great fun with the first and second game.

The dx11 migration was a pretty big deal to me, and the game runs way better since, allowing the devs more freedom to do a bit more, with more capable devs on staff.

Due to the very nature of the game, it will never be as big as cod/bf/battle royales as far as player base is concerned, so I have a very hard time thinking that there will be enough players to populate an even larger scale game. Even at its peak, PS2 only had enough players for a handful of continents at once. And this is coming from a 5000 hour vet.

I still remember when i was in the Planetside 2 Beta. Seriously it was so freaking impressive. Today its only a Cashshop with a Nice Graphic. But the Graphics were in the First Day waaaay better in Planetside 2. Today it is more Streamlined.

Yeah I've been playing the game super heavily for the better part of the last year and I WISH I could share your optimism for a sequel. A big problem with the game as it stands is that they're having to keep updating a game engine that's massively out of date and if you talk to anyone else who's been playing PS2 recently can tell you all the technical issues with the game. Like to their credit they do manage to add more things to the game, but because of the size of the game's actual programming files/code, anytime they do that it tends to break the game fairly bad. Like I don't fault the devs as much as the people above them probably just telling them to milk what they can out of the game for as long as they can and not give any funding for a sequel. Yeah the Planetside devs, Rogue Planet Games, would probably be stoked to give a sequel a shot but I don't think Daybreak (the company who owns the Planetside liscence at the moment) will actually green light work on a sequel.

I am completely sceptic about any sorts of promises of "bigger" game, more features, better graphics and so on. It gives me flashbacks to Eternal Crusade. The game that was an awful scam, cloacked in layers of promises uppon promises. PS2 came in 2012 with Lots of unbalanced weapons, missing tutorial, bugs, lack of optimization, chaotic base cap system and graphics unsuitable for this kind of gameplay that had to be lowered later. Game was therefor "complete" somwhere in 2016. But most of all - making a game like planetside is not easy. To have a multiplayer game with hundreds of players in one place is a nightmare to optimize. The fact that this kind of gameplay even exist is a miracle of its own. The biggest corporations in the world could barely have 50vs50 zoned battles in their games. And here we have an indie-almost-like game that does what none other giant could. So unless devs are going to focus on releasing a pollished core game and adding more things later, I dont see new title winning and holding sufficient playerbase.

Some of us PS1 vets tried #2 and gave up shortly after. I'm glad newcomers like what #2 eventually turned into but I just didn't see it. PS1 still steals my heart on this one. Nowadays most AAA games are just trash and I'd be worried they'd trash a PS3. But I HOPE to be proven wrong as I'd love to return to the series.

Liked the game, didn't need much grinding to get "good" weapons when it was mentioned to me. That the starter guns were already good. It just more on preference, which narrows it down greatly on few guns needed to be bought and used The only thing you need is experience Sadly the experience limited on GT710 gpu which then I had to suffer on bigger mid and long battles but still doable I think the only thing making this game alive tbh is Outfit (guild, clans or whatever you call it) I think they're pretty much a huge contributor on making content by massing members to do skirmishes around the map

I've always been interested in planetside but didn't play enough games to get into it but if they make planetside 3 with the whole controlling planets or whatever I would definitely play it and possibly go in with a large stack of players all partied up.

Planetside has an interesting dynamic among the players it seems where the veteran players (and many players in general) end up not liking the majority of the non-cosmetic changes (cat ear helmet store-removal aside) and want things to revert to how they were instead of the new. For example, on Reddit the Esamir map changes get a lot of disapproval, and more recently the Capture the Flag bases seem to be essentially universally hated in their current iteration. A planetside 3 game imo should strive to bring in new players with radical changes, not just the old players (some of which who are still playing likely because they prefer things how they are/were). There's also the potential issue of what happens to Planetside 2 once Planetside 3 is released. Will DBG shut down PS2 in an attempt to force players into PS3, even if PS3 still needs a lot of work upon release? What will happen to all the grinded and purchased character customizations that players spent on PS2? What if previous PS2 players can't play PS3 because they lack the computer/console hardware requirements?

I am a massive fan of planetside, i've spent thousands of hours playing on auraxis and it pains me to say it, but I dont think planetside 3 is in the cards. Certainly not in the near future. Planetside 2 is still a great game with an awesome community, but hopefully I am wrong and we'll get to see another installment in the series

Why are you using the steam chart? You should be using the fisu Population chart insted. Since steam dont take the stand alone launcher numbers into account. You can even check each servers pop. I hope that building, vehicle, land and other thing will destruction able. It would change up the game play a bit. As well real time building bases. Next step is space battles. Last time the starwar battlefield fail knowing they wanted to rush it. Unlike star citizen they still push trouble waters. As every fan like scifi open world to do what you want in game to enjoy fun without restriction in some degree. Become villain or hero or just normal day jobs.

That's not the onlly reason why. Planetside 2 used to be so populated it took forever to get in. What killed it was all the people hacking. People clipping into walls and floors, just walking around shooting people while getting blasted by 10+ people and several tanks (but he's not cheating, it's nanites.......sure), teleporting all over and stabbing you with a knife, it just got to the point where so many where cheating it wasn't worth playing anymore. It didn't help that if you reported people cheating, even with video and numerous people saying the same thing, you got banned.

I played PS1 religiously at the day, was best TR sniper on Europe (Macabi --- hail my frienemies - Tomack12 and IronIvan!) Loved the game passionately, and of course jumped to PS2 at Beta and played it later at release. For me - 2 is a miss, even with all the good intentions. It had its moments, but the overall strategical, deliberate game is not there. I really missed the heavyweight fights, when you had to really know your weapon and fight at right time and right position. 2 was CoD on large scale. Sure would love to see PS3, but with much hasitation

That's something I missed too (and why I quit #2). Fighting those push/pull battles were VERY addictive. They kept you constantly adapting to the moment in order to win. Granted most of my time was before the lattice exchanges, it still remained amazing. A play style I could only repeat on a macro level in say, BF2.

I need a PS3 with better maps, different objectives, and something different than a lattice system forcing mostly large battles. Also would love a little more consequence to death instead of instant respawn and the ability to instantly spawn all over the map. As a 20yr planetside veteran i can say i dont think this will happen. Planetside is a niche game...skills from other fps games dont transfer well due to the playstyle and the main issue PS has always had is "New Player Experience" and when combat stability is soley fixed on maintaining battle scale which means the more spaces to fight the bigger player base you need from various timezones to maintain it. On top of that the active dev team for planetside 2 was under 30 for while because it needs to be free to play, server side hit detection and have a monetary method so its ever going to be a massive hit for so many reasons. Its not worth an investers time because the return is so low.

Planetside 3 needs to move away from shared architecture of bases and vehicles The lightning class war tank should look different for each faction, as should the ant and Air units. Also howling missiles need to fuck off. Firing a guided rocket from behind shields to wipe out tanks is just a mood killer. Tanks have NO advantages on the field because most infantry can kill you off

If only, but Wrel doesn't understand the appeal of combined arms gameplay. He wants PlanetSide to play like Battlefield, and if a third game in the series ever comes, it'll be a Battlefield clone. The things that made PlanetSide great were largely ignored in PlanetSide 2, in favor of a faster, free to play experience that anyone could jump into with minimal learning. PlanetSide 1 was intricate. A player had to get to the fight, and make sure they had enough ammunition in their inventory, along with the other things they would need. Class distinctions were less obvious, and capturing bases actually took effort. Wrel looks down on all of that. He wants a game that is simple, paired down, with every thing in the game given a distinct purpose. Need proof? PlanetSide Arena. The idea that there should be multiple ways of doing the same thing is anathema to him, because he's all about the meta.

From Battle rank 1-100 you get a free 100 certs on each level up, besides the normal certs you grind for. So i dont get what problem you are having.

I reinstalled to give it another shot, base LMG's take 4-5 headshots to kill an enemy even in close proximity. That alone is enough for me to say no thanks, not for me. Maybe it's not the weapons, maybe it's the game design then.

Not saying the entire game is dogshit either. Overall it's a cool concept, not sure why some continents get locked though, I'm sure there's a reason but I couldn't tell just by looking at the interface. It's enjoyable in small bursts, but unless the guns improve or there's something I'm missing, it's just not a game I'd want to invest time in like I did Tarkov.

Great concept, just never been a fan of games art design, seemed always very tacky, generic & unimaginative so it never spurred me to get into it
