Awesome review. Having a gain matched amp/ processor that’s able to produce no hiss is definitely a deciding factor for a lot of people considering this amp if they have a Trinnov processor. I wished you went over the bi-amp feature, and how warm the amp got. Since it’s a class D amp it was probably only slightly warm to the touch anyway. It sounds like you will be switching out the Macs.

Adding (2) to my system myself has been the biggest and most drastic change to my home theater. The noise floor is now silent in the theater, the power and sound these deliver is one of the best home theater amps I have heard. Simply fantastic craftsmanship from the Trinnov team!

Shane you just described the common class D signature of an N Core amp in the Trinnov Amp. The problem with this expensive amp is that except for the gain matching with the processor, you can obtain similar sonic and dynamic results from more affordable class D multichannel amps. Thanks for the thorough review, and specially including the two channel performance.

I've heard the trinnov processor and amp combo that demoed A Quiet Place and agree the noise floor is ridiculously low and makes that film magical. Story Time - This is inspiring. We likely all have a journey that started with inspiration and progressed through the experience and swap pursuit of that which we love / enjoy. As the technology changes from era to future, it's nice to keep the community up to date on just how these ' end games ' are achieved. I really enjoyed hearing the process. This feel very natural and real world, however fortunate the 'spare change' is accumulated .. It's motivating for many to keep a dream and always pursue it. Great video!

Interesting video. I switched to Class D Hypex NCore amps about a year ago. My goal was to have identical amplification for all 13 channels, and I already had a Monolith 7 channel amp. So, I just figured I'd grab a second Monolith at some point. When I was ready to buy I started poking around just to see if there was anything else I was interested in checking out and I found myself very intrigued by these multichannel Class D amps. So I ordered one up and figured I'd go with whichever I amp I preferred, the Monolith or Hypex. I really loved the Hypex amps. Ton of power, light weight (at least compared to to the Monolith), and super quiet. I also felt like it was really neutral sound that, for me, closer replicated the sound at a movie theater. I really don't see myself going back to a solid state amp for home theater use.

Another interesting, informative review. Trinnov products being way above my comfort level in MSRP,(as were Zappiti, then later Anthem,) but still like to read and hear about Trinnov products, even since partnering with Zappiti. When you mentioned the 8M being powered by NC modules my interest was piqued. I then noticed online the back of the 8M has made in the USA by Amplifier Technologies. I use an ATI 523 and 524 in my system, for LCR, and bed layer surround duty. No hiss from those two either, but they don't have D825 connection jacks, but then my Anthem MRX 1140 doesn't either. They were pricey at 5200 for both, but way less than the 8M. Also using an Outlaw 5000X for 4 overhead channels, and a Crown XLi 2500 for the 2 subs, no hiss from those 2 amps either.

Did you notice difference in H1&2 with 4ch amp over what 1140 pumps out from its 60w class D section?

Hay Shane good review you are right about the background silence of the class D amplifier, but for the wrong reason the silence has nothing to do with gain matching it has more do with the power supply design used in in the amps all amps have noise linear power supplies tend to produce audible noise because the low frequency of the transformers whereas class D amplifiers use high speed switch mode power supplies, which have ultrasonic noise, which is inaudible to human hearing so they have the appearance of having a black noise floor. The audible hiss has more to do with the speaker impedance than the amplifier itself dose

i seen class d amplifier still current model been out few years , priced often £3.5 grand for 8 ch , and said no way . looked bit and found it for £455 . okay that seems reasonable . not saying model as i am watching it may get it ? for powering JBL five screen wide HF compression horns as current ones being used i find i notice faint cross-talk . so got try pink noise in one channel to see if it cross-talks to the other channels as it should be isolated , as for noise floor or s/n ratio . the higher the number the better the noise floor s/n ratio . the lower the number the more noise will be heard . got power the amp with no connections other than connected to speakers to see how quiet it is . testing with ear fine testing with test gear REW with basic RTA FFT with amp each outputs connected to the pc computer , special connection . i use a cinema professional , lucasfilm ltd THX sound system , that i can check if the amp is silent , check if it produces any harmonic frequencies when using sine wave tone , to see if i can see any harmonic frequencies ahead of the fundamental sine wave . plus other sort of noise . i would say the trinnov amp has some noise . yet you have no test gear ? can listen and if turning levels up all up the way , there will be some faint like noise . but that's with levels all turned up ! and never play the sine wave or music or movie that way, you'll knacker the amp and speakers . i wonder if that trinnov amp has been ASR tested ?

I have never seen "A Quiet Place". (Only one in the family who enjoys horror.) But I did bring myself to buy the McIntosh MC257 (7 channels) because of your videos. I don't own a Trinnov and never may, but I appreciate you for sharing your perspective. I'm not a Class D hater, but I suppose I'm a bit shallow for wanting something expensive to look the part; and the Amplitude looks too much like a plain, black box. Maybe if I ever own a home with a hidden equipment rack I'll check back to this and consider switching. Thank you again for sharing, Shane.

Hi Shane, The main reason you don't hear the hiss anymore is the gain match between the Altitude and amp. Your other amps probably have a gain around 29V, the Amplitude 19V. I had the same with my Classe CA5200's and CA2200 amps. Putting -10dB attenuators in between has the same effect and makes you use the optimum preamp range of the Altitude.

great review, btw just to say the gain matching/staging can be done with any amplifier which has gain control, so for example you can get to reference SPL maybe with amp gain 60% and preamp 0.0db level adjustment instead of 100% amp gain and -5.0db preamp for a given channel. In this way you lower the noise floor ratio.

In summary, neutral isn't always the best. The best is based on what you prefer. What's better than the Amplitude? Well, technically Purifi has been verified to measure and sound a little cleaner. So possibly an Amplitude V2 down the road. NAD, who optimized Hypex Ncore about 5+ years ago, has gone on to implement Purifi, with great results. In this context, Trinnov is slightly behind the curve already.

An additional factor is the speaker sensitivity and efficiency, which can worsen or enhance hiss. Ibms speakers may be less sensitive, so less hiss or even fully quiet. This is the rating that says 100 dB @ 1 watt @ 1 meter) for example. So in some systems with some speakers a Trinnov could be completely quiet with McIntosh amps.

Solid review. Assuming a given amp has minimal hiss, is there any point in spending more than ~$1k on an amp (e.g. 5-7 channels) with sufficient power? With DSP, any tonality is essentially negligible. As an owner of an OSD 5 channel amp having ~120 watts/channel, which I got refurbed for $500, I see 0 point in investing more at this performance point.

How do you connect 4 x Amplitude 8M which are needed if you want to use the 32 channels, if there is only one db25 cable connector?

Interesting story. I have a Alt 16 and the same McIntosh amps and honestly, I don’t hear a damn sound - silent. So might be something else at play beyond gain matching, not sure - or maybe with an 8 year old and living in a city you can never get to absolute silence I couldn’t tell the diff anyways, but mine has no audible sound and I was listening for it after this review so who knows

What's wrong with 16 channels versus 32 channels? Processors with so many channels has to have a negative impact on the sound. I am interested in the anthem 90 because of the sound quality but I am very concerned that the 16 channel processor is a lot more than I need. And I think would it sound better if it was for eight channels which is more than anyone really needs or at least most people.

So bought the expensive trinnov 16, (great choice) then upgraded it to the hugely more expensive trinnov 32, (same thing just more channels) because he did not want to be restricted to 16 channels, (fair enough) but he still 'only' has an 11 channel set up. errrr ok then. Sounds like a 'mine is bigger than yours' kind of guy. :)

so no actual tests with this £13.8k 8ch amp ? £13.8k . i see the specs but are those true specs or bs specs as test gear will show results . maybe buy some serious test gear . also you don't actually know what the frequency curve is like within the b-chain . you not tested checked any of that with REW RTA sweeps graph overlays . there better 8ch amps out there that are just as better than trinnov that do equally the real thing for far , far away less $ £ and are class d .
