I'm surprised how Joe N tell is reasonably successful in this product space despite not knowing much. Incredible.

Because the Trinnov and the Storm are superniche products. For every 1000 Denon AVR's sold, maybe even 10,000 one Trinnov is sold. The engineering team at Trinnov is also a specialized team and highly paid. So that's why they cost 10 to 20x more than what you get at Best Buy or Crutchfield. Costs are also going up because of the chip shortage.

You're right Youthman! The new Marantz Receiver did jump in price. Originally, It was listed at $7000, and now it's listed at $9000 on the Marantz website...

Hey @Youthman, when you said that in top 3 of your theatres for sound two were running Emotiva processors - were these in full manual PEQ mode or maybe DIRAC or combination or something else?

It’s not about processing power per se. Customisation - it will correct your setup even if your speakers are not placed correctly according to Dolby spec - none other processor does it except for Stromaudio and Trinnov. Second big benefit is - you keep it and they make sure you get all the updates wether its a software with new features or hardware changes - none other manufacturer gives you that - you will spend $$$ close to Trinnov price over a decade if you like to change your processor often - every 3 years or so. To me invest into image firstly - spend big there - audio comes second unless youre an audiophile.

A lot of this conversation completely misses the fact that Trinnov doesn’t use all the Chips from Texas Instruments and the likes. It can natively decode 192 and doesn’t have to downsample and on the 32. But even their 16 down samples to 48. So their 32 with only 16 channels enabled has a noticeable difference over their 16.

Hi Guys, is a heap more value of the Trinnov Altitude. Sorry for the wall of text. Yes these are PC based running Linux and do all the rendering in software. This allows extra audio formats to be added with needing to change the processor. For example, when the next version of Atmos comes out, Trinnov will be first to market with using that format as they dont need to change the hardware to accept the new format. These means that the Trinnov can last many times longer than the traditional processors. I am sure there are lots of users out there that change processors/receivers every few years. Just not required with Trinnov. There really hasn't been any hardware changes since they released it. And yes the HDMI board can be replaced for new versions if you are using it for HDMI switching. . When it comes to calibration, the Trinnov uses a 4 capsule microphone and this allows the processor to work out exactly where each of the speakers are in your room, not only distance and amplitude, but also the direction and height. Audyssey etc, have a single mic that only checks delay and amplitude. This allows the Trinnov to compensate for speaker location with 3D mapping. For example, my front Atmos speaker are much further forward in the room than is ideal. So when sound is meant to come out of the top front speakers, the Trinnov plays 90% of the sound from the front and 10% from the top rear speakers, dragging the image for that sound into the correct place. Each of the speakers are also corrected for phase, which allows for changes due to crossovers, etc. The bass management can do smarts with location for multiple subs, like if you have 4 subs in the corners of the room, and there is a bass heavy sound at 50Hz for the left front speaker, it can send that tone to the sub located in the left front corner of the room. They also allow for weight of seat position, in which the processor can allocate a percentage of the processing to each of the calibrated seats. This aligns the sound depending on the weighting for each of the locations. For example, I have a single row of 3 seats, each with 33% of the processing, so everyone gets a good experience. I then have a preset that allocates 100% of the processing to the left seat. For when i am watching alone. That provides perfect time alignment, frequency response and remaps the speakers for that location only, ensuring that the sound comes from exactly where it is meant too, even when I about 3 feet from the centre of the room. While we are talking about presents, you can have up to 29 individual presets, that change everything about the system, from seat positions, weighting, target (house) curves (these can be set per speaker too), optimisation setting (acoustics corrections, level alignment, delay alignment, etc), speaker layout and count. For the outputs, these are number and can be assigned to anything you like. It would be possible to have a 1.0.10 system, with a single centre speaker and 10 subs (not that you would). This also allows for active cross overs, where you could use 3 channels for a speaker and run tweeter, mid, and bass, change the cross over points, and amplitude for each of these. Also the support from Trinnov is amazing, they are super responsive and can remotely assist with the unit, providing help and recommendations. I've only really scratched the surface here. Yes they are expensive, and its not the kinda product that you can spend a hour with to fully understand it. I reckon it took me a good month to really wrap my head around it, but for me it was one of the best things that I purchased for my room. Don't even get me started on how good these are for two channel music too. And no, I do not work for Trinnov. :P

Thanks for the info. I've read through some of their manuals and the amount of customization is truly second to none. The word that comes to mind is thorough. They've thought of pretty much everything and they've taken the time to implement it. You can tell they really care about providing the best possible product to the end user.

@@joentell just watched your remapping video. The problem with all the other calibration systems is that they assume where the speakers are. All they can measure is distance and amplitude. So it pretty important to have the speakers in the correct location, so the sound comes from the correct spot. If a speaker is not in a ideal location the placement of the sound will be off. With the Trinnov, it know exactly where each speaker is, in reference to each seating position. So it can place the sound in the correct location using the 3D remapping. It knows the speaker location via the 3D calibration microphone, which is accurate to 1 degree and 1 centimetre.

@@billmars2641 Yes, I've put days of thought into it, not hours, days. I've just setup my own remapper on my computer for my studio monitoring system and it works. I can even rotate the sound around and spin my chair around and the entire image shifts accordingly. I may even experiment with head tracking sometime. I think most systems can do level and delay just fine. So in a polar coordinate system, they know the radius or distance to the speaker. It can do that fairly accurately as they are also taking multiple measurements. More static mics can help with the accuracy of that measurement, but a single mic is sufficient. By adjusting delay and levels, they can make all the speakers seem equidistant to the MLP. Most AVR's can even account for tonality shifts caused by changes in on-axis vs off-axis or vertical height differences which can be addressed by EQ changes at the MLP. BUT...what they cannot do that Trinnov can, is they do not know the azimuth. They don't know the relative angle of that speaker and therefore, they don't know what combination of channels to route to that speaker. Let me know if that coincides with your understanding of how Trinnov works. They may also do more advanced mapping by looking at dispersion characteristics of each speaker since their white paper refers to that, so I wouldn't be surprised if they implement that as well.

@bill mars, can u tell us what Trinnov does that the Jbl 75 can’t do, It is hard to Find what the minor differences are, as Trinnov will not give all there secret sauce to the white label jbl

Trinnov is great great…..but it’s 2%ter type stuff. To me, 98% of HT enthusiasts enjoy fantastic experiences without one. Of course, it’s end game stuff…..it’s like all the other 2%ter type equipment…like Kscape, etc….It’s about budget and what pain factor you’re willing to go with.

The actual processing guts on a Trinnov isn’t anything special; it’s a mini ITX motherboard with an I3 Intel CPU using the included fan that comes with it with kinda a pathetic amount of RAM. If you bought a mid tier or above phone in the last 4 years you’ve got more processing power and RAM in your hands than this. It’s a very cheap PC; the premium comes from the software used. Which paints a lot of other processors in a bad light; you’re paying over $3k for a pre-pro and the actual processing power is weaker than a near decade old CPU using 2 gig DDR2 (up to DDR5 nowadays and hard to buy less than 8gig of DDR4). That means all these AV Processors have less processing guts than this and are still charging an arm and a leg.
