Your toilet has a trap inside, so you froze the water in the trap and BOOM. You can add a little antifreeze in the toilet and fix the freezing.

That's a great tip. Thank you very much. We were pulling the water out of the bowl with a mini sump pump. Seemed like that was doing the trick.

Nice little diesel heater at 12:05 or so. I bought one of those for my garage and can't believe the difference it made in comfort during the winter months. Makes working on the motorcycles / bikes / cars so much more bearable when it is 65-70 as opposed to 30! Looks like it cures concrete, too!

Mate, it’s been an amazing journey watching this project unfold. Learning so many life skills along the way must be the super satisfying for you as well. And to be able to do it with friends and family is the icing. How good’s dad?! Doubt I’ll ever get to see the place in person (based in Melbourne, Australia), but will live it vicariously and think “never say never”… As an aside, even though everyone thinks every animal in Oz is trying to kill you, I’ve never had to deal with a bobcat (or whatever that thing was!) or huge-arse bear!!! Good luck with it all💪

Agree with other commenters that the financial transparency is awesome. So often you watch these people doing homesteads and stuff like that and there's no idea how much any of that costs, if they're trust fund babies, got rich with bit coin, etc, etc. You laid out exactly what you're doing and for entrepreneurs that follow you that is super valuable information.

Brian, I’ve been following Everstoke from Day 1, and it’s a great project in so many ways. If the goal is getting guests in to start making the investment self-sustain, then I think you have to offer more than just the 5 miles of trails on the property. I know you PLAN to have a lot more, but for someone planning to come in from out of town and spend a few days, they are going to be looking for several half-day rides that are reachable from the base camp at Everstoke. I don’t hear you talking at all about rides in the area, but people are going to want to possibly do Mt. Hough, Downieville, etc. Maybe there is an enterprising shuttle driver out there that you can partner with to open up more of the local trail system to your guests. If I was going to go see Seth’s world, I wouldn’t just go ride Berm Peak. I’d be making sure I had rides planned all over the area to take in the best that western NC has to offer.
@bkxc
@bkxc 5 ай бұрын

As the trail network at Everstoke continues to grow, the main attraction for the area for MTB'ers is still (and might always be) the huge, epic nearby rides. There are several that can be pedaled right from Camp Everstoke, but since those are already a lot to bight off, a lot of people are still going to shuttle up the Gold Lake Highway to hit Mills Peak or one of the half dozen or more routes in Lakes Basin before pedaling back to Everstoke (vs. doing the nearly all-dirt versions from Graeagle). Everstoke is a great, centerally located "base camp" (next to an awesome brewery!) for hitting Quincy, Downieville, Lakes Basin, and now Beckworth Peak. And more is coming, thanks to SBTS and the Connected Communities initiative. I've noticed that many guests who camp at Everstoke pretty much have a big ride off campus planned on e.g., Saturday. When they come back to camp, some rip a few laps at Everstoke before hitting the shower, river and/or The Brewing Lair. Sunday mornings they tend to ride more at Everstoke, although many grab a tool and help build. Local families seem to drop their ripper teens off, and they do spend a lot of time riding all over Everstoke. To hit every completed trail at Everstoke right now, its already a 10+ mile ride, with minimal repeating of anything. I fell in love with the Lost Sierra because of the big rides in Lakes Basin and Downieville, back in the mid-1990's. I fell in love with Everstoke because its different than all that chunk and commitment (to long days in the saddle)... and we get to build anything we want! :-)

@@bkxc I can’t claim to have seen every video, but the overwhelming theme of what is out there is about Everstoke itself and the logistical challenge of making 90+ acres of off-grid paradise into something useable to the MTB crowd. Don’t get me wrong, I find it fascinating and keep coming back for more, but for every minute of trail coverage, there’s an hour of toilets, water pumps, solar systems, and game camera footage. I do hope to visit sometime in the next year and test the shred myself!

Trails are coming along great. Toilet broke because it has a p-trap in it that holds water. That water most likely froze and broke your toilet. Keep up the great work

Man, I am suspicious about it being the P trap since there were many many nights freezing temps and wayyy too much water came out after it exploded.

I had a friend do a similar thing with raw land in socal . He also had the seller financing and the balloon payment which he was not able to do and lost the land . His problem was issues with employment and saving up for that payment . The good thing is you have no choice . The clock is ticking . Once paid for it's yours . No paying twice as much in 30 years for the property with interest Seems like you found a good partner . Working for an employer will never get you on top of the world as far as finances . Having your own business is the key to success and your putting in the effort to make that happen Cool things with that process is hanging out with Dad working on projects . Those memories will last a life time . We'll done .

Well, pay now or pay later. The Good-Fast-Cheap triangle can only optimize 2 of these. Either there's a big investment and hard/high carrying cost to get going good and fast or you go in and bear a lot of those "oh shit" surprise costs which always cost more on the long run. All you can do at this point is keep at it and have a plan that you can work towards.. Creature comfort will always be #1. People won't come back if they can't be comfy and they won't tell their friends anything good.... Remember, you are not most people and the general MTB adventure rider expectation is different. So focusing groups based on visitors (people you don't know works best so they give you real feedback) invited for free stays will help identify the shortfalls. Too bad you are on the other side of the continent otherwise it looks like a good place to throw in a bit of work for a week of a different MTB experience... Stress less, ride more. Take care.

Everstoke is located in mountain bike mecca so making enough revenue to keep the property is probably going to have to come from camping and stays in the cabin(s), or some type of sales. The longer you wait to start the further behind your going to be.

Invite some KZbin trail builders out to help build trail. Get more people talking about it. Need more miles of trail and I’m sure you are aware of that. Go on some podcast to promote it. Hit up Josh Blum host of Trail Eaffect again but talk about the challenges of building this type of bike resort. Find a big van life KZbin channel that happens ride a little MTB. Have them promote the tiny house as a home base while highlighting all the things you can do in the area. Of course they will highlight the trails but I really don’t know what else there is to do in that area. This brings in a different audience than a strictly MTB channel. What bike brands are in the area? Do they want to sponsor a trail? Love the channel and all the challenges you share with us. I hope to visit Everstoke in the future.

These are all excellent ideas! A great person to bring out to work on some trail features would be Backyard trail builds, he has a very steady viewer base and makes some epic features. Get him to stay for a couple weeks and make a keystone feature or 2 that really brings hype for what is happening at everstoke.

Dude take an acre and make a cheap & simple snow tubing & sledding park area. Charge $10 per person & $20 for parking. All you need is a small hill & steps and a good waiver. You'll clean up in CA.
