Okay, so I see several takeaways: 1. I saw this series when I hadn't even seen any one of your videos before. 2. KZbin and Google, which is the *fourth largest company in the world* doesn't know how to use their own website, which is worth *billions of dollars* . 3. Nothing is gone forever, especially on the internet. The whole reason that people go to jail for *life* is because it is so difficult and you have to go down so many rabbit holes to permanently delete things. Google would have to be the most low-tech website in history to not understand how this works, especially because you need to know how computers actually work to code. Plus, there are always hard copies. I've learned the hard way that computers eat things, but hard copies exist for a reason. Should you have had a backup? Yes. Should they expect you to? No. 4. KZbin thinks that since they either messed something up or don't care, they just need to throw words on a page with incorrect links and hope to God that you don't read it. 5. Twitter nobodies (sorry) such as the people that proved that the videos were there care more/know how to investigate more than KZbin and Google personnel. 6. KZbin only cares when people like Shane Dawson and Gigi Hadid get involved. 7. Twitter has a better recovery process than KZbin. 8. Google and KZbin, the fourth largest company on the globe as of 2019, doesn't have proper customer service for the average consumer. I'm so glad that this is changing! It's a terrible business practice, and could drive smaller creators that might become the next PewDiePie to not join the site for fear of this happening to them. (Edit) Wow, so... umm.. wtf?? Why is this so liked? Its literally just me spewing, I've written much more thought out comments before... so.. um, yeah. Thanks for 750 likes. Y'all are actually insane.

I've been attempting to get all the bits together to start my own channel, and this series kind of discouraged me from doing so as it is very worrisome to know that people steal channels and sell them for $500... if this happens to such a large channel, what's saying it couldn't happen to a tiny channel with not even ten subscribers? They deftinitely wouldn't care about a speck of a channel like that! KZbin has hundred of thousands of hours uploaded to their sites every second. Her deleted videos have been written over. It's not even about tediousness. When you delete something and save something the information gets written over. If you consider the mass of data and information coming through to KZbin it makes perfect sense they dont have it anymore. As soon as space is opened up on their servers I'm sure the space gets used pretty quickly. That's probably why they have a data retention policy for these reasons. You always want to treat the internet like it's forever but it's not always the case.

My blog got hacked. 10 years of content lost. It was a nightmare. I felt guilty, dumb, and ashamed. I didn't update or backup like I should have. I realized it was my fault, but at the same time I was angry at someone who would do it for no reason at all. Just because they could do it. I know how Meghan feels. It's terrible. Okay, I keep seeing this. I work in cloud security, have worked for a certain cloud service provider with an...uh...online marketplace, and this is my bread and butter. There's a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding here. To be semi-technical and very boring: the services are replicated across regions for disaster recovery and resiliency. The data you upload to those services? Generally not replicated across region unless you specify it to be. To add more complexity: there are laws and regulations in place that Google must follow (GDPR, CCPA, SOC, PCI, etc.) that state once a customer says they want something deleted, Google must delete it. Surprisingly, deleting something from a cloud isn't actually immediate. It takes awhile to purge something or render it inaccessible via key deletion, overwriting, whatever. So when Google is saying, "Our services use encrypted backup storage as another layer of protection...data can remain on these systems for up to 6 months," they're talking about Google data. They're talking about the service itself that hosts your data, not the information you upload to it. Google's data deletion policy is 30 days, meaning when a customer says, "Hey Google, delete this thing", Google has 30 days to delete the data, otherwise they'll get into a LOT of trouble with regulatory bodies.

Pretty sure they're just saying what it takes to make her feel better. Smaller youtubers will continue to have this problem but most of us will continue to not hear about it because if you don't follow those small youtubers you don't know it happened. And so we'll all think it must have been solved. Until the hackers get lucky with another big account.

My laptop was stolen during University and was also not backed up. Something that helped me get over the lost photos and videos I lost of the previous six years was the realization that I still have those memories myself and just because an image or video was gone did not mean my memories were also stolen. Glad your situation has been resolved, I can't imagine the relief!

I think that Meghan is displaying so much maturity by recognizing that the damage has been done, there is no way to change it, but that there is hope for the future and for this to never happen again. There could be backup so she could get some videos back, but the bigger outcome is that KZbin is making changes as to prevent this from happening and Meghan recognizes it as her repayment and chooses to move on (Not holding a grudge and taking them to court, which could potentially hurt others, instead of helping them in the future). This is a Life Moral: Things will happen. They will suck. But once they happen we can't turn time back to undo the damage. But we can choose to move forward and work towards better things. For the sake of KZbin and help with smaller creators having this massive problem fixed I think you are one of the best people out there to be a spokesperson to really get the help the system needs for creators. I wish this hadn't happened to you, I've watched you for years and have forced every. single. boyfriend I've had over the past few years to watch Olivia vlogs with me and I feel for you how hard it must be to have those videos gone and I can't imagine how hard that would be. I really hope this gets easier and that KZbin comes through. As far as creators who can be incredibly upset while simoltaniously being able to give solid feedback to KZbin about the changes they can make I personally think you are a great balance. At least from what ive seen of you on KZbin. Love you're channel and everything you do, wish you the best if you see this!
