Mu Qing as a cat and Feng Xin as a dog is a perfect description. In the comic, Fu Yao and Nan Feng were draw with dog suit in the moment when they suspect San Lang, Fu Yao rolling his eyes and Nan Feng with a frown. Preceptor is a spiritual leader or the main priest of the kingdom, Feng Xin and Fang Xin are different names, have different meanings.

I still keep thinking about touch starved xie lian.. he's so sensitive to hua cheng's touch, and when hua cheng started to avoid touching him, xie lian immediately took notice and was upset by it. and no wonder, cause no one had treated him with such gentleness in 800 years 🥺

Oh an explanatory detail from the book. Xie Lian just went outside to talk in the matrix thingy so San Lang wouldn't notice as a mortal. (Yeah, those 3 are suposely acting as cultivators... very badly so). You don't have to go to heaven to join the group chat! Nice choice of pins!! Love it! And yes, the interactions this episode was hilarioussss Happy to know you'll be doing content regarding the books! I also don't know how I'd do it in a way I can enjoy reading and not being distracted... Maybe make an update after certain amount of chapters? Or halfway through and at the end? Others make a post-review or make read-alongs, but I see downsides to both. A mix of few chapters as read-alongs and a few chapters of review is another option I just thought about. But whatever is best for YOUR experience. And it doesn't have to be now! See you next week, lovely!

"Gege" doesn't only imply closeness between two people, but also a level of respect. Mostly because by using the term, you're basically acknowledging someone as your elder, which is pretty relevant in chinese culture. Particularly in that age period, and *especially* when used by a man of a similar age. - 11:51 I was at an event where they interviewed the TGCF english cast and Howard Wang is definitely my favourite. He's so sweet and it's evident just how much he cares about TGCF😭 he spent a while talking about how important the story was to him. Fun fact: Apparently he helped the other cast members learn the correct pronunciation of the chinese names. - 13:51 He has a sixth sense that helps him find Xie Lian. the way I saw you upload this yesterday and wanted to watch right away but I needed to catch up on sleep and slept for 14 hours... why would my body betray me like this... but I'm here now! :D 1:42 this is so real... i'm also usually a main character simp. like if the main character isn't compelling how am i supposed to get invested in the story to begin with?? 4:14 yay! i was hoping you would! it's okay if it takes you some trial and error to figure out how to make videos about the books, we're just along for the ride and ready to hear your thoughts however you present them! 10:11 yeah when the dub came out a lot of people complained about san lang using "xie lian" instead of gege because in chinese.. he would never say that lol. it actually sprouted a lot of memes about "chinese san lang" beating up "english san lang" for the usage LOL. but apparently crunchyroll really discouraged the dub team from keeping any chinese terms and phrases like that, so I think using "xie lian" is the best option they could have gone with under the circumstances. it's much better than translating it as "brother" or "bro" or something... can you imagine TT before the dub came out we were terrified that's how they'd translate it 22:19 this is so real... if hua cheng was born in the 21st century he would 100% be writing self insert fanfic of himself and XL LOL 27:27 your understanding of heaven's structure is very accurate! of course there will be more details to learn as the story goes on, but you have a good understanding of the basic structure 36:32 he was just in the communication array! if they're in that "room" with all the curtains, it's just how to communication array is animated. if you see them outside with a bunch of fancy buildings around (like at the beginning of S1E1) then you know they're physically in heaven 37:21 a Preceptor is basically an advisor and religious leader. the chinese word for preceptor is "Guoshi", some people in the fandom use this instead of the english translation of the title since the original fan translation kept it as "guoshi" 40:29 the interactions between san lang, nan feng, and fu yao are literally peak humor, i love the scenes when they're all together LMAO 43:59 spelled "Fang Xin"... not to be confused with Feng Xin the god lol. although the pinyin and pronunciation may seem similar, in chinese it isn't really, it's just a coincidence. Fang Xin is 芳心 (translates to "affections of a young woman") and Feng Xin is 风信 ("wind" and "trust/faith")--translations are from the glossary in the book. also in terms of pronunciation it is slightly different. "Fang" is pronounced like the english word "fang", "Feng" is pronounced more like "fung" (E's in chinese are more of an "uh" sound than an actual "e" sound) 50:11 girls!! :D a very understandable reaction ^^ 58:09 the 5 elements traditionally in chinese are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water btw! a little bit different from the 4 elements we usually think of in the west loving your theories and analysis as always! ​@@SpacedOutPuffin lol of course! the nice thing about Chinese pronunciation is it's at least consistent, so once you know the different vowel and consonant sounds you don't really have to worry about exceptions, but it can be tricky mastering the pronunciation in the first place. I've been learning Chinese on and off for a couple years now and I can tell the difference between different sounds and know when they sound off, but I still struggle pronouncing certain sounds myself 😅 yeah the wind master is still an elemental god even though that's not one of the traditional 5 elements. it's one of those cases where mxtx took some liberties/used her own creativity with her worldbuilding if that makes sense 🤔 I mostly brought it up as a fun fact but I can see how that's a bit confusing, sorry! looking forward to the continuation of your journey as always 💖

The group has just, The Most tension. It’s like going to a friend’s birthday and you just hate all of their friends but love them enough to go anyway. They all hate each other, and imo they all clocked each other (I do believe the insults were incredibly targeted at Fu Yao, you can’t be this petty on accident), but they all love Xie Lian enough to stick around and try and protect him from The Terrible People (everyone else in the group). I always like to imagine (this isn’t spoilers, just personal headcanons) that Feng Xin and Mu Qing both always had a bit of a thing for Xie Lian. And while those relationships eventually soured, for reasons you will find out in the books, they still have a lot of love and respect for him. (Another side note headcanon, remember how in episode 1 in the telepathic matrix Ling Wen says that Nan Yang was “spending most of his time on the mortal plane”? I always wonder whether he might have been looking for a certain someone he once used to follow)

Oh yes, The Tension. It's very much a "we will (barely) tolerate each other's existence bc we all want to hang around This Dude" situation and it's what makes it so fantastic imo... you've already put the feeling into words lol well. if I was in Xie Lian's friend group at any point I, too, would have had a bit of a thing for him... I think it's just the inevitability of being around him. I think everyone he meets has a brief moment of "OH" at some point (see: Ling Wen in ep 1, a handful of side characters, + I'm sure I'll have more evidence soon). In other words, your headcanon isn't hard to envision haha (I like this headcanon too, oh my goshhhh)

Yeayyy! I'm so glad we're going to get book videos from you eventually! Gaywatch and Romania Black are my favorite youtubers who I've watched read the series on their channel. ANOTHER EPISODE YESSSSS You mentioned a Xie Lian sensor, and I find that funny because in reality, Hua Cheng has been searching for Xie Lian for the past 800 years. They would have met sooner, but Xie Lian’s bad luck stopped them from meeting until now. So I wouldn’t say he has a sensor, he’s just whipped. 😂 I feel this should be explained. Both gods and ghosts have spiritual power, even mortal cultivators can access spiritual power. Though, of course a ghost or mortal doesn’t hold nearly as much spiritual power as a god with calamities being an exception. When a ghost becomes a calamity they get significantly more powerful, and can even rival gods. That happened with Hua Cheng of course, and if you remember, Hua Cheng defeated those 30 something heavenly officials. The heavenly officials Hua Cheng beat broadcasted it to their followers in their dreams because they thought they’d win. When they lost their followers saw it all happen and came to worship Hua Cheng instead. Hua Cheng ain’t a god, but he has a lot of followers on top of all ready having an obscene amount of spiritual power. Anyways, my point is, spiritual power isn’t exclusive to just heavenly officials and gods.

The dynamic between HC, FX and MQ is so funny! And them showing back up means we aren't the only third wheels anymore XD The power of a ghost can come from different sources from what I understood. Being a strong reason that binds them to not move on (for example the wish for revenge or general resentment), fighting, being worshiped or even devouring other ghosts. There are probably even more ways and I am sure there are people who can explain it better but I tried (⁠*⁠・⁠～⁠・⁠*⁠). Domestic hualian is such a popular concept in the fandom, I don't blame EP 5 for being a fan favorite XD I'm def screaming in my confines at all your discussions in the intro "How deep does it goes?" you have no idea but you can be assured that 800 years of devotion would all make sense in the end once you read the full novel If you've heard of the Xianle trio then this EP introduced us to the Xianle Quartet! Their dynamic is fun together esp with Huacheng throwing subtle insults XD Also I'm glad the donghua team put a highlight on the hualian sandstorm scene compared to the novel Ruoye being a hualian shipper it grabbed on San Lang as something "solid" lmaoo Genuinely enjoyed your reaction to TGCF I'm excited for the next one!

So glad you'll be doing a book reaction as well, I'm sp excited for you to see just how funny Xie Lian can get, he's so brutally honest and silly that I have no idea whether to laugh or cry. I'm so excited for you to watch Episode 7, this arc is great and is an icon for being the "oh this again" arc (it makes more sense with context ngl, so um, basically from what I remember, when the donghua aired this was the arc tgcf was centered on and it ended there too, when the Vol 1 book released it also ended there before vol 2 came out many months later, and when the manhua was running its serialisation it was also coincidentally going through this arc as well so people made memes about having seen this arc way too many times and wanting to move past it). I can't name the Arc yet tho without spoilers but they'll reveal it in the next one. Also, about MQ and FX's reaction to SL being there will never not be funny-they're like the Myth of "Consensual" Sex meme where hualian say to eachother: "i consent" and MQ & FX scream: "we don't!" I love the fact that they both join forces to have beef with him all because they were expecting to be alone with XL and then they find out he not only did they spend time together alone but he also stayed the night with him, so scandalous! Oh, and speaking of beef, the next episode and the episodes to follow get more fun, especially now that Windmaster is there and that means their bestie will be there too! As to why this is significant to beef? You'll understand when you meet them. My basic understanding of ghosts/the undead are ghosts essentially stick around when they have “unfinished business” or a reason not to move on; this can range from resentment, revenge, confusion, love, regret, or just not wanting to move on. How they appear after death can be based on how they died, their reason for staying as a ghost, energies in the world, etc. I’m sure there’s tons of cultural references to Chinese folklore and the afterlife, because non-living beings can take so many shapes. They can be demonic creatures, animals, spirits, humans, the list goes on. Keep him in mind for later. 57:50 I mentioned this once! We also have Elemental Masters in Heaven. There are several types of God types, but only a select few are mentioned: Martial, Civil, Elemental 59:55 this story is all about the little things 💕 It’s so so sweet This episode was full of comedy and chaos with some sprinkles of sweetness. Someone for sure will tell you but anyway, "Feng Xin" = General Nan Yang 风信 - Fēng Xìn 风 fēng - wind 信 xìn - belief, faith "Fang Xin" = first evil imperial preceptor (can also appear as "state preceptor", translated from Guoshi). 芳心 - Fāngxīn 芳 fāng - fragrance, flowers 心 xīn - heart [Edit: Btw the translation of the characters together are different, I provided what I had at hand, but I see someone already posted the more accurate translation] I have trouble to distinguish the pronunciations of both names honestly

I’m just here sitting through your theory-crafting and observations like 😳 like girl you have no idea how spot on you are in some of the things you say it’s mind-blowingly impressive. And yaaaay I’m so glad you’re gonna get into the novels. Several KZbinrs have done read-alongs and that’s great if you’re comfortable with it but don’t push it if you’re not. Getting your initial reaction to the novel is fun of course but I know it can be hard to sit there and read aloud in front of the camera. Or you don’t even have to read aloud, just have the camera on and cut to the points where you react or make comments as you read silently. I know that prob takes a lot to edit tho. I know one channel made their read-alongs into livestreams. That could be fun for audience interaction while you read. If you’re more into recorded videos, you could do bulk chapter reviews. I.e. making a video review after reading 4-5 chapters or something like that. Maybe a combination with some of what I suggested. I’m just spitballing ideas atp but do what’s best suited for you and just have fun with it :D

You've basically listed most of the options I'm toying with😅I'm not sure I could do all-live read-alouds, not bc I think it's uncomfortable, but bc so much of my focus would be on the reading itself rather than letting your mind work through a story the way it does when you're reading alone! And again with English not being my first language... idk, maybe it would be fun to do live readings for certain chapters, or even the finale of an arc or the whole series? Review videos are definitely more my thing, but they lose out on those moments of first-experiences--like the reactions are already lived through, you know? I'm playing around with an idea of time-lapsed readings with pauses for important parts/pages that I enjoy or that were suggested... combined with discussions/board updates between chapters. Something like that! thank you for your ideas, they really help me out since I'm mostly discussing this in my head haha.. Mostly, I can't wait to know which theories I got right---and which ones I'm very sure of that just failed haha

I love this foursome together. So funny! But this is where the whole Gege thing has so much importance. The first thing Nan Feng and Fu Yao hear, even before they see San Lang, is someone addressing their prince by the familiar “Gege“. No wonder they’re suspicious / mildly outraged. And who’s prepared to bet money on it being a coincidence that San Lang threw the broom to Mu Qing’s deputy? And would you put down any money on San Lang not recognising them? I mean, it’s your money! The contrast between HC and XL taking care of each other, while HC quietly sneers at NF and FY, just cracks me up. The exposition dumps are a bit boring (that’s where this adaptation falls down a bit - a book can show, not tell, whereas an animated adaptation has to do the reverse as there’s nowhere near enough time). And I love you catching every little detail! Looking forward to the next one already.

Have you considered reacting to the opening and ending song lyric translations at some point? It seems like most of them (if not all) have been written for the show. Some of the songs give a little more insight into our character's perspectives and feelings (Hua Cheng's especially). I love that about the soundtrack because you don't get his perspective like you do with our lovely MC Xie Lian. That said, reacting to songs can be pretty difficult because of copyright. If you don't want to react to them you should most definitely still check them out. 🙂

To give some context to the ghosts in this story - in order to become a ghost after death, something has to hold you in the material plane tightly enough, like a really strong emotion. For most spirits, it's some kind of resentment, a sense of betrayal, or other negative emotions (like Xuan Ji). That's not the case with Hua Cheng. I think it's pretty easy to figure out what exactly is holding him as a ghost, especially based on what you said at the beginning of the discussion 👀 As for the structure of the ghost realm, it's not clear because ghosts don't exist in a highly organized society like Heavenly Officials do. Their world is definitely more chaotic and follows the law of "the strongest." Remember Wind Master, they might come back in the future! The interactions between Hua Cheng, Fu Yao, and Nan Fang in this episode are hilarious just because you know they're all in disguise and everyone knows it except Xie Lian (who's just guessing) 😂 I don't want to give you spoilers, but I'll just say that Hua Cheng has a good reason for disliking Mu Qing and Feng Xin. I don't know if it's ever explicitly stated in the book or in the donghua, but it's easy to figure out from the context. Hua Cheng doesn't really like anyone who has treated Xie Lian poorly in any way, whether in the past or present. To be honest, the arc that's currently starting (called the Banyue Arc) isn't really important to the overall plot in the long run, and aside from the interactions between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian, it can be pretty boring. It's a good thing you're taking notes, because it helps you keep track of the plot. I often had no idea what was going on while watching it until I read the book 😅 As always, an amazing reaction and I can't wait for the next one! Merry Christmas! ❤

@@SpacedOutPuffin i wrote a big comment about waiting to react to MDZS till after TGCF, outlining all the media that's available for MDZS and some trivia that should be exciting, under the vid that you discussed reacting to MDZS. the second comment was under this vid, not 20 mins into your upload. this is by no means an accusation or anything. if anything it's with YT's fault or my phone's. im just troubleshooting the basics before i go rage about my phone to myself. ill redo the MDZS comment cz it was enticing giving you motivation and future/further anticipation. you're the type of person i think we all want as irl friend to dissect these books ad nauseum. love ur reactions and freak outs. the fact that a good chunk of your theories or predictions are accurate is even more exciting. hope this is as awesome of an experience for you as it is for us

Maybe try drafting the comments in your notes app beforehand, just in case youtube eats it again? ;; Anyhow, I opened the filters and marked you as "always post from user" now so let's see if it helps! I'm grateful you're taking your time to rewrite it, I hope it works out this time! And yes, I'm having a great time, but I'm afraid I've done myself in by making myself wait instead of binging it all hahaha...
