Could tell how stressful and scary this is for everyone. Luckily prognosis is good, based on personal experience having all those issues and being a medical professional. 1. Clear up the h. pylori with antibiotics. Easy. 2. Take a daily PPI for the GERD. 40mg pantoprazole once/daily. Easy to get in the Philippines. 3. Cut back as much as possible on oily/fatty and spicy food. 4. Monitor stress and practice mindfulness techniques. That will take care of the biological and psychological causes and recovery should be swift within 1-2 months (with long term positive effects). Good luck 🍀

Jane's diagnosis is not as dramatic as you think. I'm a retired RN who had a similar diagnosis made when I was in my 30s, but I had gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and jejunal ulcers. a group of doctors decided that the best treatment was to remove my stomach. I refused, I said treat the H. pylori and treat the gerd but leave my stomach. I'm now 72 years old with NO stomach problems. To treat the gerd, your doctor will prescribe medication that he may describe as antacids they aren't antacids, they are H2 blockers, to simplify the explanation, they reduce the production of acid, you do not want to eliminate acid production. AVOID antacids, they will neutralize all acid in the stomach and cause what's known as rebound acidity, making the situation worse. The diagnosis isn't great but it's not as bad as you think.

I'm a semi-retired cardiothoracic surgeon and I concur with you nurse Robin. Proton pump inhibitors are quite effective as well. I remember in the 1960's, 1970's and early 1980's hiatal hernia surgeries were not that effective. Many patients died within a year of surgery from complications of GERD. My mother had hiatal hernia surgery in 1976, at age 57, to repair a severely herniated flap and a perforation that had formed on her lower esophagus from Barrett's esophagus. The refluxed acid had dripped from the perforation and scared her left lung tissue. Her incision went from her sternum, under her left breast crease to just below her left scapula. They broke two ribs to perform the repair and severed a nerve which regrew over 6 months. It took her 3 months to feel better and about a year to be pain free from the procedure. The surgical procedure was performed by a young cardiothoracic surgeon that had just learned a new technique for my mother's type of medical issues. My mother lived until 97 years old with no further reflux issues or pain. That's 40 years of extended life. Without the surgery she was given a year to live. My mother also had a history of bleeding ulcers from 18 until 28. I thought you might find her scenario interesting. Certainly glad to hear you are doing well.

Her diet is as good as possible. The H Pylori can be treated but her Grade D GERD cannot. It is too far gone now but can be kept at bay with lifestyle changes. Her esophagus shows signs of change with discolouration. We though are still confident we can find ways for her to live a normal and healthy life 😊

I made my comment as short as I could, but my story also extends for years and I only encountered treatment when my ex-wife tricked me to go to a hospital to visit our friend the president of the hospital. This was after multiple bouts of vomiting blood, both coffee grounds and bright red, bright red indicates esophageal involvement. My point is , your still far from Doom and Gloom, stay positive. Hi Adam & Jane, Just wanted to say that we know what it's like to have this kind of diagnosis. My wife Lorna who's from Samar was diagnosed with almost the exact same things that Jane has, when she was 41 back in the USA. She just celebrated her 70th birthday just a couple days ago. She does takie medication for the GERD and she watches what she eats and she also does alot of herbal meds like malungay and etc. We're enjoying our life here in the Philippines and always positive. She gets a check up every year back in the states, but for the past 30 yrs, has lived a rather nornal life. Enjoy life and stay strong and positive and I'm sure she'll be just fine. We found that with the GERD, it's best not to sleep flat while sleeping but to use pillows to elevate a little to help prevent the acid from coming up.at night.

My mother always had hand made 3 and 1/2 inch high wooded blocks with a slight indentation in the center placed under the floor footings of her headboard to raise her head and thorax at a higher tilt angle than her hips to prevent any reverse acid flow while sleeping. Sometimes she used a sleeping wedge cushion on the mattress or under it. An adjustable bed is also an option. I'm sure you know this already. Where are you located in the Philippines. That acid coming from stomach is more powerful than the bleach, that's why it will burn or damage the surrounding tissues of the esophagus that will eventually cause Cancer to some people.

I am positive Jane will overcome all this. My uncle has hiatal hernia and he's 85yrs old, never had it operated, he has GERD, he used to take proton pump inhibitors like Prevacid, Prilosec and now he would take Gaviscon when needed. Lifestyle change is a must, avoid food that triggers acid reflux, sleep with your head elevated a bit, go on your left side. I myself have Laryngophareangal reflux which my doc says is more serious than Gerd so I need to be more cautious with what I eat. Hang in there Jane all will be well.

Pylori being treated it will reduce the risk of ulcers and ultimately the possibility of cancer cells in the future. I also suffered from Gerd for many years. Proton inhibitors didnt really help that much in my case. I always had visits at the ER. Eventually, I learned to live with it and it was more of a lifestyle change - avoided triggers like citrus fruits, coffee, regular exercise, and tried to stay calm most times since I get attacks when anxious or under stressful situations. I also slept on elevated head or on my left side.

I was diagnosed with GERD too in 2020. I had it bad then and was prescribed meds that I never took. I changed my diet gradually since, along with exercise and daily meditation. My symptoms seem to have gone away without me noticing. Still, it's best to take health matters seriously. Most of all keep your spirit high, my friend. My best.✌

I feel for Jane as I have struggled with the same ailment for years. I was initially diagnosed by my ENT, based on my symptoms of persistent cought and sore throat, with GERD in 2009. An endoscopy conducted by a gastroenterologit sometime in 2014 confirmed I had GERD and H pylori bacteria in my gut. I guess, after 15 years my immune system has fully adapted to all the evils of GERD I am now 76 and have been largely symptoms free for the past 2-3 years. I can now eat and drink almost anything except alcohol. For as long as one follows diet restricions and take the medications there will alsways be a light at the end of tunnel and I expect Jane to get well; and BTW just an opinion. this is not a life threatening ailment so relax.

Righto! Mate I first found out I had a hiatus hernia 25 years or so ago. Not a problem at all. These things are important, as taught to me by my brilliant 80 year old GP at the time: Do NOT drink fluid for 30 minutes before eating. Chew the shit out of food so it passes easily through the belly into the intestine and on its way - without producing excess acid. And do NOT drink for an hour after eating. Never lie down for an hour or two after eating or there will be reflux, and with reflux comes damage and long term risk. I recently developed a Gastric ulcer. My lazy eating and drinking habits re-surfacing. . But I take two Somac tablets 12 hours apart daily- and a slurp of Gaviscon LIQUID can be gold. Avoid the irritating foods that can agitate the oesophagus or stomach ( Chilli is bad for me- but big unchewed chunks of meat is the worst) . Eat small meals more often. Never eat til full. And drink a shitload of water during the day. Not in big gulps…. Just continually sipping. Maybe not quite the same issue as Jane, but these are sound belly protecting principles to follow. Has served me very well.

I had similar for 2years went hospital in uk done blood tests x rays urine tests, nothing showed and went home, they put down to anxiety, went to my doctor I really thought I had cancer or a heart attack the pain was unbearable when it came on chest was tight couldn’t concentrate couldn’t do nothing, my Gp prescribed lansoprazole tablets from the very first tablet it cleared and got better and now I’ve fully recovered after a 2months taking the tablets. Treatment for gurd acid reflux ulcers this does the lot. Sure Jane has the same issues.

Yes I’m dealing with that now and I need to quit eating then going to bed, take anti acid meds right now, stay safe and active always
