my own luck has been backwards recently, getting 3 Poison Staffs in 90 seconds (i was only looking for the Stylist), as well as getting an Unholy Trident and Magma Stone (shimmer to Lava Charm for Terraspark) on my first Red Devil and Hellbat kills respectively at the beginning of what i expected to be a long grind. Meanwhile, it took me over 24 playtime hours to get three Shiny Red Balloons for the horseshoe bundle

I've never used it before, but suffice it to say that my current Expert Mode Mage Run will not bring me to the point of fishing... because your videos really are a great reference guide for weapons progression. The only Magic Weapon that convinced me to deviate from the Summoner and hybridize it with the Mage was the Life Drain, and that was on Expert Mode. In my Classic Mode Mage Run, I picked the Corruption, so the Life Drain wouldn't break progression... and I don't exactly regret it, because the Sky Fracture is way more fun, but in this "Drunk World Expert Mage Run", I... Well, I picked both via '05162020' seed. So far, I beat WoF after 6 -normal- attempts with the Flamelash, Demon Scythe, and Flower of Fire. The mage is the most frustrating for me, because I am terrible at rapid dodge/aim. As a Summoner, I can sweep the area while focusing on dodging, and that got me to the end of 'getfixedboi' Legendary Mode, even making Legendary Mode EoL easier to dodge than Duke Fishron whilst riding a Golf Cart. I've already calculated my course in progression, what to do, how to do it, all in the space of 3 minutes.

I think the problem with the Crystal Serpent is its rarity and the problem with fishing. It does make me wish there were some rods in Vanilla that had 2 or more fishing rods at a time to make the grind less tedious (similarly to how Calamity does for some rods)

I feel like the main benefit of Crystal serpent is how consistent the damage and accuracy is for single target to be fair, I find meteor staff and sky fracture weird to aim with so having something more like the guns where it's just point and click helps to make bosses easier I found. Also it's a pretty good Duke tier skip I'm pretty sure, it does a really good job at killing the bubbles and the damage is good for the fight.

The Crystal Serpent feels less like something you try for, and more of a happy accident to pick up when doing your early hardmode fishing. It's useful for surviving early hardmode, and it's super safe to get, but you don't really want to use it for too long.

I get quite a few of these because whenever there’s a blood moon, I almost always go to an ocean (the hallowed one) to fish for blood moon stuff. I do catch some of these and they’re honestly a source of money lol

Hey, a lot of creators can't stand watching their own videos. If you can, it's a great way to see them through your audience's perspective. The Crystal Serpent is pretty great in tight quarters, especially early hardmode cave exploration. The shattering projectile fans out around corners, which cannot be said for the other two. Although, Cursed Flames isn't much harder to get for more reliability.

Despite how much I love crystal serpent, the low projectile velocity is actually painful for mech boss fights 😢 Especially when I try to fight the twins first, I had a really bad time hitting them when they are not dashing.

my recommendation for the next mage weapon review: flower of frost! im not sure how i did it, but i got it on the first few minutes of hardmode and it smoked everything up to the cultist. i think its better than most of the early hardmode mage weapons like fan favorite golden shower and sky fracture. its a bit slow but if you can aim it right on slightly fast bosses like the twins and queen slime i find it to be a killer. the only downside is the lack of piercing so its not great against the destroyer but the raw single target damage makes up for it

I don't think we need a Ranger class that is literally only different in what "ammo" is used. Just my personal opinion, but I imagine something like that is part of what Re-Logic was thinking when designing the Mage class.

The crystal serpent is extremely strong considering its mana cost, compared to every weapon showed here, you can definitely skip using mana potions and therefore avoid the dps debuff on bosses with adds. This makes the fight against Plantera incredibly easier than vs mech bosses, and, in my mage playthroughs, I get through the mechs with other weapons, then go straight to plantera without life fruits or any armor upgrade beacuse it definitely can wreck her with "only" Adamantite/Titanium armor.

Please give the ghastly glave another shot, I found it incredibly useful against more spread out enemies underground. (It’s really really good underground since most enemies don’t have a lot of space to move and the projectiles spawn on enemies ignoring line of sight.) (I also found it fantastic during the early hard mode solar eclipse, and old ones army… literally any early hardmode situation that involves a lot of regular enemies.) (All of this was tested on legendary mode and it’s still slept on!)

The thing with the Crystal Serpent is that its potential damage per shot skyrockets agains enemies moving directly towards you, since they will run into the splitting shards for extra damage. Skeletron Prime, The Twins, Pre-Mech Duke Fishron and even Plantera take really high damage because of this. As you said in the video, the weapon does also perform fairly well against Queen Slime, but I agree that Meteor Staff is very much more consistent against it. It's also worth mentioning that this thing absolutely chews through Biome Mimics when they do their catch-up dash attack.

Crystal serpent seems best reserved for normal (low-mid hp) enemies, and leave the bosses to the life drain (or clinger as support in corrupted worlds) and meteor staff.
