I disagree with the statement that a computer couldn't play a MTG game optimally. I have more experience in MTG than most and have 10 of thousands of cards. I have been doing about 2 pre-releases for several years now and started in 4th edition though I read/knew about it before this. MTG has a finite number of cards and each format has various banned/restricted cards. Narrowing down the card pool total. Also powerful card interactions are known by the player base. A computer could give you the most optimal way to play a deck, in the possible future. But victory would not be certain.

One of the first green decks to do well in tournaments was named Stupid Green because other players couldn't believe they'd been beaten by a "stupid green deck" since it was almost universally acknowledged to be by far the worst color in the game. My favorite part about the Turing Machine list is that you literally have a winning boardstate on the very first turn when you pull the perfect opening hand. There is the old Gishki FTK in Yugioh which could take about 40 minutes to do their turn and defeat the opponent if they haven't surrendered, died of boredom, or they had enough disruption to stop the FTK and in turn win because that deck had no plan B.

Kyle, that was an incredibly crazy game, and I loved that video! My longest game was a 2-headed giant commander game on Aug. 31, 2019 when there was an ALMOST infinite combo that required my friend and I to calculate the combat damage for two and a half hours, ending with 7.2249x10^54 combat damage in one completely legal combat step. I made sure to take a picture of the board state, as well as the two whiteboards we were using to make sure our damage calculation formula (yes, we had to make a formula to simplify it) was correct and accounting for all the damage. I love Magic :)

Small correction to that opening story: no, the "close door" buttons weren't kept on elevators just to give people the "illusion of control", they're still required to close the door when the elevator is in non-standard operating modes, such as independent service or fire mode. When the elevator is operating under normal circumstances though, yeah, in most cases they're a "placebo button" that does absolutely nothing.

@@VexxJacobs How so? I just started arena 2 weeks ago, not paid a single cent, and in my first 4 days got up to gold tier in ranked standard. Haven't even used any of my wildcards yet because I'm afraid I'll waste them and immediately have a better idea for a different deck. Season just ended 2 days ago and just got up to gold tier again just tonight. Plenty of time yet so I'm hoping to get to as higher tier. Not saying you're wrong about it being rigged, but I don't see it. Real cards though is definitely rigged pay to win, if you don't buy a bunch of uber cards you can't compete at all in a serious competition.

Elevators build little over a year ago at my work have the button and actually do work. Not just the Fire elevator. Normally they close in about 4-6 seconds. But when you get in and press the button the door shuts immediately after pressing the button. I've tried this and you can do it in 2 seconds including stepping in (fast). But this probably depends on the country, manufacturer and regulations. I'm from The Netherlands BTW.

I'm pretty sure, that the "close the door" buttons do work, just there is a "minimum time" that the door must be open for handicapped. The elevator may keep it open longer and the "close the door" button only works after that minimum wait time.

@@becausescience I disagree. If you created a universal dominoes machine that could calculate from any instance all the fallout that would take place for next hour from that point in the universe, you could totes do it. It would be a prediction machine, calculating probability based on the mechanics of our dimension. It's definitely something that'll be attempted. WE won't see it, but in about... i dunno, 40.000 years, 100.000 years, our descendants (assuming they're still around) might have something like that. Then you'd be able to account for every possible play and every possible card from any deck configuration ever and find not only the optimal deck, but also the optimal game. It would take all the fun out of it. So I'm glad I'm not living then. That would be boring.

The door close buttons in elevators still serve a functional purpose, just not in the standard operating mode. Elevators have additional operating modes, like attendant mode, where the hallway call buttons do nothing, firefighter mode, and a mode for elevator maintenance technicians. These alternate modes give the person operating the elevator greater control, and it is in some of these modes that the door close button becomes active.
