It's intimidating being a beginner

You’d feel right at home here: Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are also nice and gusty. It’s all we’ve got though, so no reason to let that spoil our sessions.

Kiting is an incredible sport. Learning on land is incredibly dangerous though, it’s worth highlighting. Even for an experienced kiter, the most dangerous part of the sport is often launching, landing, and getting from land to the water. You noted how gusty and inconsistent the wind is. That’s due like you said to all the trees/obstacles that the wind has to go around. There’s many stories from the pioneers of the sport of people getting severely injured and worse on land partly due to poor gear but also to not knowing any better. We’re lucky to have more knowledge now. In this video there’s several times where the kite was nearly dead downwind on the ground or the launcher was getting blown over by the kite (kiter is too far upwind when launching). If you’re not going to invest in lessons to learn safely, I’d *at least* go check out kitesurf college. I cannot stress enough that videos aren’t a replacement for lessons, but something is better than nothing. For your own safety, those around you, and your local kite community, I’d recommend lessons. Your first time should not be on land. You should probably not get used to feeling safe throwing your kite in the power zone while on land. You live because you went in such low wind that you could do even very unsafe stuff and not die. Get an actual lesson. Not only for you, but also so local government doesn't ban the sport.

Not everyone has the same ability to travel and get lessons. Also we thought out all the precautions. But I appreciate the comment and agree if you have the time and money definitely get professional lessons. This was a friend helping a friend!
