I saw this movie about a month ago on a recommendation. It's an excellent movie and reminds us what it is to be a real man. One that has purpose, quiet confidence, keeps his promises and shows up when the chips are down. He also doesn't argue to get his point across, doesn't defend himself when wrongfully attacked. He simply demonstrates real character through his purposeful and committed actions. Not easy to do, but definitely someone to aspire to be. Definitely recommend this movie.

Superb movie that I always try & watch whenever it’s aired on TV. Everything about it works… from the high contrast monochrome cinematography to Gary Cooper’s remarkable performance - surely one of his best. The way the tension builds as the minutes tick down to ‘High Noon’ is testament to director Fred Zinnemann’s genius. Thank goodness John Wayne turned down the lead role!

Good commentary, but you failed to bring out one very particularly important point that is brought out in the movie and Kane explains it to his new wife when they turn around and go back. This wasn't just about Kane returning to the town to face down Miller because he was a man and knew the town wouldn't - it was also personal. He knew that Miller had a personal grudge to come after the men who had put him away. This is one of the reasons you also see the judge hastily leaving town early on. When his wife begs him to leave and that they can get away and go somewhere that Miller can't find them, Kane tells her that he can't have that hanging over him for the rest of his life - and that Miller will try to find him. SO it's better to go back and face him (Judgement Day) rather than waiting for it to happen at some other place and time - suddenly and unexpectedly - later when he is not aware and cannot control the situation. This is a key motivator for Kane's actions in the movie. I know you said you didn't want to spoil the movie, but another key point is that a man must choose his friends carefully, because a major theme here is that all of the many people who were supposed to be his friends - were not there to support him in that "life and death" situation when he needed them most. Only one person had his back - one - and saved his life - and I won't spoil who it was. I can say from experience that I have had real high noon situations in my own life - and you find out who your real friends are when you go through those times. I can count my true friends on one hand.

Kane also knew that many in the town resented Kane "cleaning up" the town. Miller and his brother had drinking, gambling and whoring friends in that town who missed things being a little wild at times yet hired Kane to make it a "decent" town. The lesson to me is be careful to not do your job too well. There may be deep resentment in the results.
@egee.sheeva66724 жыл бұрын
Quite true, but the true theme is the macrocosm one, and the great screen writer knew that. That is why the Miller character is the Biden-throw-back, one who IS RELEASED from prison having not served sentence, i.e. Biden and son for $-laundering, embezzling and blackmail to self-serve his corrupt and rotten family. Biden using his own son, Hunter, as a bag man to sell-out the USA. Trump is the heart-light sent to destroy Biden, the corruption of an entire nation with his Master Puppeteers.

I was reading this about CS Lewis from Surprised by Joy and I consider it is pertinent: His conversion from Theism to Christianity is not described as “emotional”: ‘It was more like when a man, after long sleep, still lying motionless in bed, becomes aware that he is now awake. And it was, like that moment on top of the bus, ambiguous. Freedom, or necessity? Or do they differ in their maximum? At that maximum a man is what he does; there is nothing of him left over or outside the act.’ At that maximum a man is what he does.

Kane returns to Hadleyville, not because of his estimation of the shortcomings of the townspeople, but because he knows that Frank Miller will pursue him, and he'll be out there on the prairie alone without a gun, unable to defend himself. In the film, there's never a strong indication that Kane is acting on behalf of the citizens, nor are they willing to act on his or their own behalf. Of course, it's long been understood that the film is an allegory for the McCarthy years in the United States. Kane is isolated and abandoned, not by the thugs coming to kill him (the House Committee on Un-American Activities), but by the friends and colleagues who desperately want to avoid being drawn into the battle. Carl Foreman, the author of the script, was blacklisted. Though he was put in the position of presenting the best actor Oscar to Gary Cooper, the arch-conservative John Wayne always objected to the film. It may seem that I'm taking serious exception to the narration. I'm not. It's really quite good and admirable.
