Anyone found a way to get these to the UK at sensible price? I tried to order but the shipping was as much as the two straps I wanted to buy, which is a bit eye-watering. I guess I could make some for myself, but I'd happily support Dev and RTT if there's a way to do it...

Mr Ollam, If you need us to get in, we will get in. Sincerely, All Truckies (aka firefighters on the truck) They're use irons (haligan & flathead axe) to force the door or if that's not working, there's always a K12 (gas powered circular saw) which can cut the door in half. Moral of the story, if you need help you'll get it.

Our house caught fire yesterday morning, and I'll just say my recent experience matches this person's statement. We even let our firemen right in and they *still* used their halligans to smash multiple gaping holes in just about every room they entered, lol! Granted, I'm assuming they did what they felt was necessary. Also, forgive the dark humor, it's my coping mechanism... Back on topic, love the straps @DeviantOllam!

Just out of curiousity... What kind of firefighters aren't "truckies?" Like, when I encounter firefighters, they are all on the truck (or, you know, clearly rode the truck to get here and are now on the sidewalk/roof/whatever). Does the aid car not count? Is there a secret stash of backup firefighters who just hang out at the station? Is this "truckies" as opposed to wilderness firefighters, maybe?
@EyeKnowRaff
@EyeKnowRaff 3 ай бұрын
@@trioptimum9027 Truckies ride the ladder truck (often shorted to just 'truck'). A ladder truck is characterized as having a big ladder mounted to it (with or without a platform) in a mid or rear mount or as a tiller (the one with the guy steering in the cab on the back). They don't have their own water source or pump. If there is no mounted ladder it's probably called an engine (there are some ground ladders on it just not the big mounted type). Ladder truck companies (the term of the mouthbreating, ape like animals and apparatus collectively) are typically tasked with forced entry, ventilation, and technical rescue. Meanwhile, engine companies are typically tasked with interior fire attack, rescue, paramedic level care, and stealing your girl (or guy, no judgement). There are "brush trucks" which are usually heavy duty pickup trucks with some suppression equipment for wildland fires (characterized by the distinct lack of structures). Then there's wildland engines which are your typical engine but build to go off road. This is, of course, strictly about the US fire service as the European model scares most US firefighters. Europe just does things differently from the US. Does this make sense?

With regards to the health / emergency response stuff; there are absolutely incapacitating events, injuries and so on that could allow you to call for help but be immobilised. But that doesn't render a product like this dangerous or irresponsible. You're a free individual with agency and a right to choose what you do in your own private spaces and how you restrict access to those spaces. If you think the chance of an incapacitating medical emergency is a risk you personally don't want to take, don't use it. The way I see it, my home is protected to the degree that I personally can not break in without a lot of destruction and setting off all the alarms. Most people wouldn't leave their home insecure just because they might have a medical event; why would you with a hotel room? Myself, I'm pretty unhealthy and I do need to ensure someone can gain access in an emergency. I wouldn't use this without a careful risk / benefit assessment. That doesn't make it a bad product, it makes it unsuitable for me.

I have some health stuff which might make this ...inadvisable..., but also if I can call 911, I can tell them to break down the door with the axe or climb through the window. Sure, it might take the truck instead of the medical taxi, but that's where the risk profile comes in. In most places, they come from the same place anyways.

As for the fireman excuses, I thought that they tend to have their own "override keys" in the form of an axe and other such entry tools.

Using the ***Ultimate Override Keys*** with excessive gusto tends to generate more than its fair share of paperwork. The less destructive methods can often be faster if they're immediately available. But, if the less destructive methods don't work due to stuff getting disabled with things like this strap, a set of irons will still take care of these doors.

Generally, if you are more concerned about the "good guys" not being able to get to you to help you than the "bad guys" being able to get in, you should go with less security (or security the "good guys" can override). So just like Dev said, if you are more scared of medical assistance not being able to get to you than you are scared of people breaking in, then don't use this security-increasing strap. If you want more security, than use it!

These look like fantastic tools that work very well. When you mentioned the anonymity / plausible deniability need it got me thinking, with a few design tweaks you could turn these into functional NATO-style watch straps. If someone used cordage like braided dyneema/microcord/paracord, it could be disguised and worn as a bracelet in plain sight. Hair ties or scrunchies could make a good potential disguise, and I imagine one could improvise such a device using athletic sweat bands, tourniquets, or even shoelaces and hoodie drawstrings if you use the right knots. Awesome stuff as always, Mr. Ollam.

Well done sir, you had be giggling like a loon both watching the videos, and reading the comments. As for people being afraid of help not getting to them, in the words of one of my senior ( security) techs ... " and if not, oh well, I have a grandmaster key * holds up a grinder*". My days in dispatch make me very certain both fireies and ambos are even more willing to enter with force

'travel TIP' the Deadbolt Straps Can be used on beltloops of pants. Also keep the slack to the back of pants. Just say they are 'keep pants looking nice and neat.' I did make my own Deadbolt Straps without the nylon wedding. Sometime I'll get around to buying real Deadbolt Straps.

The only verifiable reason I can think of for why someone wouldn’t want to use one of these is in case of some fire or emergency - and that this could prevent you from (easily) leaving the room. Still, I think that for the vast majority of people: some quick practice and repetition would solve that problem. I have one of these per a previous video you made - I love it

I finally found a lock this won't work on...In Italy, in a hotel there was a lock where you turn the inside thumb turn to engage the deadbolt, but unlocking with their 'key' (i.e. someone's lockpick?) from the outside, unlocks the dead bolt but the inside thumb turn never turns. They must've seen this video!! lol. Like I said before, love mine, bring it every time I travel. Just brought it with me and used it on a cruise ship. Always pack this, some 'tools' (check laws in the country you are traveling) and my personal CO monitor. You'd be shocked how many times it registers CO-pool heaters in warmer climates, and the back of a cruise ship can be problematic, if not deadly.

Belt or strap around the door closer arm works pretty well in a pinch. After that problem is solved is the issue with any between in-room connections. Nice thing about purpose-made products, though, is they tend to be much more reliable than improvised tools.

I use one of the OG blue straps which I honestly feel is pretty sufficient, but I do pair it with a door wedge alarm that has both light and sound. That door wedge can do a lot of other cool things too, but that's not a conversation for the internet.

Too often I see really cool pride stuff, buy a few and then *even* more drops (like this) and I have to hope it either stays for a while longer while I gather up money or hope next year they have the same ones. Any plans for further pride themed stuff in other categories?

My personal philosophy about door security, if someone wants to get inside, they'll find a way to accomplish that, regardless how destructive it ends up being. With this in mind however, that deadbolt strap is a nifty thing to have on hand at a hotel!

Far from new or secret and you don't even need a tool. Something close to 40 years ago on a family trip with a pair of adjoining rooms my family managed to flip the privacy lock and lock ourselves out of one of the rooms. The front desk clerk popped it open in seconds with a bent up hanger.

Nightlatch popper can be improved with two key cards and some tape. LP gets really good at it quick. Though if someone wants in, a shoulder into the door rips them right out (unless installed with sex bolts) Merry-yacht safelok thumb turn is just a electric switch, deadbolt is always out when door is closed. Rad designs on the merch.

Also wondering this. Can't think of nefarious things that other velcro straps or even more common zip ties couldn't do. And maybe you could pass the pride or rainbow straps off plainly as a wristband of support, bag strap, or hook a Keychain through the notch for the deadbolt latch like a key strap.
