I am a long term Nightwish fan "Ocean" is my number one song of their whole repertoire. Just a magnificent piece of music and story telling.

The "Lords of a single fly" is referring to the book "Lord of the Flies" (check how Tuomas is playing with the words), about stranded boys on an island with a bad ending. The counterpart on this album is "The Children Of Ata" where teenage boys fromTonga also shipwrecked on an island for 15 month in 1965, but with a good ending.

I think the part: "Friends that were for a time, now grapes of sour wines, lords of a single fly" is about Tarja, and maybe Anette? "You who glow in deepest woe, let it be, retiree, the water's fine, sail carefree," I believe is about Marco.

@@Cherlindrea99 "Here, raining Ash to cover the dead, an island of the past wrecks, of you" - i think that would be about Tarja, or it's Tuomas calling himself a wreck in the aftermath of Tarja drama

Great reaction for the fantastic song! You never know where the Nightwish's stories guide you to. At first glance it looks like a stormy, piratical song, but the lyrics are much more meaningful and layered than they seem. They give you a clue in the first verse: "A few decades of immortality ahead. A one-man crew for a one-way trip". What is this if not the story of a person's life? With this in mind the whole song will play with new colors. I think you will love The Children of ’Ata of the same album. Knowing the story behind it brings a lot of new sense to the song.

I remember hearing somewhere that Tuomas called "The Greatest Show on Earth" his magnum opus, but I'm not convinced that he's peaked yet. Nightwish keeps getting better.

Good idea to start with the Nightwish Yesterwynde official full album! Next: the video clip of this song! Tuomas dedicated a few lines to Marco Hietala who left the band as you know: You who glow In deepest woe Let it be, retiree, The water's fine Sail carefree

Are you a Rugby fan? "Children of 'Ata" has a Tongan choir, with a chant. Floor in Northward? Tuomas déjà vu themes. Did you catch the shout-outs? Verse 1 “A Mariner under a sky Moonlit” [GLS?] “Crewless ship” [The Islander? “Shipless crew”, Yesterwynde] A "Siren"? “A few decades” [Endlessness?] “A one-man crew for a one-way trip” [The Islander?] “Every shore I land”, (A painter, on the shore). [Storytime, Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean?] “Steep cliffs” Where the cliff greets the sea... [Élan?] "Not Waving but Drowning" is a poem by Stevie Smith. More Metal, old skool! Verse 2 “Jokers, jesters” [Raving harlequins, gigantic toys? Tricksters, magicians: Last Ride Of The Day?] “Goddesses, hominidae” Floor, humans. “Deep delicious blue beneath” [TPATP, H:||:N: The Blue] “Light a homefire for the sad man with a begging hand” [Song of Myself?] "Bring Me to Life"! [For the Reactors! Don't mention "Eva…”. Also Élan] “Dancing, in the daylight” [Dancing in the dark?] “Saaail and seeeek!” [Hide and seek] Calling you, calling me [sounds like Northward] To be a part of your story [Never Ending Story?] Those smiles, grins, and air drums! Is it building? Ominous horns Verse 3 “Raining ash” [Pompeii?] "An island of past wrecks"; The Antikythera mechanism (the next track). “Endless sundown” [Sleeping Sun?] “Meadows” [Of Heaven?] “Mirrors, mirrors, everywhere” [Noise? The Black Mirror] "Mad despair!” [Scaretale!] "Friends, who were for a time Now grapes of sour wine” [Sour grapes is a phrase that means acting meanly after a disappointment. An idiom that means being angry or resentful because you have not achieved something you wanted.] “Lords of a single fly” [Lord of the Flies, William Golding, Children of 'Ata didn't regress, they "Were here!"] "Let it be"... [Nice reference to Abbey Road Studios] Film scores (Tuomas and Floor both like the music of Hans Zimmer). “Saaaaail and Seeeeek!” As John Wick once said: “Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back!" That was crunchy and chunky... Is it over? "That was awesome" "Titanic" vibes from Troy, letting his Uilleann pipes speak across the centuries. How does it have that effect on us? The calm after the storm. Yes, go back!

It wouldn't be Tuomas if he didn't use poetic language and you have to google at least 2 words every song. lol. I sometimes wonder if his lyrics will be read 200 years from now by poetry fans. Or will they only talk about artists like The Beatles and Queen. It's a funny thing to think about, what people will talk about centuries from now when they talk about culture and art from our time.
