It's Little Richard. 1964 UK TV Show

Recorded in Manchester, UK in November 1963 when Little Richard was invited into the Granada TV studios to tape this special while headlining a UK tour featuring, amongst others The Everly Brothers and a virtually unknown band at the time called The Rolling Stones.
Probably the best live performance ever recorded. Commencing with a storming version of William tell overture by Sounds Incorporated, Little Richard then opens with Rip It Up, after which The Shirelles sing two numbers and then join with Richard for the gospel number Joy, Joy, Joy.
Part 2 is all Little Richard, getting more frantic with each number as he storms through Lucille and Long Tall Sally. The soulful, Send Me Some Lovin' follows before Richard sets the studio alight with, Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On, Hound Dog, Good Golly Miss Molly, Tutti frutti, and finishing with a stomping version of Jenny Jenny.
Originally transmitted on 8th Jan 1964.
Enjoy.

I wonder if any of the Beatles, Robert Plant, David Bowie or any of the other countless British musicians who admired and site Little Richard as a major influence were in the crowd during this performance? Never has one musician influenced so many, yet received so little recognition for it as Little Richard has.

I believe the Brits were the first to welcome black artists. They recognize great talent. Please Mr. Postman was first sang by the Shirelles and then the Beatles really made it a hit. Sad though many black arts were ripped off when it came to doling out the cash. Brunswick Label in the US (a recording label) ripped off artists big time. Jackie Wilson made them millions and when he died he had no health insurance, no headstone for his grave. It was truly sad what happened to him.

Rock 'n' Roll doesn't get any better than this. I saw Richard and Sounds Inc. several times on stage in the UK and they were fantastic. At one stage Richard pretended to faint and collapsed on the floor. The Safety Curtain was lowered. Announcements were made to enquire if there was a doctor in the house. When the Safety Curtain was lifted Richard suddenly jumped off the floor and roared into 'Good Golly Miss Molly'. He then announced 'You think we're tired - well we haven't started yet". They don't make entertainers like that anymore.

I'm back again, this show is incredible, I'll always keep watching it. Little Richard puts so much joy into it, this is the best Rock n Roll of all, the real nitty-gritty stuff. Little Richard was my dad's favourite artist. Dad used to throw the collywobbles at my choice of music. "Turn that bloody racket down!" I was listening to metal. Overkill by Motorhead always was played at full blast. Now that (former Hendix roady, Hawkwind bassist and founder of Motorhead) Lemmy has died. I decided to watch Lemmy, The Movie. Surprise surprise!!. Listed amongst Lemmy's heroes and inspirations was L R. Along with Jerry Lee, Elvis and The Beatles. Lemmy always signed off a show with Overkill. The shows finale; but before that inimitable, ball busting double bass drum and Lemmy's rickenbacker bass thundered in, he would always say " Thank-you, good night. We are Motorhead and we play rock and roll" Long live rock n roll! This show was filmed in Manchester too. The greatest city in Britain. Sod London!!!

I saw him live about 12 years ago . Best performer I ever saw and the nicest. He came outside and signed autographs and talked with everyone after for as long as it took. I'd been to that venue a lot and never saw anyone else that genuine. He also brought a box of prayer books for anyone to take free who wanted one. And the administrators of the venue said he was very easy to work with. (Unlike Diana Ross who was one of the worse)

Great music, mind blowing performer ...the man built rock music. Yet I find your comments pretty funny. Penniman was a very heavy drinker and at time a coke addict. And you're extremely naive thinking drugs were not part of the lives of musicians and some of their followers in 1964. Your comment that music today lacks excitement is farcical beyond compare, and leads me to ask when the last time was you attended a concert by musicians born subsequent to say 1985. I'm an old guy of 60 and I get it. Too bad as it seems you once loved modern music and have missed out on so much great stuff overt he decades.

What a performance! One of the great live performers, one of the Greats, whose career encompassed fine early 50's Jump Blues/R&B, R n' R, Gospel and Soul-his mid-60's Okeh sides have rightly enshrined him for all-time as a Northern Soul hero here in the UK,just as his 50's Specialty /UK London classics made him a hero of the Teddy Boys. An all-time hero to both the Teds and the Soulies-not many could claim that! We'll always love you Richard-thanks for the music.RIP Incidentally at 16.37 we see Jimmy Savile (cringe) and sweet Jenny Moss (Coronation Street actress and Joe Meek recording artist) and at 21.43 them again, dancing with (right) Jenny's Coronation Street co-star Chris Sandford ,who was, also,a short-lived Pop star at this time

I watch Little Richard doing Whole Lot of Shakin' and I am just swept away with the song, always leaves a smile on my face. The backing band are having as much fun as the audience! Good music never dies and what an entertainer he was. Love it.

I watched him live in The Domino Club on Grey Mare Lane Manchester twice, both times the audience would not let him off the stage, I later seen him in two other Venues in Manchester, he was magic & will never be matched as an entertainer & great musician.

I've never been a concert goer but I really do feel I missed seeing a legends performance, even in his later years. He didnt care what others thought, just living his life, as everyone should. RIP Little Richard. 8-)

One of the best, if not the best, doing what he does and what he did. There are no words to describe it. You had to see it and hear it. One of the most underrated performers of all time. Richard, you were in a class by yourself. A performance you cannot forget. Thank you for posting this. I can't get enough. THE BEST.

Thank you so much for posting this rare gem. In essence, seeing this for the first time for us, would have been not unlike how the Animals, Stones, Beatles etc first saw him. In other words, this performance IS what they saw, and you can appreciate how much of an impact he had on the future of British rock. This can't be stressed enough. What an utterly fantastic, pure unadulterated performance/ entertainer. (whether it's his angelic voice, his jumping up and down, or his mad, mad, mad tectonic piano playing. holy shit! (PS: I met Little Richard years ago, he's such a sweet and funny guy).
