Counter-Strike, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Xonotic, Warsow, Toxikk, Reflex Arena, Diabotical, various battle royales(not counting the ones where you need to grind for new classes), Tetris, roguelikes, etc. The gameplay is just there, ready for you to jump into a match and be equal to everyone else - no need to grind for hours a day to get the better cards, classes, weapon loadouts, and whatever new reason to grind that AAA companies can think of.

That's not the actual problem. Ideally, think of it as this: Normal Price = Good Game at good pace, 20-30 hours of gameplay on main satisfying storyline. AND Higher Price = Almost the same good Game at faster pace, 7-10 hours gameplay, you would finish the story it in the same amount of days as a person who plays it normally, instead of never because you lack the time and motivation for it. The higher prices also causes more motivation because "you spent so much on it, you gotta at least finish it". So a normal person has the good game as it's desgined. A busy person has a "cheats enabled" rush version that satisfies them sufficiently, for a higher price as an option. See any problem with this, honestly? I know it's the opposite in the real world, but what about what I said?

It sucks because it's a shallow live service cash grab, so of course it was going to. Besides which, Bethesda has bungled the launch of that game in 10 different ways and had the audacity to add a $100 subscription when the game was barely playable as it was. They deserve all the hate they're getting. Kaboom Baby I wouldn’t even call them robots. It’s an algorithm, or series of algorithms. There’s nothing intelligent or predictable about them, and they don’t follow any form of strict rules or predictable patterns the way a standard, cold hearted automaton is portrayed as doing. Algorithms control WAY more than people realize (see the entire stock market) but the inherent issue with algorithms is that they are, by nature, unpredictable. The point of using algorithms is to take a lot of input, fiddle it about, and dump some new output. The problem is that algorithms are not something you can look at, and predict the outcome of. It’s not an equation, where you can ballpark the part after the equals sign. There will always be fringe outputs based on chance percentages and unlikely scenarios. Pricing algorithms do really weird stuff sometimes, like price used copies way higher than new copies, or randomly increase the sales price of an innocuous book by $12,000 dollars for a few hours. Because any parameter possible by the algorithm has the possibility of happening. Maybe KZbin never expected it to come across a channel and somehow interpret that channel as impersonating itself... because frankly, why would you ever expect that outcome? The problem isn’t that KZbin is being stupid and are actively allowing this stuff to happen. The problem is that using unpredictable algorithms to drop the guillotine at the first sign of any algorithmically perceived issue means you’re at the whim of obscure and unknowable outcomes, where weird shit like CGP impersonating himself will sometimes be an acceptable and rational conclusion for said algorithm. Instead of proactively approaching these issues by having the algorithm merely flag issues, and having a real live person verify the issue before action is taken, KZbin has implemented a reactive approach, where a person only steps in after someone has complained about the algorithm fucking up. And even then, I don’t always feel like every issue is checked by a real live person, I feel like it’s gotta be run through some algorithms again, and if they generally perceive the violation to be upheld, it never makes it to a real person’s queue. Like, at least with a robot, you have cold predictable outcomes. It’s programmed to do XYZ, and barring something obscure like floating point errors or incorrect coding, it is expected to just coldly and automatically perform XYZ. Algorithms aren’t even able to predict the outcome of other algorithms. They’re practically RNG at this point. They’re like the quantum mechanics of math. Their job is to weigh to importance of a set of variables and come to some final conclusion about what all those variables mean... but in actuality, they’re just taking a whole lot of numbers and assigning those numbers new numbers and then shuffling those numbers around based on some other set of numbers and then comparing those new numbers to these new numbers and depending on how close those numbers are, it comes with this other set of numbers that are each assigned to these various action outputs provided the ending output numbers meet or exceed the thresholds set for the actions to be taken. And all that whackiness is just what they do conceptually. What they actually do is probably fucking bonkers in comparison 🤣

Mind you, I'm in England, where ESO dropped in price so hard and fast it's quite easy to feel benevolent about them providing so much for £15, and for some reason it's remained at something very close to $60 in America all these years later. Anyhow the fact they then took ESO's sub, which has years of context and content, which even if you're absolutely not on board with, it still has SOMETHING they can point at and say "this here, we added some new countries, pay us," and plonked it onto Fallout 76, where it means nothing and offers nothing, is fucking hilarious to me

The end goal of any successful business is to become a monopoly in the field they distribute in. They will, without fail, fight tooth and nail to press the reasons for why this is right for them and their consumers suffer the consequences of rent seeking behaviors, increasingly worse services, arbitrary pricing models, and ect. If they've the backing to do so, they will also go out of their way to deliberately collapse/absorb their competition as fast as they can, whether buy buying them out, gutting their access to distribute products (Think Disney's and Epic's models), in the end the people that lose out the most are always the end line consumers. You can see this behavior in any region with a sole provider of electricity/internet services/insurance providers/ect. Anything that starts behaving like a utility has jack and shit right to be privatized any more due to this tendency.

But that's not what's happening. You give them money, they make little to no effort to maintain the quality of the product, but still want more of your money. Fallout 76 is a perfect example. Now realize that dystopian story isn't just a story, but the world we live in. I work in agriculture and we have a subscription service analogue called CSA, or community supported agriculture. People pay in advance for weekly amounts of groceries over quarter-year periods and the farmers use the upfront money as capital for continuing to produce food. It actually works pretty well for both parties, and I wish video games could create an analogue for *benefitting both parties.*

Defending corporations nowadays feels like defending a violent alcoholic stepfather.
@stylesrj5 жыл бұрын
Thing is though, the violently alcoholic stepfather can and will probably break your kneecaps if you try to run away. So you best stick around and say he's right because you don't want to die. If you run away from a corporation, they can hardly bother with your existence in the first place?

Nowadays, player count means roughly Jack Shit. It’s the “Whales” that they care about exploiting.
@JimSterling5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it may very well be worth it. The whole "whale" thing is about making a ton of money off a few people. If they have fewer players, but those players pay more, then it might be worth alienating other portions of the audience. Now whether or not that's *sustainable*, that's another matter. It won't be for many games, I think. There's only room at the top for a few.
@julianbrewster46335 жыл бұрын
Of course it's worth it lol. Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten to this point in the industry. The lost sales is easily made up from thousands of monthly subscriptions.
@dirkmaes37865 жыл бұрын
Online-only games can actually make less money with more players. When a game finds a way to get rid of the players who spend no money on the game they achieve two things: 1) save money on server costs, 2) new players are now far more likely to encounter & chat with people who spend money on the game than they are with people who play it for free (or nothing after retail price) - so the idea of spending money in the game becomes more acceptable.
@weregretohio77285 жыл бұрын
Yep, they're making more money than ever. They don't care about or need us - they have the people who will pay and the younger generations that will accept this as normal.

"Cutting the cord" for cable TV became more and more common as people started to see an disparity in what they were paying for vs. what they were getting. I don't know if it's lack of foresight or sheer avarice (perhaps a bit of both) that is causing this same thing to happen all over again, but what I do know is the harder these chuckleheads make it to get what I want the less likely I am going to pay for it. And the last I checked, the piracy market is still very alive and well.
