Many corporate chains legally don't let people go on their vacations (this particularly affects retail and fast food workers). They are either 1) not approved for the consecutive days off, or 2) approved but then are guilt-tripped or someone calls out and it is suddenly their problem. This is an issue in US and Canada, I can't speak for other countries.
